Applications - before and after rooting.

Alrighty. I've been lurking the rooting scene and other places for quite a while, but have only just joined up in these forums. (I'm no forum nooby ;) been on and been active on dozens of forums)
I have to admit, this most likely has been answered before, but I have been extremely busy lately due to school.

The question: I have refrained from rooting my Hero (I am a linux user in case any one wanted to know ;)) due to time constraints, I have yet to root it. I will probably attempt this weekend.
I bought the hero Oct. 11th, the day it came out iirc, and I have built up quite a hefty sum of applications.
After the rooting process, I plan use the gumbo kernel, and fresh1.1. One of the reasons that have held me from rooting is what happens to those apps? I will flash Fresh1.1, so they will be deleted. Is there a way to extract all the applications from the nandroid backup I will make before flashing Fresh 1.1, and put them on the SD card and install them? I would love very much not to have to go and individually download each application from the market again.

Although my post count is low, I plan to stick with the forums :)
For the future, thanks!

flashing a rom doesn't uninstall any apps.. not unless you do a wipe first..going from stock to Fresh doesn't require a wipe so you're good to go..good luck with the root (if ya have 20 minutes to spare before the weekend go for it).. and welcome to the forums!

Thank you! I guess I completely miss interpreted.
I thought flashing fresh would completely wipe it :p
This frees up a lot of my worries :)

Ok, I rooted once and had to do a RUU because I have to have MMS.

Let me make sure I have this right...

If I want to root and use Fresh 1.1, I'm going to use pre-kitchen and do a nandroid back up once it gets to the screen after holding the Home button? I want to create a nandroid back up because if my MMS doesn't work again, I can flash my backup and it basically resets the phone without wiping it all?

MMS should still work just fine with Fresh 1.1, it always did with me. It's the 2.x ROM's that don't have MMS right now (although that might have just been fixed).

But what you're saying will work. If you root with pre-kitchen and go into the recovery console (black screen, green text), then you can make a nandroid of what you're at now. So make the backup BEFORE flashing Fresh, and you'll have a backup of your stock ROM

Ok. So make a backup then after that works, reboot and hold home then select fresh1.1 from zip and flash that? And if I want to add Gumbo, reboot, hold home, select gumbo from zip and im good?

I'm not sure what happened last time but a week after I had fresh and gumbo, MMS stopped working and I never made a back up. I'm going to stick with the stock messenger app rather than handcent.

correct.

For problems with MMS, make sure WiFi is off before trying to download them. For whatever reason, WiFi has been known to mess up MMS.

I also have the best luck in going to the stock app to download MMS...not because it doesn't work in Handcent (I'm pretty sure it works just fine), but because for whatever reason that's what I do lol

Ok, great. Thanks for the help. I guess I'll try rooting once again.

So from what you know, there is nothing with Fresh or Gumbo or even installing the file that makes the bar on the bottom look like stock that should be messing up MMS? I'm guessing it was some app I downloaded that messed it up where every MMS was behind a message or two.

right. nothing in the 1.5 ROM's should be messing with MMS.

MMS issues have been fairly common with the Hero and Sprint, no matter what ROM people have been running. It's apparently just one of those bugs that pops up every once in awhile. I don't get many pics, and I've been running 2.1 ROM's lately anyway, so I don't have any problems with not getting them :p

What's not working with 2.1? I thought I read somewhere the camera and a few other things.

camera, visual voicemail, and MMS. There's a fix for MMS, but I haven't tried it yet. Sounds like it works for some people though.

The 2.1 ROM's are fun to play with, but don't quite seem ready for everyday use. I haven't tried Gumbo 2.1....yet.

Is Gumbo 2.1 only for people with 2.1 roms or is it a recent upgrade from that last Gumbo (whatever number that was).

It's a whole new ROM, based of the recent leak of the Eris 2.1 ROM. Same thing as Flipz newest 2.1 ROM, but Gumbo is supposed to be quite a bit snappier. I'm downloading at the moment, and I'll probably try it out

My hard drive is gonna be FULL of ROM's before too long lol

I gotcha. Well let me know what you think of it. I have to have camera and MMS working, I use them all the time. Is there a link of where to get it? And does it say whether or not things are working or not?? Thanks man, big help!

if you need camera, then the 2.x ROM's aren't for you. They aren't likely to have a working camera until we get an official 2.1 release from Sprint/HTC.

The first page of each ROM on XDA tends to show what's working and what's not.
