*{Official}* ICS (ice cream sandwich) discussion thread

In preparation for this can anyone tell me how I find out if my phone is branded or not as this naturally will effect if I do actually get ics in march or not. I have nothing on the phone that suggests it is...no splash screen,no network branded apps etc, but I did get the phone from tmobile which makes me assume it probably is....it would be great to find out for sure.

Check your software version Menu>Settings>About Phone>Software Info I think that if you have 401 in the middle of the Software Number your unbranded.

Well if this is the case I'm unbranded. Strange as I upgraded direct with tmobile and I assumed they would have branded it...I'm not complaining mind. I had to wait time for froyo on my old desire. Ics bring it on.

As we speak I am installing the official Android 4.0 update on my XE. Can't wait to try it out! But check your phones, it might be ready for you too.

I'm on an unbranded XE in Denmark.:D

Edit: Now running Android version 4.0.3, software number 3.32.401.105, Sense version 3.6

Update: I haven't had time to play around with it too much, but I have noticed that it is remarkably faster when scrolling and using programs. Plus Google Chrome can be installed (no experience with that yet). The classic Sense icons for phone/apps at the bottom of the home screen have changed - see screenshot. Settings menu has also changed.

Other than that, I haven't gotten any further in finding out what is new.

The data usage function in "Settings" is very, very cool.

I got it the other day also, phone is quicker and now you can edit how many home screens you want to have :D 7 is to many for me, so I am using my usual 3 :D:D no longer stuck with the crippled Sense menu bar it is gone in favor for the more Samsung style. All in all seems to be a bit of a leap forward imo, although I have restarted my phone about 4 times now and eveytime it updates some services 33, 33 again then 30 now 28 :roll eyes: never mind though, it is a better unit due to this update. I was close to changing mine for an iPhone 4S, but I think I shall keep it for a month or so and see how it goes.

Haddock? What "Power control" widget is that? Cheers.

My power control widget is SwitchPro Widget, an awesome little widget, with tons of customization options. The only thing that bothers me with it (now) is that the GPS button doesn't seem to work with ICS. I think this may be the phone's fault though, because unless I have selected "Use GPS Location" in the Locations bar in Settings, I can't use my GPS(and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case before?).
I'm not to thrilled about that, since I don't want all apps to use GPS whenever they feel like it. If I haven't selected that option, my Tasker profile, which turns GPS on/off with specific apps, doesn't work either. So I don't quite know how to get around that, or even if it will prove to be a big battery drainer.

Still liking ICS though! Fast and good looking. But it does seem that GOSms Pro can't retrieve contact photos anymore, but I'll grab the dev and see if he can fix that. I really like the fact that you can delete unused panes on your homescreen too, since 7 is a bit over the top for what I need.
The Quick Settings option on the drag down bar is a nice touch too, but it would be even nicer if you could edit that, to put in you own options. Specifically GPS toggle, but it seems that that is gone completely???

I'm looking forward to hearing what other people find out about what's new, since I haven't had too much time to figure out what's up.

EDIT: I have just re-started my phone three times to see if it stopped saying "Android is Upgrading - updating application x of xx", and it doesn't... It's the same number of apps that it "updates" each time, so this looks like another flaw... Grrr...

has anyone heard about or seen a roll-out schedule for the XE? I got mine in Australia from MobiCity whose supplier is from HK - Unbranded

I checked today and nothing yet.

How about if those of you who are getting ICS tell us where you're from and what network (only if you think that is helpful).

cheers

but... I also pre-ordered the ONE X from the UK - since I'm outside the UK I get it VAT free...saves about A$150.

I find myself checking every bloody morning when I know its pointless..
People are expecting it at the end of this month but as we have seen in the post above the upgrade is not perfect. I imagine this if anything will add a few more days/weeks to the UK's OTA update as HTC will almost definitely be fixing the current Sense 3.6/ICS problem before it ships to the UK....

This is all conjecture btw but considering the smaller countries (Denmark's population-6million compared to UK population-60million) always get the updates first seem to suggest that they are in essence creating a controlled test enviroment before rolling... I'm just venting more than anything heh

HURRY THE FECK UP HTC!

Wiil you not be charged import duty when the phone hits customs. I know this is the case in the UK when buying from say the USA.

Regarding the GPS toggle (or lack of same) that I mentioned above - I have contacted HTC about this, since I am quite frustrated about it.

They have escalated it, which I hope means that they will try to do something about it..!

Still liking ICS, despite small compatability issues with other apps, which hopefully will get fixed soon. I am incredibly happy that the old launch bar at the bottom with apps, phone and customization is gone. Didn't know how much I hated that until now. I also had an issue with my phone book before the update, where it would "forget" linked contact photos - this is fixed.

I use Widget Locker to alter my lock screen, and after the update I have to swipe twice to unlock, which is a nuisance. It's as if the first swipe is ignored completely. So I have disabled that and written to the dev.

Still haven't figured out how to create folders? All other ICS articles say that you can drag an app onto another to create a folder, but not on my XE.

And it's still fast!

If it's true what you guys above are suggesting about Denmark being a proving ground, I certainly don't mind being a guinea pig:D
