Root Noob looking to root

Hi,

I have two wildfires (his n hers!) which after 12 months are getting REALLY annoyingly slow when accessing texts and emails (10+ seconds to open texts!). As I am stuck with them for another 2 months at least I really want to get them to perform as they seemed to when they were new.

We dont have much in the way of additional apps over standard, I have backed up emails and texts to gmail and deleted as much as possible and done a cache clear but with no improvement.

Having read around it seems the only step left is to root it, remove all the apps I dont use, move the remaining apps to the SD card and consider a custom ROM.

Questions:
I cant find unrevoked 3:31, the current version to download is 3:33 - is this better than 3:32 which some forum members seemed to have issues with?

What is the best custom ROM for stabiluity and speed - I dont have any issues with HTC sense's functionality and it does not ever crash on me but I understand I will need to have something else to increase the clock speed which in turn will speed up the performance??

Is there a good Gingerbread os available yet or am I best sticking to the standard os?

ok - so I went ahead and used the youtube guide and the written guide to root but it aint worked.

I haev started eading through this page on the site but it is for the EVO so I dont want to go too far into it however I REALLY would like to know what I have done.

I followed the instructions but right at the end I have the warning saying rooting failed - is my firmware too new.

The link above suggests this WILL happen in Wildfire - so is rooting a wildfire a lost casue or is it that i need unrEVOked recovery 31 not 33?

When I hold start with vol down the screen shows S-on which I am lead to believe means nothing has taken effect??

Another user suggested turning off all antivirus on phone and pc (dont know how to do this on the phone).

Do I try a factory reset - how??

Failing this how do I reinstall Andriod 1.0?

Would REALLY appreciate some help.

If your getting that error message then you are running Android 2.2/2.21 when you should be running Eclair (Android 2.1)

From what i remember the latest version of unrEVOked had a few problems with Wildfire's so i think i used 3.21 or 3.31 one of them i cant remember (cant access main computer, its having problems)

Using unrEVOked to root will only work if you have these prerequisites (you can follow the link here, which is an easy rooting guide)

- Goldcarded sdcard
- Hboot > 1.01.001
- S-OFF
- Running Eclair (Android 2.1)
