Skype/Verizon Mobile

a few years? you act like that the near future.. lol. again shame on you skype

Shame on Verizon/Skype? hah.. doubtful, the carriers dont WANT you to use Skype voice... it kills their whole purpose... selling you minutes and charging you double fees for going over your minutes.... thats their core business.. data plans are less profitable since so few use them. AT&T can barely handle its load right now.. .let alone everyone not using their voice anymore. Sprint is losing the wireless war and can't afford to lose profit by allowing everyone to use skype voice.... (you can use skype voice on AT&T but ONLY when your on WIFI, this is because AT&T doesn't allow it on their data network not because of exclusivity).

skype is in with verizon because verizon can handle the data load, and they are one of the most profitable businesses. They can deal with it, and afford the cut in voice income.

Shame not on skype, nor on verizon, but blame it on Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile and all the other networks for banning VOIP over their networks....

You should be applauding Verizon and Skype for finally allowing this to come out. It's not really "exclusive" because by default Verizon is the only company stepping up to the plate. If it wasn't exclusive, you still wouldn't see any other network jumping on board. heh

That is what I have heard they plan to do with LTE. I wonder if they will start adjusting the rates for data plans.

Verizon is already talking about changing data plans... to teird pricing. No more "unlimited" since the CEO of Verizon in an interview awhile back mentioned people are "abusing" the unlimited plan by using more than 2GIG of data in any given month... I use that in about 2 weeks... I'm an abuser and so are many of you I bet.. They'll eventually get ride of the unlimited plan and charge use for our general use, which is good for all those who dont use much data. Which is probably the common user.

BOL had this discussion on their podcast a few weeks ago. BOL = Buzz Out Loud (from CNet)

there is a skype app for the apple store. you do know this right? iphone users have it for some time now

no shame on verizon. it was a good business move for the. shame on skype

still no shame on skype... its not much of an exclusivity when nobody else wants you to use voice on their network... hehe

yes iphone has skype, but skype voice is blocked by AT&T (not by skype). You have to use Wifi to get skype voice

Why did VZW accept this voice thing and AT&T rejected Google Voice from their app market? This Skype thing is even free! Apart from the simple, and maybe obvious answer that AT&T simply sucks scrotum, why does this Skype thing seem too good to be true? I don't think I'm ever in a place where Data OR WiFi isn't available, so why wouldn't I just use Skype to call a friend? If I use Skype, do they need Skype, or is it like the desktop version of Skype where I can call land lines? But then would it also cost money like the desktop version, to call land lines?

I saw this video yesterday or the day before and it really made more questions while answering none of the old ones.

Skype to Skype is free. Skype to anything else uses your minutes.

LOL!! "...and it's always on, these phones can run more than one app at a time..."

Let the rebuttals begin.

Ok so for someone like me who doesn't call overseas does this partnership have any real potential or benefit seeing as how Verizon phones don't work anywhere but us right? Can this potentially replace the unlimited verizon to verizon part of the plan since you would just be skype calling anyone else with a Verizon phone? I wouldnt think they could do voip only plans since emergency calls wouldn't go through if connection goes down whereas now emergency calls will go through even when reg cell calls wont cause they use a dif tower priority.

I'm going on vacation in mexico soon.
The video said there would be no data charges. So does that mean that I could use it on my eris in mexico to make calls to a computer in the states over 3g and not be charged any international rates?

It said no charges when calling someone out of the country. Notice the glob trotting guy in the video was using a laptop the whole time.

...why does this Skype thing seem too good to be true?
Because it probably is. The original announcement from a month ago talked about Mobile Skype to PC Skype as free, via data plan. Skype to home or mobile numbers is charged against your calling plan. There was some specific, yet incomplete language in the original announcement that can only be answered by the actual product release. It's highly unlikely that any carrier would cannabalize their calling plans at this point.
