Droid and Eris..

My mother is looking at getting a droid, or an Eris..And we're curious, Are the OS's exactly the same? Could she save the money and get an eris, And have it do the exact same thing droid does?..Can you browse the market, get the same apps, Or even teather it to the internet if she wanted to?...What are the major differences if any between the two!?

They both run different versions of Android OS. The Droid has a faster, better processor and more internal memory than the Eris. But there are very few things the Droid can do that the Eris can't. Unless your Mom is a Tech Geek the choice for her should be on whether or not she needs a physical keyboard and also the looks of the phone (some think the Droid is kinda ugly).

1. Much faster and overclockable CPU.
2. Much higher resolution screen.
3. Has Android version 2.01 and soon 2.1
4. takes 720p video.
5. Hardware keyboard.
6. Lots of Rom development.
7. Doidmod.com app that roots and installs custom rom which included wifi tether, pinch zoom, and overclocking ability.
8. Soon to have HTC Desire custom rom with HTC sense interface.
9. Will run flash 10.1 (Eris runs flash lite which is not nearly as good)

The plus for the Eris is the HTC Sense UI overlay with built in pinch zoom.

Overall, I think the Droid is a much better device, but this is a droid forum and i am droid owner.

Well, like I said, It's for my mother, She saw my droid and really liked it, And wants to upgrade her phone to something similar, Just doesn't want to spend the extra 100 bucks to get the droid, And if the ERIS can be teathered like the droid can then that's the only deal breaker for her..She doesn't mind it not having a keyboard, or slower processer, Or doing any rooting or modding with it..She just wants to teather it to the net once in a while for basic net browsing...

She can tether with a usb cable with a program called pdanet. Costs $30. She can get a Droid from Wirefly for $50, but you pay a second early termination fee if you terminate your contract within 6 months. Read all the fine print, but this is a great deal.

The Eris is a nice device, definitely more than adequate for a non techie user. I bought one for my girlfriend when I got my droid and she loves it. Right now it only has 1.6 of the android OS, but 2.1 is coming very soon for it.. (probably faster than the Droid.. officially). While it does get a little laggy on some things, I found the HTC Sense UI is fairly quick, it definitely scrolls between screens better than my Droid (even OC'd). But users who got the leaked 2.1 for it have said it sped things up a good bit.

It also has a nice feel to it, and is rather light. My g/f hated trying to use my droid, said it was too bulky.. I guess the Eris is a bit more feminine.. no offense to any ladies here (or male eris lovers). The down side with the Eris though, is it hasn't been rooted yet. This means you can't do wireless tethering, but pdanet should work. Maybe not long after it gets 2.1, someone will get root and it could do pretty much anything the droid can.. sans physical keyboard.

They have slightly different OS's, but I don't think there are many apps that the Droid can run that the Eris cannot. The main difference between them is the physical keyboard on the Droid. Personally I couldn't live without the keyboard but maybe you're mom can. I know my mom has the Eris and her attempts to use the onscreen keyboard on it are fail, but she only really uses real computers. Anyone who is used to using iPods, Smartphones, MP3 players, other portable electronic devices, will be able to get used to the onscreen keyboard.
