This is excellent, and will strengthen the Android OS that much more. Devs will be more likely to make apps for Android now because they won't have to develop multiple versions for multiple OSes.

And all those stupid articles about how Android is about to die because there are a billion phones out there that are on different OS versions? Meaningless now!

I was under impression that the G1 didn't have enough ROM space to accommodate a 2.1 build. Didn't Rogers in Canada say as much? They even offered G1 owners free upgrades to HTC Magics because of it, I think.

Yea, not exactly "news" ... but even so, I'm all for it. Every Android device should have the same firmware, if at all possible.

"I talked to someone who said it's coming soon".

Then another website "reports" the same thing, but only cites the first website.

After about 20 websites "report" the same story, each quoting back one layer, critical mass is reached and its's finally "news".

i think its legit, a friend of mine says he read under his account that g1 is getting it on the tmobile page. not sure how accurate he is, but it sounded pretty legit, and even the tmoible reps were telling us yesterday that it was pretty much for sure, they don't usually know much, but they all pretty much sounded like they got some kind of a memo that said as such

This will (if true, notice I said if) fix all the complaints about segmentation. But I sure hope "All android devices" doesn't include my rooted Droid its quite fine how it is now.

If we got 2.1 official update, we would most likely lose root access, as well as some apps functionality.

First smart thing Google has done in 2010. Of course, it just means that all the phones will get the 2.1 firmware, but will also get some neutered variant off the N1, much like the DROID will be getting. Don't expect live wallpapers (N1 feature), 3D app tray, etc. But do expect voice navigation and widgets.

Flash is different. That's an Adobe thing not a Google thing. Adobe is putting system requirements on the package. I don't know how they'll regulate that if everyone is on 2.1 firmware. But they've said at least 500MHz ARM-A8.

As much as I love my droid, Motorola can kiss my ass concerning any further product purchases, because every device is only as good as the support behind it.

The phone has been out 4 months and we have already had the 2.0.1 update, most phones are lucky to get 1 update a year if they even get that.

+1 agree. Yeah, we're really "suffering" with 2.0.1. So, Motorola within the 6-8 months, we would have received 2 major updates to the OS, whereas other devices have had how many in HOW MANY years? I think I'm okay with Motorola's decision on this. Obviously, they are not just optimizing 2.1 for us, but delivering to us whatever other tweaks since it's clear that the DROID is no longer under the "Google Phone" mantra.
