So I switched from Nexus to Razr Maxx...

So I was one of those that just jumped ship, maybe not many, but I did. I loved my Nexus, so I am not hating. The problem I had was I used my phone alot and carried 2 spare batteries (total of 3) and generally sucked through both of them. I live in a 4g area and found myself battery managing all day. It was sickining. I got the Maxx yesterday and tested it out on a full charge today, I just hit the 10 hour mark with no charge and still at 41% and I used it heavy today. No battery management, nothing. I do have a custom rom on it, but thats it.

Strangly enough, ive had zero call drops, zero calls that the other person couldnt hear me and no connection issues. Yes its day one, but when I say I use it a lot, thats an understatement. I went through three Nexus before I gave up and just kept it with the issues I had. You may not have these issues, and I am so happy for you.

Basically, I just want to give my unbiased opinion and then ill move my butt over to the Razr Thread. The nexus has a beautiful screen, fast response, and all around form factor. The problem with me was, I am a heavy user and I needed a phone that could keep up with me without me having to worry about whats running and can I use 4g or not.

Maybe this helps someone, maybe not, Just thought I would share my expeirence, Good luck to all you Nexus Users!

Gnex is phone for advanced users who like "having worries", but they are not worries, they are pleasure.
I had iPhone before and iPhone is device for users who dont like to tweak their device. Just use and like it the way it is and thats it... Then I switched to Nexus who had tons of tweakability and Im loving it. When you tweak it right its superb phone.
I dont know was it faulty device, but my device is fast, always connected...no problems yet.
And you have to know that GNex with ICS is still young device which is upgrading, patience will be rewarded... ;)

I disagree with this statement. It's a smartphone. A smartphone that should work out of the box without necessary tweaks, ROMs, etc.
Any customizations done should be to make the user experience better, but not needed to fix a device that should already work well when it was purchased.

That's pretty interesting. The combined capacity of 2-3 batteries is above that of the Maxx, but you got by on lesser capacity, while only using 60% over the same period?

I, personally, wouldn't like the idea of carrying around spare batteries, either. I'd love something like a sealed Galaxy Nexus "Maxx", but such a device isn't in the cards. Either way, I'm glad it worked out for you. :)

It does work out of the box without any tweaks. I ran mine stock with no problems for around a month when I got it. Then I decided that I wanted more customization options so I put in a custom ROM, theme and kernal. Still no problems after around 2 months.

I think the "worries" that nenadkc refers to are the ones that come with modding the phone. These worries come when modding absoultley anything you can think of from clothes to cars to electronics.

" I do have a custom rom on it, but thats it.".

My first question for you is did you use a custom rom a the GNex? If you did not than you can't tell me all about how great the maxx is. I have heard that there are lot of custom roms that will better the battery life on the GNex. I have the GSM so I don't have to worry about that crap.

Of course, roms, Kernels, you name it, I did it. I modded it several times, got the best battery life with gummy tweaked, thus using it on my Razr.

I so disagree with the Advance user statement, i'm a pretty advanced user, however, having the battery life trumps what the Nexus offers me at the moment. What's the point off having the most "advanced" if you can't use it though the day without worry of battery. Just saying my issue may not be yours, but others. Other than that, I loved the phone.

You are right if you phone want last a day then why have. Like I said on this forum before Verizon just really messed up the nexus. The battery is not best battery ever from the start, but add lte and you really cut the battery life down. I know people want the speed but at what cost. I think the GSM one is brilliant and works much better.

I am not sure if you were talking to me or what because you quoted me, but I never said anything about advance user.

Oh yeah, the first part was a reply to you asking if I had a Custom Rom on my Gnex. The advance user part was for someone else. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm glad to see this thread, I'm having the same debate myself. My loyalty credit comes up later this week and I'm debating between the Nexus and the Maxx. I've been on a Droid X since the day it was released, I've done every mod possible with it and I love it... but 4g would be great.

My big concern is battery life. I'd be pissed if a phone in my hands couldn't go an entire day on a charge. I want call quality. I want solid data signal. I don't necessarily care about being able to run the latest and greatest ROM's, I just want some customization.

I have 3 days to decide so I better make up my mind.

If you don't care about the newest thing Google has to offer in the OS department then the Maxx would be the way to go. LTE on Verizon just sucks the battery right out. If you had any other carrier I would suggest the GNex.

If you don't need the best synergy of hardware and software, then the Gnex is a waste.

I own a Gnex and actually convinced my Fiance to purchase a Maxx because I think for the majority of people it's the better choice. Having used both on a daily basis, I still personally prefer my Nexus. But I can see how the Maxx would be better for other people.

