Help 4.0.4 OTA update failed

2 days ago (05/03/12) I received OTA update for my Nexus S GSM to android 4.0.4 (~113 Mb, since a ran android 2.3.3).
It was a button "Reboot and install" there and I pres it. Phone rebooted and some progress bar appeared. After that green android with exclamation mark appeared. I've waited for more than 1 hour and nothing changed (green android was still on the screen). I've rebooted my phone (longpres on power button) and it started normally with old android 2.3.3.
It passed 2 days and I didn't received any notification that I can update android.
Maybe someone can answer what I did wrong ? And can I somehow push android 4.0.4 OTA update again to my phone ?

PS: I don't want to root my device (it's on warranty)

I don't think you did anything wrong specifically. But I believe the update is intended for v2.3.6 to v4.0.4. You may need to update to v2.3.6 first. Something that might help is to do a factory reset of your phone to wipe it clean, then run the update again. You can force the phone to do a check for the update with the hidden dialer command. Type in the following sequence from the phone dialer:

*#*#checkin#*#*

You may need to do it several times as the servers are busy rolling out the update to many users.

Or you can do it manually by downloading the update file and transfering to your phone, then doing a "recovery mode" update. You can read about it in this thread:

But how can I officially (without rooting) update to v2.3.6 if Settings->About Phone->System updates gives me an answer: "Your system is currently up to date" ? (currently android - v2.3.3)

*#*#checkin#*#* gust return the message in notifications bar: ''checkin succeeded" without any further activities.

Honestly in case if that OTA update was really from v2.3.6 to v4.0.4 I don't understand a Google logic: what's the reason send OTA official updates from v2.3.6 to v4.0.4 if they didn't provided official updates from default installed android v2.3.3 to v2.3.6 ?

I had that error, too. I bought my phone unlocked and used, so no warranty. I did the easy root to get rid of stuff I don't want.

I got the notice for the update, and no instructions on the phone at all. Update failed. Finally did the manual update to 4.03, then checked for updates, and 4.04 downloaded and installed.

There are instructions here for updating to 4.03. It isn't that hard. It can freak you out, though, as phone will turn off, and you wonder if it has crashed or bricked. The opening animation changed, too. Really psychedelic. Looked like an explosion. I thought Google was having a bit of fun with a warning that I had bricked the phone.

Now that you have 2.3.6 installed, you can update to v4.0.4 by doing the same checkin procedure. I recommend doing a factory reset to wipe the phone before updating though, just to make sure nothing messes with the 4.0.4 update. I have 4.0.4 and it really works well. It's noticeably faster, handles live wallpaper much better, and looks good. I like the blue colour theme.

I've done it straight after v 2.3.6 installation and approximately after 1 hour received v.4.0.4 OTA update and install it. All works fine. Thank's for advice.

I haven't experienced any speed issues. In fact, I find ICS to be faster in almost every way. I used to occasionally get a long lag when hitting the home button after using an app for an extended period with v2.3.x but not with v4.0.4. Did you do a factory reset after installing v4.0.4?

ICS is faster. Somethings wrong with your phone if its slowing down.

I thought it was a fake.
I looked up forums to find out how I could go back but found it impossible.
Due to frustration I did a full reboot which said it would delete all files ect.
I thought it would just be apps only,
to my supprise it has deleted everything, apps, contacts, txt messageing, everything,
is there any wat to recovery any of this data?

Welcome to AF Johnny

If it factory reset I doubt you will be able to recover most of the stuff unless you were rooted and used a backup before hand. You can redownload the apps and contacts should be synced with google so when you sync your phone again you should get the contacts back. the rest of the stuff is most likely lost...sorry.

As was mentioned earlier in the thread, you need to update to v2.3.6 before you can update to ICS over the air (OTA). The update will fail if you're on anything other than v2.3.6 build GRK39F.

Nope...just type that in the dialer and after several seconds you will see a new notification that says "checkin succeeded". You can run the checkin command as often as you want.

I can't help with the lost data as there is no easy way to recover it once deleted...it may be impossible.

But as to going back to Gingerbread, that is quite possible and fairly easy to do if you're ok with installing a custom recovery, and don't mind doing a bit of work. Check out this thread right here on this forum:

This is for the i9020a model. Yours might be a different model that requires flashing slightly different firmware, but the process is the same. Read through and Google some more if needed. The info and files are out there. And yes it does work - I reverted my friends Nexus S without any real hassles. He prefers GB as his eyes are not great and the lower contrast in ICS fonts was hard for him to read clearly.
