How is Verizon going to handle the N1?

Waiting and waiting to dump my BB Storm.
My contract is up. Waiting....

How is Verizon going to handle the sales of this phone?
Is it going to be sold from their stores?
T-Mobile doesn't (as far as I know).

Are we going to be allowed to carry insurance?? That's always been one of the best reasons to go with Verizon.

Will the phone be subsidized on a contract?

pretty sure that what you're going to see is a duplicate of the tmobile model. they're not going to look to change what works.
you'll see the phone offered online only.
subsidized or off contract depending on what you want to go with.
if vzw decides to insure the phone, then you'll have that option. that obviously wont be up to google/htc

in the end all you can do is speculate endlessly and keep waiting...

No one really knows. Verizon has always been really protective of their network, so the N1 will be interesting. As a Storm owner, I'm sure you remember how long it took to get updates for it. And Droid users are now still waiting for their 2.1 update. I'd bet that in both cases it was caused by VZW's extensive device testing.

I'm just guessing, but I think the N1 will still only be sold online and will have a similar optional subsidy to the T-Mobile version. I imagine they will have one of the new HTC Sense phones that are similar to the N1 in stores. As for insurance, I bet they'll offer it. It's just Assurion I believe. Same as T-Mobile.

in the case of the storm, it has to do with the slow dev process that rim does. nothing to do with vzw. it took them two years to put out a new OS for their BBs, and in the end less devices were supported than originally forcasted, and the entire process took almost two years. BB owners are still awaiting their full native browser promised to them at the same time, and the native twitter app promised early 09. can all that be attributed to vzw? come on. don't be naive.

as for the droids 2.1? at a recent press conference the head of motorola said that they would BEGIN work on 2.1 "sometime soon". not exactly the exact timetable we've been hearing from various unnamed sources all over engadget and slashdot... is this the evil work of big red as well?

draw your own conclusions... i already have... RIM sucks at development and slashdot/engadget don't have the greatest of sources... or at least dont check them.

I agree with you. VZW is getting the legend which is essentially the same phone with sense on top of it. They will probably advertise that one and push it in store. The N1 will probably follow the exact same sales model as the N1 that works on T-Mobile. This is the main reason I'm getting an N1 instead of something with sense. I hate waiting so long for software fixes and google seems to leave more exploits in the base android OS to allow rooting. VZW will finally be what all carriers should be... just a dumb pipe.

I've played with all of the leaks and "official" updates and I have have come to the conclusion that Verizon (or is it RIM) needs to do more research before they release something as official. RIM just needs to get their overall act together.

The latest "official" release for the Storm 1 (328) was a mess, riddled with bugs and overlooked issues.
I have been a long time BB user and this last "upgrade" was a slap in the face.
It is the reason that I can't wait for the N1.

Hope the Android experience is a better one.

lol you ever get that bug where when you switch it from portrait to landscape, it only fills up 2/3 of the screen? That's only one of tons of reasons I'm switching to the N1.

I really hope Verizon lets us use family plan upgrades for the N1...

Actually true. The Nexus is probably the easiest Android phone to root, to date, what with the bootloader being incredibly easy to unlock. I understand that some variants of the Hero are still not rooted, and Paul (ala Modaco) said that the HTC Desire--the N1 with Sense and a bit more RAM--may be difficult to root and/or will take a while to root. For that reason, I expect the N1 will continue to enjoy a much bigger share of developers and custom ROMs.

However, I keep hearing stories of store employees in different places claiming it will be sold and supported in-store. Already posted this in the Incredible forum (dont ask) but I was recently in a VZW store yesterday and had a conversation with someone there about the N1. I specifically asked him how I could get my hands on an N1 when it was released and he told me I could "come in and get one." Meaning the store. Some other people confirmed hearing similar things from other VZW stores and, interestingly, also an AT&T store. So, Google may be changing their distribution model and enlist the help of big carriers to do the dirty work.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that Verizon will carry and support it in their stores.
It is how they roll with customer support. This is a good and bad thing.

I'd be very surprised if I had to buy it through Google only.
