Root So many updates.... Isn't it annoying?

everyday i see this forum, theres always an update from some dev... almost everyday. how do you guys deal with resyncing some fb contacts, organizing home screens, etc.... over and over and over and over again? plus, u lose all ur sms, call log, app settings.. etc..

Most of the newer ROMs today are cross-compatible ... meaning, you do NOT lose your Data. Only when you're asked to do a complete wipe of all data does this happen. And even then, with a backup app it is easy enough to restore ALL of that data quickly and painlessly.

Having said that, YES!, it is easy to get caught up in the "update every other day" whirlwind. I have stepped totally away from the madness ... for now. I am extremely content with the DroidMod 1.0 ROM, and I use my time customizing my own theme and artwork nowadays. In my opinion, all of the ROMs coming out lately are not very different anymore, so what's the point?

You don't need to do every little update. Bugless Beast rarely has fixes, just performance tweak, if youre happy, don't update.
I only do em when I feel it significantly warrants an update, for usability.
update.zip allows you to do it w/o data loss
I don't see the need to flash every ROM in existence.
and I need my phone to be usable daily so I don't have time to try out every ROM every update.
I stick with Beast, and I'm happy.

I have read that I cannot flash a 2.1 Bugless Beast ROM over my 2.0.1 ROM without first doing a data wipe. I have yet to find a tutorial on how to do a wipe, what it wipes, and how to get my data back after flashing. Any help or wisdom is greatly appreciated!

I had been using Bugless Beast 0.7.6 until 2 days ago when I switched to the new ESE53. I am glad I switched to it but I wont be flashing anything else until it has some worthy changes.

wipe you do from the recovery console screen you do wipe data and wipe cache

it wipes out everything as if your phone was starting from scratch it doesnt touch your sd card contents

before you do any of this you should make a nandroid backup from the same area so in case something happens you will have your old rom and all you data back

as for restoring your apps and data theres a few ways one is when you boot up all your purchased apps and most of the time your free apps will be in your market downloads once you relink you account

so you just go one by one an download each one again and you will have to redo all your settings

another way is before you do a wipe download titanitum backup and you can use that to backup all your apps with the apps settings

then you use that to restore as well..do not backup any system settings

if you want to back up such things as sms history..contacts..even home screens if your going from one rom to another that has the same amount of screens then use my backup pro for that do all you backing up before you wipe

then when you get the phone up again you just download titanium first and it will restore all of this including mybackup and then in my backup u restore that stuff

It wipes your /data directory. That includes your apps, contacts, sms, etc.

Use titanium backup, or astro file manager to backup your apps. Titanium backs up more, but not sure what since I don't use it. Look in the market for it. There are several apps to backup/restore your sms. Also, your apps should appear in your market>downloads, so you just go through and download them all again. Your other stuff wil sync.

If you already have your recovery console, there are settings of what you want to wipe. It should format /system by itself, so just wipe /data and /cache, then install the zip or restore the nandroid, whichever format you use.
The zip format will keep your data, but you need to wipe it if you're moving from a 2.0.1 to 2.1. That's why it's preferred to a nandroid.

Don't forget to tell him that all your contacts will sync from google once he flashes the new ROM.

yeah, it gets a tad annoying, i wait a week or so, that way it gives them time to do something and gives me time to test. i have been running chevys beta for about a week, now going back to pete. hope to stay here, but heck, i doubt i will. i am fooling myself. especially since they are close to the sense ui port from the devour i believe it is.

Lol - you want a lot of updates? You should have been beta testing Windows 7....

I went through 30+ DVDs trying to keep up with the different versions....from 6801 through the 72xx series, before it went RC. (of course that is not truly fair, as I was making duplicate copies - 64bit versus 32bit - but still! Those were 2.x GB each and every time!)

I support Windows users, so not having it leaves me a bit out of touch.

I also have MacOS X Tiger, Panther, Leopard and (now) Snow Leopard, as well as Gentoo and Xubuntu in VMs....

I actually like Windows 7, as opposed to the farce that XP was or the hopelessly lagging Vista. Still, Vista was a much needed improvement over XP - and all the idiots who complained about UAC need to understand that lack of UAC means you need 10 times more protection on your machine than without it. it's one of the reasons that *nix works so well - most people learn after their 3rd day not to run everything as su / root. XP users, in contrast, were always using the NT version of 'root - aka administrator.

Oh well. Back to DROID world....

Vista I hated at first. Then I got used to it and was like well I guess it's better than XP. Windows7 was like woah WTF?!!
I got the free upgrade from a family members computer (Full install disc came with it woot) then I bought Pro 64bit with student discount for $30
Now all I need is time so that I can move the 32bit Home from my desktop to laptop.
Quarter's over next week!

I'm still on XP, one of those bastards that refuses to switch, but 7 is actually pretty sweet. I'll probably grab a copy when I upgrade my rig again, which won't be for a few months at least. I would be using Linux exclusively if I didn't still play a lot of video games, though. I love playing around in Linux. I probably have about 100 distro CDs burned and sitting around.

Oh, and to the OP - Yes, it's getting annoying. I feel obligated to upgrade just because I can. I need to stop. Hopefully ESE53 ROMs won't be getting too many updates and I can just stick with this one.

I think I've slowed down. Like someone said...you don't need to update unless you feel that it's an improvement to your current set up.

7 Works great for me. I'm not comfortable enough with Linux. I was on the RC. A few months back my friend upgraded his friend's system. He was grateful and bough my friend a Technet account with 10 keys. So I got a free copy of 7 Ultimate (64 bit).

On the frequency of rom updates, I LOVE IT. We should feel fortunate that we have so many choices and options when it comes to roms. I usually upgrade every few releases (when something I want is in the rom, IE..More stable, new source rom, etc...) Seriously though guys, go to some other phone's root areas...You will be happy we have the amazing devs we do working so diligently on making new/better roms
