Help Help Root To Hero

I am a noob to android. If someone could please make a tutoriol or video or both on how to root my stock 1.5fw g1 to the best hero build. I am able to use the adb and would like to make nandroid backups to restore my phone if something goes wrong. i have no sd card reader but i do have another g1 i can use (brothers) and other phones that read sd cards. Am runiing on xp too.

My phone is currently at (this is the bootloader screen):

DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.19.26I

I would like a build that is compatable with my g1 phone board. Please video would be mighty helpful. And if you dont know what your doing then dont try to guess on my second g1 now. :) Thanks in Advance

EDIT: Also found this online idk if it helps, http://leakdroid.com/page.php?4

Well your radio and board are good for installing the hard/new SPL which is needed for the hero builds... I would go with JACHERO2.2.1 if your looking for a decent version..... as for rooting the process is still the same just after working your way back to cupcake you need to install the hard spl just make sure your radio is still up to date before doing it

Yes, i'd be more than happy to walk you through the steps... however there is never a 100% safety guarantee that your phone wont brick when you flash any build so keep that in mind.... the big issue is going to be the hard/new spl as you need to flash your build or fastboot your stuff back onto the phone right after the spl is installed... Best place to catch me would be over at #androidforums on irc

I would also like this information, I will send you my info

I would really appreciate instructions, or even just a point in the right direction as far as noob g1 rooting goes as well as installing new roms.

Thanks!!!

You can follow the guide in my signature for rooting ... just follow it exactly read through it a couple of time ... make sure you download the correct files .... and follow things in order given .... you can mess up your phone if you are careless ...

Or use the file or procedure for the wrong style of phone ...

YOU have a G1 Dream Correct ?

Yes, I do.

This is my second one (my first was stolen out of car). I actually had the first one rooted (pre-RC33) but when i got a new one with RC33 on it I couldn't get it rooted again.

Plus, I want to try out all these different ROMs everyone has been talking about. I got the G1 because of its open source spirit and I thought that meant that there would be more tools for people like me to customize. Unfortunately that requires a little more expertise than I anticipated.

Just follow the guide carefully ... and you should be ok ... use Dev's JF 1.5 as your first build before moving onto other builds ...

Ok, so this didn't seem to work, I am not sure what I am doing wrong. But I am not going to take this further as I don't want to brick my phone.

As of right now...I am stuck with Andriod 1.0. How can I get 1.5 back and just continue on with a stock phone?

Thanks for all of your help!

So you got RC29 and RC30 flashed ?

I you have a stable phone then you will use the basic same procedure with different files ....

USE the UNROOT guide in my signature

yes but like the Cyanogen build requires a bootloader and flashboot change

I would not even try a HERO unless you have GUTS and money for another Phone

Yeeeaah. That Hero build looks nice. And no, I have neither the guts or the money to see this through...looks like I am back to ole ota cupcake.

I wish there was a tool for newbies to do this sort of stuff and have it be easy, like a download workflow that will do all of this stuff automatically.

I sort of figured that was what having an open source os would provide.

Thanks again for everything, and being patient.

To clarify... Cyanogen and JF builds just require root, however there are more than a few builds like the Hero builds that require a modified SPL and this has been known to brick phones so.... However builds like Cyanogen's and TheDude's are modded and have added significant UI upgrades and will continue to do so... you might want to try those before jumping into a Hero build especially since alot of the Hero builds are still not 100% functional......

Not to sound like an idiot, but I am still unclear if I actually achieved in rooting my phone after this whole thing. Is there an easy way to find out if I actually did?

Also, you are saying that I can download a Cyanogen build of Cupcake and install it the same way I did the OTA one with just root and not have to mess with anything else?

Thanks

Several different questions .... Once rooted you can load almost any Build that has been created ....

Here is a website with video instructions on everthing you need to know.
The Unlockr Android How To’s
Just be sure that you get root, install new radio and spl, and then hero IN THAT ORDER.
The latest jachero rom ( 2.6.3 )requires you to set up your sd card in different way than what is in the video, so once you update your radio and spl you should set up sd card and install hero with the instructions in the first post here:
[ROM] JACHero 2.63 - Fully Optimized HTCHero 7/11/09 4:00PM - xda-developers

I've been a member of xda for years and I will tell you that they are not that friendly to answering newbie questions, because they alerady have many times. Be sure not to ask anything about bluetooth.(it doesn't work yet)
I know this all seems pretty complicated in the beginning but it is doable if your patient and careful. I have the latest build and I will not be going back. The ui and widgets are tremendously nicer than the original.
