Google Navigator without Data?

I found this on another forum regarding Google Navigator and the 2.1 update.

Google Navigator can be used with GPS Only without the need for mobile data (I just tested this with a navigation to the grocery store down the street with only the GPS active and Mobile Data off)

How is this possible? He said he hadn't used Navigation at all before yesterday so it can't be stored in the cache...

I'm confused. Any ideas?

does not work for me... maybe he hed wifi or something. i do not know but i am pretty certain that you have to have some form of data because i turned 3g and wifi off and it didnt work. and i have used the app before so even if there is cache it apparently cant be used like that

The way I understand it the gps is reading your location and the directions are loaded in advance. The text to speech is just reading the directions that have been downloaded. As long as you follow the directions it gives you, the network can be off. If you go off course then I think it would have to be back on to update your route though. I'd he is claiming to have downloaded the directions without the data being on, I don't see how it would be possible. Unless he was using WiFi at the store.

I see... so if you set up the directions beforehand while connected to either 3G or wi-fi, then you don't need to have data enabled when you are driving, unless you go off course?

I would certainly think you need some sort of data connection for it to work. From what I've seen, it's always updating information as I drive, including traffic and street view and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure it downloads/caches enough information to show you the view of the route along the way, and possibly the final street view shot; I played with turning off the mobile network a bit on a shuttle bus the other day. It won't show street views along the way, or updated traffic info, of course, and won't be able to reroute you if you go off course.

I'll be taking a trip to Death Valley next month, with no cell service; will experiment with it more then (bringing along real maps and a map-loaded GPS too, of course!)

I'd agree with Google Nav caching the entire route's map. Someone should experiment turning Mobile Network off and going off-route and seeing if it'll re-route.

From looking at the display during navigation, I'd guess it's being drawn in vector graphics as opposed to being image-based (like Google Maps is).

Vector graphics, especially relatively simple ones like a map, take up much less space than an image of the same graphic. Instead of the file saying "this pixel is this color, that pixel is that color" etc. etc., it simply has instructions on how to draw the map, like what roads go where.

Google Nav probably takes those instructions (which take up much less bandwidth and cache) and draws the map view on-the-fly. Most satnav's do it this way, and I wouldn't be surprised if Google Navigation did it too.

The implementation is damn good looking on Android, though.

Well i tried Google Navigation this past weekend from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, i'm glad to say it actually worked better than expected,note along I37, you don't have 3G coverage all the way, sometimes the phone would say 1x or is it x1, oh well whatever it was, in either case i never turned off the mobile network and it worked fine.

Also, i did however at home turn off the network and I was never able to get a location, so it does look like it needs the mobile network to work.

Anyone get the latest Google Navigation update? I updated mine and now i can't acquire a GPS signal (only in Google Navigation)

Make sure you reboot the device after the update.

I have used my Acer A500 the other day and went offroute it is not 3g and it rerouted with voice directions and everything. didn't have streetview but that was it. I let it acquire my position before I left home and if I remember right I set my destination. But I went 7 miles out of the way and left my tablet in the car while I was in a restaurant. When I came back out the tablet was still on and rerouting me back to my original destination...
