I'm a newb, a little help? :)

Okay so I got my G1 on 7/3/09. I love it so far, but I am a tad bit confused about this 1.5 upgrade cupcake thing. I was told mine would be up to date when it was activated, I don't think it is.. I don't because there is no virtual keyboard and it says I have firmware version 1.1 soooooo how long will it take to get the upgrade? and what exactly will it change?

Thank you soooo much!

It should do it automatically and there really is no "exact time" for it but if the phone has been active for a week or so it should have happened by now.... there are other options to upgrade... if you download this: http://www.getyourdroidon.com/root/signed-kila-ota-148830.de6a94ca.zip to your sd card of your phone, then rename it update.zip... Power off the phone, than power it back on holding home+end call buttons... This will bring you to the recovery screen... hit alt+s and let the update run its course.... when it completes hit home+back buttons and let it boot.... then you'll have 1.5 AKA cupcake...

You got it 7/3? Then give it a couple weeks to update on it's own. When they released cupcake they said that new phones would be updated like a week or two after the phone is activated.

When they release updates, they go to active handsets first. It's not like someone runs around the warehouses and stockrooms all over the country, opening boxes, turning on phones, signing into them, and updating them. That would take a long time, so instead they wait for people to buy the phones and then it updates on it's own.

My guess is that phones made from this point forward will have cupcake pre-loaded, but the phones being sold right now are probably from stock that was made before or at the time of the release of cupcake.

Brit-
plug your G1 to your desktop or laptop thru USB and mount it by pulling down the notification curtain when the USB logo is in the top left corner of ur G1 display.
then "Select to copy files to/from your computer." touch "Mount"
i got my G1 on 06/30 and had the update that night, it automatically prompted me to update after i mounted.
im using an iMac but i think itd be the same on windows, as long as your internet is connected.

that's a coincidence, mounting doesn't prompt the update.
