Exactly... and i guess you cant get the beta ics any more . Motorola took it down after a spike in downloads in the system.

On a whim this morning I checked About Phone > System updates and got "Check for updates is not available at this time. Try again later" Later I tried, and it is stayed on "Checking for available update. Please wait..." I backed out, tried again, and got the :Check for updates is not available at this time. Try again later."
Wonder if it had anything to do with the soak tests?

All you folks talking about when to do a factory reset for a clean install- As a former crack flasher of a few different phones, The BEST course of action for wiping and having a good clean install of the new software is to reset (wipe) BEFORE you install the update. It will get rid of any crap that may be on your phone that may hinder the install. If you are very anal, after it boots for the first time updated, wipe it again (but IMO this won't do much.)

If you had any thing to do with the beta testing you would have got emailed and have to sign up for it from motorola website. Also the only way the phone has been able to look for update is on wifi im not sure why but i get that same error on 3G or 4G

I took the plunge and rooted it last weekend using Batman's supremely awesome toolkit (right before seeing the news about the potential ICS 4/4 update, of course). I haven't done anything other than restore some TiBu apps from my previous phone and make some new backups, thinking I'd just keep it as close to stock as possible and just un-root to grab the OTA. I did install the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, as well, though I've never really used it before.

Obviously, I'm extremely interested in getting the ICS update, so I wanted to be crystal clear on how this works. It seems there may be two ways to upgrade:

Option #1
1. using Rootkeeper, perform a temporary un-root
2. allow the ICS OTA to download and install
3. using Rootkeeper, perform the restore of root

Option #2
1. un-root using Batman's toolkit
2. allow the ICS OTA to download and install

Questions I'm wondering about:
1. At what point(s) should I do a factory reset as others in this thread have recommended? Just once after un-rooting and before downloading the OTA?
2. Is there any reason to think that (with as little as I've done while rooted) after un-rooting I would have any trouble getting the ICS OTA?
3. Does anyone know if there is a way to re-root after ICS is operational? Is the Voodoo Rootkeeper my best shot to retain rooted privileges for things like TiBu?

I was going to do Option #1 but add a few steps

(Back Up apps with titanium back)

1.) Reset Phone
2.) reroot
3.) using Rootkeeper, perform a temporary un-root
4.) allow the ICS OTA to download and install
5.) using Rootkeeper, perform the restore of root

I'm Glad ICS is finally coming, but what is a Factory Reset?

My phone is the same as the day i got it, I haven't rooted or anything still using the motoblur and the rest. Now I have some apps that i downloaded and some i paid for. If i factory reset will i lose all that and have to pay for them again?

Do I even need to do a Factory Reset if i haven't rooted my phone?

You don't NEED to do a factory reset, but it is advised.

A factory reset wipes the phone back to to completely stock, removing all the apps and data you had on the phone. Like reinstalling windows on your computer (assuming you choose to overwrite everything). You will have to sign into your google account and reinstall everything. Assuming you signed into the same google account with market (err, google play store) you can just download your paid apps again.

After a factory reset you should easily be able to redownload your purchased apps in the Play store under "My Apps" when you hit settings. I would recommend a Factory Reset rooted or not. You would do that under settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset.

It will erase everything on your internal storage and revert you back to the first day setup.

Don't hold me to this, but a factory reset shouldn't wipe the internal sd... It definitely doesn't wipe the external sd card. If you are worried, just copy it to your desktop before you wipe, then replace it after.... Then you won't lose it.

I just looked at it and it looks like is will wipe everything in the internal and if you want to you can/could wipe the external sd if you want to.

ha thanks. if you go into the factory data reset on the razr maxx there are options on whether you can erase internal storage and sd card. but i wouldn't think its really necessary.

Ok, so they're supposed to start pushing the update tomorrow, but I still haven't heard yet when it might start. So here's a thought: how about folks start posting after you get it installed and can check the build to make sure it's 4.0. Also, include your city and state so we can figure where it's rolling out in quantity.

You guys sure sound pretty confident. Wish I could share your excitement but frankly i've seen this a number of times with various updates with different phones. I've come to the conclusion of not counting my updates until they're hatched....err announced. I do like that feeling of knowing a big update is approaching though.

Sorry about this but LOCATION HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH OTA ROLL OUTS. NOTHING, NADA, ZIP, ZILTCH. It never has, it never will.
Lets say the server can update 1000 phones simultaneously. Would it make more sense to update 1000 phones in one area, completely saturating the local towers and trashing the network in that location, or pick phones on different towers in different locations so they don't overload any one tower? Doing it based on location is essentially choosing to crash each and every part of your network 1 place at a time.

To sum up, IT'S not going to roll out based on location, don't ASK about location, don't post "NOTHING HERE IN XXXXXX", it's just play not useful information. Hell it'd make more sense to send it out based on the astrological sign of the primary account holder. That'd atleast be a random load throughout the network.

Agreed. If I'm desperate for ICS I can install a ROM. Verizon can hold onto it till they get it right.
