Rooting 2.3.6

A month or so ago, the only way to root 2.3.6 was typing a command after restarting the phone & holding down the volume key. It wasn't really rooting per se, but it let one go into the file system.
Now I see there's a way to really root 2.3.6, but I can't remember how to "un-root" the particular method I used.
Does anyone remember?
Thanks.
