when a rezound is unlocked, you are able to flash unsigned images for recovery,boot,and system. the hboot and radio are still security-on,unlike a true "s-off" or security off device.

What is ADB?* I was able to do all of my DX Rooting with a one click rooter.* Where do I get ADB?
adb=Android Debug Bridge. its a way to communicate with your phone via your PC,and is a neccessary part of rooting and roming a rezound,due to the fact that is s-on,despite being unlocked. htcdev has directions on where to download the neccessary utilitys,or you can use this:mini-adb.zip

I only want to do two things.* Freeze or even better remove bloatware (is this possible) and get wireless tether (is this possible).* both these are possible I also want to be able to return it under warranty if necessary (Relock and run the RUU?) unlocking your bootloader does void "all or parts of your warranty". sorry there is no way around that. once you unlock,your bootloader will read unlocked until you relock it,at wich time it will read relocked. never again will your hboot read simply locked as it does currently. so anyone that wants to check,can easily findout that you unlocked your devices,then attempted to relock it and make it appear stock again. if your not OK with this risk,id pretty strongly advise that you stay stock and wait for some other sort of exploit or procedure. and upgrade to ICS when that releases. if you root,you can run ICS now or you can remain stock rooted and wait for an official release. as long as you do NOT install a custom recovery permanently on your phone, you can take OTAs as they happen(youll just have to reroot after),you do not need to relock in order to accept OTAs. just keep the stock recovery. it is possible to relock and run a RUU and go back to 100% stock if you desire.

So, can you answer the above questions?* gave it my best shot Also, maybe just give me an HTC root for beginner’s tutorial?* The how to root above seems great, but some of the HTC specific terminology escapes me.* im actually about to start working on my own guide.

Next, everything says make a back up.* How can I make a full backup without root?* Or do I just lose everything when I unlock, then after I get it all set-up again I make a backup.* correct. unlocking wipes your phone,you will have to re-set up. there is no way to temp root at this time to use root-only backup apps.

Next, I want to make sure I won't have any problems with upcoming OTA's . Will I need to unroot, relock boot loader, then do ota, then re root? Or is HTC more friendly than that? Obviously I will want ICS when it releases so I want to make sure I'm not hurting myself there. i described this above. all you need do do is temporarily flash a custom recovery to flash root files. keep your stock recovery on the phone.

Finally, I want to ensure this is “safe”.* What is the safest method I can go about doing this to ensure I don’t brick my phone? with the s-on hboot protecting itself and the radio,rest assured it is next to impossible to brick a rezound. you should always be able to run a stock RUU and get your phone working again.

at this point,id suggest spending some time reading thru the forums,as most "new to rezound" posts have very similar questions. as i said,im working on a more noob friendly guide,youre welcome to wait for that,or dive right in if you can read up enuff to have confidence in what youre doing.

I seem to be reading mixed reviews about WiFi Tether around the forums. I will use this mainly when I travel (for work) and primarily with an iPad (I know, I am on both, but I got the iPad before android tablets had caught up).

That is 90% of the reason I want to root, and probably won't do it for a while if it won't gain me anything. Do you know can I do the wireless tether, either Barnacle, Android Wifi tether or some other app, with stock root and have it work?

Also, is there a wifi tether app that actually blocks or hides the traffic from big red? On my droid x you had to freeze a file. Just curious how that works here.

Basically I will use it probably 2-4 hours a month, but occasionally I might have a high month. Is this such a minuscule amount that Verizon won't even notice or care?

there is no way to hide the fact that youre tethering,that i know of. just do not abuse it,and you should be fine. the useage youre describing defiantely does not sound excessive- very likely they will not notice or care(i have friends that tether a couple hours a day ). just realize that they are able to tell youre doing it if they want to.

As staff this is the policy we go by:

"The official policy is that AF considers tethering against the carrier's TOS improper conduct (although not illegal) and while we permit the discussion of tethering and links to apps and instructions how to do it, the staff will not provide that information or participate in the discussion in a way that facilitates the practice."

I know people as well who use it.

Ok, following Scottys directions, I got it to a point where ai was able to unlock, and load the temp recovery. I backed the phone up. rebooted. (I assume when you reboot it averts back to the stock recovery)

The part im confused about is the superuser part. After I rebooted post backup, I downloaded and installed superSU from the market and when i try to run the app it says:

"Thers is no SU binary installed and superSU cant ijnstall it. This is a problem"

What am I missing? My phone is still unlocked because i can disable the verizon apps.

NEVERMIND!!! I was not clear on the whole binary files dur to the XDA websites suggestion that superSU will handle the binarys. When I reread Scottys post and looked at the recovery rom again, I realized what scotty was asking me to do. Install the zip file download from within the recovery ROM. Duh. ;-)

Anyway, Thanks Scotty, you rock man. This whole site rocks. You guided me from a bloated Verizon Stock with all sorts of crap software to a lean mean Android machine. Thanks again brother.
