Having problems getting a Droid 3 xt862 working web and mms on Alltel's network. I have my number working for standard talk and text and can use wifi but will not keep phone if data is available only with wifi. I had to manually program my MIN/MDN so the number would activate using "Alltel's" towers on *228. I did an apn backup and restore from my a854 to try to get mms/web working but no go.

I've been with Alltel for a few yrs and I'm in one of the few areas where Verizon and Alltel are two different companies. I had a Droid a854 (Milestone) from Alltel for almost two years. Ive been having screen issues and now it needs a new screen. I know it can be replaced but I was wanting something a little newer and nicer. If anyone has any suggestions or possible solutions on getting this resolved I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

PS--this phone is of course using vzw's stock rom. was reset to defaults before i programmed my number into it

I'm assuming Alltel is CDMA? You may have to tinker with libmoto_ril.so. A while back, I ported a 2.3.6 Bell Canada ROM to VZW and had to switch this up to get data and MMS working properly. Where you'd get the correct file to drag and drop, I'm not sure. But it can probably be tweaked manually if it's even the issue. Could it be a framework_res.apk or build.prop tweak you're missing?

Thanks for reply but unfortunately I can't accurately answer your question about tweaking, as I know little about those files. In order to do so, would the device need to be rooted first? To my knowledge Alltel is CDMA, at least in my area but i could be wrong. I copied the nam settings etc that I could from old Alltel device and was hoping there would've been a setting in the programming menu to modify. I'm not above rooting or attempting custom rom if i could find one that'll support Alltel.
Thanks

Since it's CDMA, I think that all you may have to do is play with an APN list. A user who goes by SMC over on XDA has a huge APN list that you could drop into a custom ROM before you flash it. Here's a link to one of his posts that has it attached at the bottom even though the post is unrelated. I'm not sure if it's a flashable .zip, so I'd just extract it and add it to a flashable ROM .zip.

Thanks for your efforts, I gave it a shot but none of the apn's would resolve the problem. It didn't have a specific Alltel apn in the list so I'm wondering if that's why it didn't help. I really do appreciate the info anyway. Still trying, don't want to have to downgrade to another device but may be forced to do so soon. I can't even receive 2pg txt msgs because apparently they are mms. Uggh

Are you using the stock messaging app or a 3rd party one like Handcent, GO SMS, etc.

stock messaging app, didn't think to try one of those to see if maybe i could at least recv the msgs using wifi, hmm...

UPDATE--tried both Handcent and GO SMS and neither would allow me to download mms, was hoping maybe one would allow use of wifi to recv mms but it didnt work out

I just asked that because on ICS, I'm unable to receive MMS though a 3rd party app and have to use stock MMS.

Have you tried using the app APN Backup & Restore to backup the APN on the old Droid that you have, move the SD card to the Droid 3, and then try to restore the APN on the Droid 3 with the same app?

I'd probably backup the D3 as it is now and copy the settings off somewhere else, just so you can get things back to what you have now if that doesn't work.

(I have no idea at all of this will help - I'm Verizon myself - though we used to use this app with some custom ROMs on the Eris that were built off the similar Sprint CDMA Hero.)
