I rooted last night and i went with the smoked glass rom. wow this thing is sweet! now a couple questions. when i push the home button the menu always comes up that asks how i want to complete the action and the choices are either "home" or "launcher". which one is better to set as default? and why are there 2 chioces now? whats the differance?
Next question seems like ive seen somwhere before but i cant find it so, do i have to make sure im unrooted and back to stock before the update to 2.1 comes out at the end of the month or whenever? what happens if im not? thanks for any help!!
Last how do i delete the apps i dont use that came with the phone like facebook and amazon etc.?

Everyone is going to tell you to check the root folder at the top of of the page, and you should. I'm guessing this thread will be moved there anyway.
Your questions, I would use the Home since the Launcher I think is the 2.1 and makes the phone lag. Just check home and keep it like that.
Next, your phone won't receive and OTA update b/c the rom will block it, you'll have to go back to stock to get it. The apps should have been deleted when you went through the rooting menu; there is a checklist of things you can take off.
Again, thoroughly look at all the info about rooting b.c these questions are addressed there.;)

Home i believe is the Standard looking App drawer of 2.0.1 . Launcher I believe is the newer 3d version for 2.1

Well as of right now I think the Smoked Glass ROM turned updates off, so you would have to reinstall your stock ROM for the the 2.1 VZW update. I don't think you have to unroot your phone though.

I don't have an answer for your last question though

First question: When you installed the ROM you told it to install both the stock 2.0.1 launcher and the 2.1 Launcher. Now when you hit the home softkey, it (the phone) has two options for that action. I prefer the old launcher, some folks like the 2.1 version. You should play with it a while and see which one you like best. There is a checkbox on the pop-up that will allow you to choose your choice as default and you won't get the pop-up again. You can always change your choice through the settings>applications>manage applications menu.

Second Question: If I understand correctly, if you are rooted you will not get the update, but after it rolls out, if you want it, you can unroot back to stock and force the update through settings>about phone>check for updates. I may be wrong here, but that is how I understand it. I have also heard (over and over and over again) that there is distinct possibility that if you unroot and allow the update, you may not be able to get root back later (or at least until someone finds a new root solution.)

Third Question: When you applied the update to smoked glass, you may have been presented with several menus during the update process that you have to use the volume up and down keys and the camera key to choose options with. If you didn't remove the particular apps during update, you will need to run the update again and choose to not include them during the update process. I flashed the Smoked Glass 4.5 ROM when it first came out and had some FC's so I went back to DroidMod 1.0. I can't remember how it installed, but I seem to remember several sets of options that you could choose to customize the install. I have had better luck with DroidMod 1.0 than with any that I have tried.

I can't promise the accuracy of any of these answers, but I think they are correct.

Good Luck,
BigRedGonzo

Home is the stock homescreen app. Only 3 homescreens, but snappy.
Launcher is the updated 2.1 homesceen app. 5 screens, but less snappy.

You always must read what the dev of the ROM says about OTA updates. Some ROMs have them disabled, others leave that go.

The best way to "delete" system apps is to rename them (don't actually delete them). In the /system/app folder, you'll find the apps you want to disable. Just add .bak to the end of their name and they will become disabled. You can use the app Root Explorer to do this.

Final thought ... no offense ...

can anyone answer any of these questions?

A little patience please? Yikes. You first posted at 6 in the morning. Just how many people do think is logged in at that hour? Just sayin...

messanger13;
i just had seen 50 some people had looked at it and no replies i just wanted to get some kind of answer because i was unsure if everyone was avoiding it because they knew this EXACT question had been answered or somthing. I know how everyone gets on here with repeat questions still. but i hadnt found the answers thats why i made a post. "just askin". Too many people pride themselves on being able to say: "thats been answered". Its like they feel the need to show their knowlage through saying that. I notice some people are apologizing every post before they ask their questions. that shouldnt be necessary. and i will not do that. If i cant find an answer to my question i post it what else can i do?

Thanks for all the answers all are appreciated from everyone!

From what I understand, the SmokedGlass ROM does NOT turn off updates, but if you are running SPRecovery (should be on 99.2b or 99.3b to install SG5.0.1), OTA updates are blocked.

To clarify, SPRecovery blocks updates from being automatically applied by default. I think this may be an option that you can toggle, so you may want to check. They will still download to the phone, but will not apply with SPRecovery (0.99.2b+) installed. Many ROMs do not block OTA updates.

So if the OTa updates are downloaded you could apply them if you really wanted to?

I'm surprised a mod hasn't moved this thread yet, but I'll answer the question to the best of my knowledge.

If you are rooted and running a custom ROM and only blocking the auto update with SPRecover (not renaming any files, or running a ROM that actively blocks it), the phone should download the update and in theory you could apply it. HOWEVER, this is not at all recommended! The official 2.1 update is designed to go over the top of a non-rooted, stock recovery, 2.0.1 (or 2.0?) phone. If you have made lower level changes, something could get fouled up badly and you may have to go through a lot of hassle to recover the phone.

The general consensus is that if you are rooted and/or running a custom ROM, go back to 2.0.1 and unroot before applying 2.1 to be safe.

If we unroot before the update and then want to reroot after the update will we be able to, or are we going to loose the ability to root with the new update?

From what I understand, they could do something that makes it difficult or not possible to root after applying the official 2.1 update. I don't see why they'd do this since everything has been wide open so far, but perhaps they are seeing more abuses or dealing with more bricked phones or confused customers who root and bite of more than they can chew.

That being said, if you check out the sticky thread at the top of this forum called "now you can live without fear of bricking," I believe that restoring via that method (using the 2.0.1 ROM) should be possible no matter what 2.1 does -- check it out for yourself though.

Since SPRecovery no longer avail and I believe it is Droidmod now? Does that block the OTA? Thanks.