After playing with the Maxx for a bit, I'd recommend it over the GNex, for your wants/needs. The GNex has a number of strong points, but I don't think they're enough that they blow the Maxx away, especially since ICS will eventually arrive on the latter device. As to call quality, I have no issues, but data signal can get squirrely at times (though I've had this issue on a number of other devices (Droid, Bionic, and Charge).

For the things that you can't change, such as hardware, the Maxx seems like the better fit for you. I'd go check both out, in person.

I have only had a few (thankfully) problems with my GNEX since I got it. The reboot by itself has happened 3 times in 3 months, so I say not bad. Sometimes the call quality isn't great, I came from a Droid X and it had excellent call quality.

So far on battery life, I'm great. But I'm near an outlet 95% of the day, so hardly never in need of a charge.

As for the MAXX, I love Motorola's build quality, but I cannot see myself without a phone where I can't access the battery. I even steered my niece to the Rezound because of this (and the $99 pricetag). And I have 0 experience with HTC!

But I do luv my ICS!! ;)

I had my GN side by side with a razr at work last night, I had 4g while the razr had no 3g or 4g...
If it's anything I've learned about the GN, it's that a number of experiences are inconsistent, ranging from the camera to data connectivity. And I'm not speaking of just the anecdotes we're using on the boards, but personal experiences with friends devices, taking photos of the same object, or looking for reception in the same house.

The GN is an incredible phone, which based on my experiences, I'd recommend to anyone; however, I also think the Maxx is a great phone, which better fits certain people, who have a different set of criteria.

I couldn't sit here and praise Android, if I couldn't also highlight why choice is a good thing, when it comes to the platform. Based on this, I think the Maxx would better suit him, but it's entirely his decision.

From my understanding the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is the same mobile as the Motorola Droid Razr but the Maxx offers a giant battery with a 3300 mah and a slightly thicker form factor as it has the bigger battery. If this is so then why not purchase a higher capacity battery i.e 3800 mah with back cover for the galaxy nexus from eBay thus the mobile should last as long as the Maxx.

Well, since I've had my Maxx, I can tell you its better on battery life period. Had the nexus since release day, so I've had plenty of time with it to compare. ICS was the strong point for me for that phone, the screen, Meh, not that big a deal. The 3800mah battery is ugly and thick on the phone, but I still don't think I would have got a full day out of it when I was going through two and a half. Its a personal preference really.

Today was a real test, up at 7am and in a spot were 4g was in and out, so it was always searching (in a hospital). Still holding up like a champ.

I was never a fan of not being able to replace my battery, but the Maxx had changed that view for me as of now.

Also, for those that haven't used ICS, the decision isn't a hard, I am missing it however. I would flash the ICS ROM, but the front camera isn't working on any of them, and I need it to Skype my daughter at night.

I made my decision, I'll be giving the Nexus a try with the 2100mah battery. I'm not a "power user" by any means so I think I should be able to make it a day on a charge with the extended battery. ICS looks and feels so good and the unlocked bootloader make the Nexus a no brainer for potential modding. If I'm going to stick with an Android phone I may as well go all the way in. I just hope that the Samsung hardware will meet my expectations, as I still want good reception and signal strength. The screen is amazing and the camera is on par with the Razr so I'm not worried about that.

As much as I like the Motorola hardware (my Droid X looks new 20 months later) the locked down software bothers me (especially all the crap bloatware...).

Thursday needs to get here so I can get my new phone!

Thanks for the help everyone.

Because the GNex would be double the size...that's what's amazing about the Maxx, relatively small size for that much power.

To the OP, thanks for your honest opinion. I love my Nexus, but I haven't loved some of the already mentioned issues. But, I deal with them because the good outweighs the bad. If we're all completely honest, most users would probably choose a Maxx over GNex if they both had ICS.

IF this were true, I would still personally choose the Gnex for 3 hardware reasons:

1) 720p 4.65" Amoled Screen -- Side by side it doesn't compare.

2) NFC -- Google Wallet (unofficially) is amazing. I see paying by NFC/phone becoming huge soon. The RAZR has NO NFC. Before you knock it, you need to try it. This IS the future.

3) User Removable Battery -- Big battery or not, I don't like having to send in a device or void my warranty in order to change a battery.

Obviously, equal ICS support does not exist in this "perfect world." How long will it be before MAXX users really get ICS? 6 months after Gnex? 1 year? What bout when Jelly Bean comes out? They will need to wait again...1 year? Never?
