Yes my Husband dropped my d3 into our dog's water bowl and he did not tell me. He just plugged it right back into the charger. I not knowing went to use it a little bit later and was having some trouble. I tried to turn it on and off and got almost nothing. I then thought some times if I remove and replace the battery it would be fine. Well when I removed the cover and the back face plate there was my problem...WATER:(. I asked my husband about the water and he said yes he did. He did not think it would be a problem so he wiped it off and put it back on the counter. At that point we looked on line and saw the rice thing....only we had already done eveyrthing that you are not supposed to do. Well this was Sunday and it is now Tuesday and alas I have not had any success.

Because I only got this phone last summer I am not due for an upgrade from Verizom until March 2013. I just don't have an extra $500.00 for a new Droid 3 right now. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase an ulocked Droid 2 and put it on my to replace my Droid 3 until I would be allowed my 2 year upgrade? I have found a couple of the unlocked d2s on ebay and amazon. Thanks in advance for you advice.

Verizon phones are not "locked" like gsm phones. You can purchase ANY Verizon phone and use it on the network, even if it is an old hand me down. There is a couple things you want to be careful of:
If you currently have unlimited data, you will want to switch to another smartphone so you can keep the unlimited data.
And if you are going to buy the phone from somewhere like eBay or craigslist, you will want to be EXTREMELY careful. There are plenty of stolen phones and insurance scams going on. Even if the seller states it has a clean ESN/MEID (and you call Verizon to verify) doesn't mean the seller can't call Verizon the moment they ship it and report it stolen.

Thank you very much. I was looking at a new phone from Amazon. Kind of down grading from a d3 to a d2. Right now any d is better than nothing. This is the least expensive new Droid with the qwery keyboard I can find right now. Do you know if I will be able to activate the replacement droid on Verizon on line?

Yes, the My Verizon site on verizonwiresless.com, when you log in with your account, gives you the ability to activate a new phone on your line - it's on the account screen, under a section called "I want to", in a big box called "Activate or switch device" under the "Device" column. After doing that process, you can then call *228 option 1 to activate the phone on your account.

Or you can call customer service to do the same thing.

Of course the best chance that your phone would have had to survive a fall in water would have been for your husband to pull the battery and try the rice trick (or any other desiccant - material that absorbs liquid water and water vapor), based on my understanding of best practices. However, that said, it may be that it's just your battery that's fried at this point, and a new battery with a dried-out phone would be fine?

Thank you all for you assistance. We went an had our taxes done tonight and we are getting some $$ back. My husband told me to get another Droid 3. I just ordered it on Wirefly...it was a big $10.00 less than it was on Verizon and a whole lot easier to order. I was not able to order a phone from Verizon w/o choosing a plan. When I tried to replace my current D3 it was changing the current monthly billing on our family share plan. I chatted it up with customer service while trying to place the order and was told to just accept the plan and when I received te phone to contact Verizon and let them know it was a replacement. It didn't seem right that they did not just have a replacement phone option. I can't wait for my New Droid 3!!!

This is my first Smartphone. I have never taken insurance on any of MY phones. I figured @ $7.00 or $8.00 a month after 2 years I was paying as much in Insurance as a new phone would cost me. I have never lost or damaged any phone. I am more aware now. My new D3 should arrive on Monday. I did better than full price on Amazon. I just have to keep it safe until March 2013 when I get my Verizon 2 yr upgrade. I may reconsider the insurance. Thank you.

VZW is now offering "insurance amnesty" - in other words, you can get insurance on an existing device. (You normally can only get the coverage within 30 days of the sale.)

Just FYI. See https://www.vzwphoneprotection.com/PrepScreen/Show/VZ-OE/en-US

As for me, I no longer carry the coverage - I am lucky that I can afford to buy a new phone if I need to. I've only had to replace a phone once since I made this choice, so I think if you consider four devices on the family plan, it was worth it for me. But, that's me...
