So if I have the Aloysius rom right now, can I just flash this over it?

it sounds like there's been a few errors in trying to flash anything over Aloysius...not sure what's going on there.

You should just have to boot into recovery, wipe, then flash the new ROM. You have to wipe due to coming from a 1.5 ROM and going to a 2.1 ROM. That should work, as it's worked for every other ROM I've done, going from 1.5 to 2.x

So when I do a wipe, what does it put the phone back to? I don't like Aloysius AT ALL. I feel like the phone isn't any faster so I want to get rid of it. I'll prob go back to Fresh 1.1 and gumbo but I thought maybe i'd just check out the 2.1 rom.

Since the camera and MMS don't work on 2.1, if I decide to go back to Fresh 1.1, I will need to wipe first and then load it? Also, my camera and MMS should start working again with Fresh 1.1, right?

Wiping simply deletes all of the databases, configuration files, etc, you just end up with a bare bones / fresh version of the current ROM you previously installed.

You don't typically have to wipe when switching between ROMs of the same Android version. A wipe is usually only required if going between 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1, as there may be conflicts in configurations, etc, between versions.

BTW, did you not see the news, per the original post in this thread, that MMS and camera are now working with the pending 2.1 release?

wiping basically just deletes settings, apps, memory, and puts whatever ROM you're running back to it's stock form. It doesn't touch the sdcard.

if you wait a few days, or donate to flipz, you'll get this 2.1 that has MMS and Camera working this weekend.

Otherwise, if you're itching to try the 2.1 ROM that's out now, camera and MMS won't work, MMS will work with a workaround that I haven't tried.

To go back to Fresh 1.1 from 2.1, just wipe, and do your nandroid of fresh 1.1, and your camera and MMS will work again.

Ok great. I had trouble earlier making a nandroid backup. I went to recovery and selected create a backup but it failed? Does the phone have to be synced with the computer?

not to make a backup, no. Make sure USB Debugging is ON.

what error did you get?

I don't remember but I'm pretty sure I had USB debug on. I'll try it again and let you know what the error says if I get one.

I think I'm going to try and make a backup of fresh1.1 with gumbo and stock loaded, then wipe and load 2.1 just to play with it then go back to what I had. Should I have any problems with that? I'm assuming everything will work like it was (camera/MMS) once I load my backup...

shouldn't have any problems with that at all. That's what I did. Although, I don't plan on going back to fresh 1.1 any time soon, especially if this 2.1 with camera and MMS is released in a timely fashion to poor bastards like myself who can't even afford to buy a soda lol

Ok...backup worked, SD was just full.

But now I can't figure out which one is which. I must have done some before without knowing what I was doing. If it's of fresh1.1 should the file folder start with Fresh? There is one that has the date 3/7/2010 (which doesn't make sense because it's the 6th!) and it starts with "CBDMRS" and it's got a bunch of files inside.

Some of the folders have no files inside.

the datecode format is GMT. So assuming you're in the continental US, it'd be anywhere from 5 to 8 hours ahead. For example, central time right now is 10:34, so GMT is 4:34 (0434), so the backup should say something close to BCDMRS-20100307-0434. That'd be your most recent one (or you should be able to sort by date modified when viewing them on your computer).

Ok cool. I found the right one. I guess I'm going to go ahead and try out 2.1...here goes nothing!

P.S. Just to double check...since I have to do a wipe/reset...if I use my nandroid backup I just made, it will load back my apps and basically everything my phone looked like when I made the backup?

it should. Just to be safe though, I suggest using an app like "titanium backup" or "astro" to save your apps (titanium backup might save your settings as well, not sure...haven't messed with it much). They save the app data to your SDcard so you can install them right back...pretty sweet if you ask me lol

Sweet, thanks for the help once again!

Any timetable on when cheap people like us will get the 2.1 if we don't donate?

I'd say within a week of the donators getting it, perhaps by Wednesday. No clue really.

Ok, not good. I did the wipe/reset and then rebooted. When I rebooted I flashed the 2.1 and after the white HTC screen the phone came on and I unlocked it and it went to the black HTC screen and now the error "com.android.phone" has stopped working keeps popping up. I'm in the process of loading my google contacts but every 6 secs, it pops up, what the heck??

reboot again, I think it says that on the instructions of flashing the ROM.

Basically, it's always a good idea to reboot AFTER flashing the ROM, to get everything working right.

It's also entirely possible you got a corrupted flash of 2.1. Try rebooting first, and if that doesn't fix the problem, then wipe and flash it again (probably don't need to wipe if you don't want to).

There IS a small annoyance with the 2.1 ROM's at the moment, and that's if you reboot, you'll have to sign back into google each time. It's only been happening to some people (myself being one of those people). A bit annoying, but something I can live with since I don't reboot very often. There's workarounds for it, I just haven't bothered doing it.

I had to pull the battery because it wouldn't let me shut the phone off holding the power button. It also was saying sense could not load either. After I flashed 2.1 I did say reboot and let it go. We'll see if this works. If not and I want to go back to fresh 1.1 which I did a backup...do I need to reset/wipe again at the recovery screen or can I just load that backup?

The general rule of thumb is: Always wipe when switching versions of android.

In other words, yes, you should wipe before trying to restore the backup because you're coming from a 2.1 ROM and going back go a 1.5 ROM.
