So I find myself with a huge problem. My Xperia X8 is starting to feel quiet outdated... I purchased last Aug and have recently updated it to 2.1 OS. I am unable to install many apps from Market because I am not running 2.2 or higher. I have been in touch with my carrier and they don't seem to know much. And as they have recently stopped sales of the X8 I fear my lovely phone will become obsolete... Unsure if its up to the mobile carrier or SE themselves to decide when updates get rolled out. Anyway I have been looking in to rooting or jailbreaking my phone now as I obviously want to get the most out of it!

Could anyone please help me in knowing the pro's/con's and difficulties in doing so. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I am a bit clueless when it comes to all this...

Hi,

I bought my Xperia X8 a year ago today.

I bought the Xperia X8 knowing that SONY ERICSSON will not be updating the X8's software. I also knew that there were many custom roms out there in the wild that would update my X8 from Eclair 2.1.1 to Gingerbread 2.3+

There are a couple of decisions to make if you want to root and install custom roms.

1) do you have a spare phone to use if Rooting and installing custom roms to your phone goes side ways (there is a slim chance maybe 5% but it still does happen).
2) do you have a stable PC (preferably running Windows 7) to perform your root and downloads and files transfers.
3) do you want to take the risk.
4) If you have decided to root and install custom roms do your homework. Read up and understand what it is you are doing, watch YouTube videos and make sure you know the whole process before you start.

cheers :)

Thanks Gabe,

I am running Windows Vista, but could access a Windows 7 if need be? I found this article on upgrading to Icecream Sandwich Upgrade Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 to Ice Cream Sandwich CyanogenMod 9

It seems to be a good step by step guide to follow, as I don't have a great deal of knowledge in these matters. So I thought it best to run it by some peeps in the know here first.... Has anyone tried this with there X8 and if so what where the results?

Cheers,
Dee

Hi,

Ice Cream Sandwich CyanogenMod 9 has bugs...
Camera will not work
FM Radio will not work
Hardware/Software video decoder will not work... no video playback
DHCP in Wi-Fi will not work... no WiFi

And you have to unlock the bootloader... once you do that you cannot go back and lock bootloader. Unlock bootloader means you have voided the warranty on the phone... also if it is a small repair bill for a spoilt component (example the mini usb port is faulty - cost $20.00 to fix)... SONY will not repair your phone with an unlock bootloader.

And you have to flash a custom kernel instead of using the STOCK Kernel. Although it is easy to flash the custom kernel (only works with unlock bootloader) there might be unstable kernels commands that might cause operational problems.

Bottomline... with an unlocked bootloader Xperia X8 if your smartphone develops a fault no matter how small prepare to throw it away.

There are currently no bug free ICS custom roms that use a STOCK Kernel.

cheers :)
