root milestone a853

Hi this is my first post/thread :) I have a milestone a853 with android 2.2.1 and firmware GAS_ASIA_USAMS1FRYORTSEA_P013. I have been battling to find a guide to gain root access to my phone. Could some one please help me out? Thanks :)

Hello and welcome, jamiedemos. :)

Here are the Milestone sub-forums here at Android Forums:

Motorola Milestone - Android Forums and it's "All Things Root" section Milestone - All Things Root - Android Forums

Motorola Milestone 2 - Android Forums and it's ATR Milestone 2 - All Things Root - Android Forums

Motorola Milestone 3 - Android Forums and its ATR Milestone 3 - All Things Root - Android Forums

Motorola Milestone X - Android Forums and its ATR Milestone X - All Things Root - Android Forums

I'm not sure which Milestone is the a853, but I'll continue looking around those areas to help identify which is the one you should be getting root info from. I've provided the links in case you already know the other name for the a853 and can just jump right in. :)

The process is slightly different for each device. I am not familiar with your phone... you would get the best advice from asking other members (in the Root section Frisco linked above) who have the same phone as you.

Does the root guide in http://androidforums.com/milestone-...motorola-milestone-all-things-root-guide.html not help?

EDIT - I have had a quick look at the link you put - the process looks like it's the right sort of thing, but I would still refer to other Milestone users to get confirmation though!

As I search around for info on the a853, with an eye toward matching that model with another named Milestone, I see no true "a853 = Milestone ?" anywhere (so far).

The only clue I have is a yield of a CyanogenMod ROM for the a853 posted in a generic Milestone forum, which hints that the a853 is just the European version.

I don't consider that clue strong enough to recommend attempting to root the a853 based on Milestone ATR advice/links/tutorials or other info.

I'd hate to see an attempt lead up to big issues, non-functionality etc.

It's time for deeper searching, unless somebody who really does know chimes in with a post about it.

It might be best to just ask openly in the Milestone general area:

Thanks for the responses. I managed to establish the milestone a853 is the same phone as the Motorola Droid, except it being a version with a few software changes. By the way I bought the phone in South Africa where I live so I assume the software changes might be to support the cellular networks here. With regards to rooting would i follow the procedure in the link I posted? My only worry is that the "update.zip" file may be incorrect. I read some posts of people losing signal after rooting, i assume this may be because they used an "update.zip" file not meant for their version of the phone?

Our Droid forum, and its All Things Root sub, are still quite active with questions and answers about rooting in Droid - All Things Root - Android Forums.

Now is a great time to head over there and ask about this in a new thread. :)
