Worst phone I've ever owned

I have to say this phone is absolutely the worst I've ever owned. Hardly anyone can hear me, I start off sounding ok and then standing perfectly still, not moving my hand, not lowering or raising my voice, I drop in and out, whole parts of what I'm saying disappears and it's just really annoying for the people I'm talking too.

I've never had that kind of a problem with ANY phone I've used, no matter how cheap and nasty.

Then there's the whole battery life thing. My Blackberry Storm would let me surf, email, txt and talk ALL DAY LONG. At least 20+ hours of intermittent use. This Eris thing is lucky if it lasts 1/2 that without needing to be charged.

I don't get it. Why is this phone's performance so poor? I'm definitely taking it back to the Verizon store as soon as I get back in town. I'm using it on a business trip and it's causing all kinds of problems.

Word of warning to anyone thinking of getting this phone. Avoid it like the plague. Almost ANY phone would be better.

I've configured it, switching off pretty much every feature that uses sound or vibration. No bluetooth, no WiFI, no animations, no GPS, nothing other than basic phone network stuff I use on far superior phones.

Even my crappy LG Neon was better than this in every way and that was a cheap, AT&T gophone.

Sorry rant over, I just can't wait to be rid of this piece of junk.

Well, you do have 30 days to change your mind.

But my voice quality is great, and the phone holds a charge for at least 12 hours with pretty decent use.

Well I can partially agree with godropper. The battery on my Storm lasted a lot longer that my Eris, even though I spent hours working on hybrid OS's. Pros and cons about both. I can say that my Eris has locked up more than my Storm ever did and I've only had it for 3 weeks. Some my fault but not all and for that reason I am holding on to the Storm. I'm even considering moving from the Eris to the Droid to see if its any better but not sure. Either way I can honestly say I like what I see better in Android over BB.......for now

Agreed. Every phone has its issues but this is far from junk. My WinMo phone now thats a different story. That was junk

I would try and get it replaced, give it another shot and if you dont like it replace within the 30 days. The general consensus on the Eris is positive. If you are expecting a business class workhorse then maybe the Eris isn't the best choice for you.

His complaints, while a bit overboard, are probably legit. The Eris can get flaky at times, especially for someone who just wants a phone that works. If you try to do too much with it at once, it slows down, stops responding, and acts just generally goofy until the OS has caught up to all the requests you made all at once. I still love the phone, so i forgive it, but your average person who just wants it to work may not be so tolerant. The Eris IS underpowered, if you can't see that, then you're a blind fan of the phone. I'm a true fan of the Eris in that I still love it even with all it's faults and quirks that I KNOW it has.

That being said, there is NO reason he needs to come in here and complain to no one in particular only to say he's going to return the phone. Why do we need to know?

Oh, and yes, I do realize 2.1 probably fixes many of the performance issues.

I just don't understand that. If they start deleting threads started by Eris users mad at their device this website would have quite a bit less usage than it does now, to say the least.

Let's read back and find addressable issues in the OP's posting and see if we can help. Maybe he'll calm down then and make a post that you won't want deleted.

While addressing issues would prolly be the best I am not sure the OP is looking for help or the thread would have been worded differently. Ive been at that point and this is his way to vent before he gives up. Fine, Go back to ur Storm, and enjoy an OS that seems to break more than it fixes with each update. I love my Storm, had it since release, but as I say this it sits in a box while my Eris is Active.

Well, to give merit to those sensing the OP a troll, his profile says his last activity was the exact time of the time stamp on his post.

But, to err on the side of common decency, maybe we can assume he's a busy person and will be back today around the same time. He'll read the "get a new one" suggestion or will report his problems solved after reading around the battery tips, etc threads here.

That's a bad comparison. He's not saying the Eris broke or anything, he's saying it's a bad phone even when it's operating normally. And any normal person should complain if a car was breaking all the time or the food in a restaurant is bad, but that's not what he's saying about the Eris. He's saying it under-performs as a basic function of the phone, which is also a legitimate reason for complaining, though I don't know why he feels he needs to vent to us, unless he's just trolling.

Fundamentally my point.
I buy a new car. It breaks down WAY more than I think it should right out of the lot. I go back to the dealer and see what they can do for me. I don't condemn the entire line of cars, at least not until making an effort.

I personally am not convinced anything is wrong with his phone. Perhaps the coverage is bad in the area he was in, who knows. Other than the call issues he was having, his gripes with performance are probably legit. I see performance issues with the Eris all the time, but I'm very forgiving so I give it time to finish doing what it's doing before I get upset. Perhaps he just wants to get his work done without any interruption or lag from the phone. He's obviously a more demanding user that won't accept any excuses or slow down. If a user wants horsepower and instant response from a device, the Eris is not for them.

I didn't see one post on this particular thread about recommending a task killer for this ranter! I was a little ticked off when i first got my Eris because of poor battery life, but once i found Advanced Task Killer, all my problems were solved. People who buy this phone need to realize that it is more than a phone. It is a mini computer that fits in your pocket, and should be treated as such. If you over work your computer, it slows down. If you run a crap load of apps without closing them on your laptop, the battery will die very fast. Same goes with the phone. Tweak the settings, READ the forums, and take all advice. If all else fails, then post your crybaby thread on a site who could give a rats @ss about your laziness when it comes to figuring things out.

We're not all the same. Some people take their time and work through things, others rant and rave about things, and a lot of personalities in-between those two extremes.

One thing we all have in common is needing help from time to time. Experienced forum users have to do their best to ignore the noise and then help, if they have the knowledge to help.

Verizon gives you a 30 day return policy. That's more than enough time to tell if you don't like the phone or not.

I wish other things, like girlfriends, came with a 30 day return policy. *sighs*

I agree with caddy. take your phone back to verizon and get a replacement. It sounds like something is wrong with it hardware wise. Maybe a bad radio module or something. It happens, there are always going to be products that make it to the shelf defective.

I get great call quality. Loud and clear both ways and I do understand your frustrations. Battery life is an issue with android phones. I myself get about 10 to 12 hours with light usage (limiting my goofing off time on it) even more if I am only making calls.

I got about that with the stock battery. About two days, maybe one and a half, now with the 1750 battery.

Seriously?? you shouldn't need a task killer unless apps are hanging up. Exiting without closing them properly does not mean they are hanging up. Thats a good way to cause more problems than you will solve. Would you open up task manager on your PC and start ending running processes cause you dont know how to close the program? If he really came from a Storm then he would know how critical it is to exit an app properly. Mine is working as good as I expect. Slower than what im used to, but again what I expect. Im not complaining about that, but ur advice about it being a "mini computer" means that there should have been enough thought put into it that a task killer would not have been needed if you exit your apps the right way, but you gotta be smarter than the equipment your working with. I think the phone works fine, maybe his particular one is garbage but the Eris as a whole is not bad. My advice is to take it back and try another or jump on the 2.1 bandwagon. It is a lot better at freeing memory when needed. I have never had a phone that did exactly what I wanted right out of the box, but eventually i adjusted enough to make it work out. Most of the problems can be traced to Apps, bad cell signal, or the user.

That's helpful. Thanks! I am not getting a full day's charge out of the stock battery. Right now it's not an issue, because I toss it on the charger in the m0car when I need too. But when we start hitting the amusement parks again on weekends I will want to be able to count on at least getting through the day. I don't want the 3500 battery because it changes the form factor. I don't need to have a couple days use, just a full day. I charge at night anyway.

I've read the tips, turning off 3g, gps, etc. But that is counterproductive to me. If I wanted a phone without these things I would have a dumbphone. I had a dare for awhile because of being unable to afford the data plan, and I MISSED the things my smartphone could do.

I understand these things use mroe battery, I'm not looking for something to last a week! Just a full day. And my day usually runs from about 6.30 am until around 11pm. Give me that and I'm going to be happy
