Complete phone idiot. Questions about Gingerbread / ICS?

you can have ur fascinate blow that epic out of the water. my phone runs better than a stock Nexus ...trust me ive tested.

I have a friend who is a phone nerd with a Samsung Mesmerize which to my understanding is this identical phone but from USC and he has it overclocked to insane speeds and has tons of stuff on it. He is the one who got me onto Straight Talk but he won't just help a friend out he made me pay him for the 2 hours it took lol.

I don't need to have a 1.4 ghz phone but I would like it to run at least as well as the Epic that I have sitting in a box!

I will try rooting it tonight and if that goes as planned and I haven't lost my service I will look into 2.3 or possibly 4.0. Maybe if I don't sound like such an idiot my friend will give me some info without asking for money lol

BTW here is the clockwork recovery file that i have...it should be one zip file that you put in the PDA section in the ODIN program once your phone is in download mode

Ok so that part wasn't hard. I have the superuser permissions or whatever. The skull app is in my apps list.

Now where do I go from here to get ICS?

Also...is there a way for me to uninstall the apps that I can't even use? Mainly most of the Verizon apps that do not even work since I am not on Verizon? Or the bloatware like Blockbuster video rentals and things like that?

ok good to here. See i told ya ...not hard. Now to get ICS there are three steps. I dont have time to list them now. but i will later tonight. ill post the next step thread later....promise.
Also, now that u r rooted, there is nothing u cant do with that thing. U can erase whatever u want. even stock apps. Go to market and download root unistaller.
Icon should be lil green android. Run that give it superuser permission(window will pop u just hit yes) and u can unistall whatever u want.

Lol. I can wait until morning. I found out it wasn't the camera that people were saying wasn't working, it was the camcorder. Does your camcorder work? Thats kind of a critical part of my phone to me >.>

If not I will just go to 2.3.6

there is nothing that i have found on this rom of ICS i can get u on that doesnt work.
You have to understand that there are any army of developers out there that have ported some many ICS roms to our phone its crazy. Hell I had ICS on my phone before the nexus even came out. Google releases the source code of all OS platforms to the public as a way of finding out bugs. Again I implore u to go to XDA.com or Rootzwiki.com to search your phone and see all the different ICS roms out.
Not only will everything work but it will do things stock roms cant. I.E. different battery symbols, pulldown menu options, app drawer options. Believe me u get the right rom on that thing and i will blow ur mind.

Lol yea I did check some out. Someone said they had 4.6.5 I think? Thats the most current one at least I guess...or maybe it isn't idk. As long as I can reverse it if I don't like it I will try it anyway. My phone already scores higher in quadrant just from removing all the bloatware. Its still nearly 250 points under my Epic though...which is annoying considering they are identical minus a keyboard on the fascinate -,-

ok heres the deal:
The most current Android OS is 4.0.4. 4.0.5 if u have a G nexus. Anyway, now that you rooted your phone you can start putting custom roms on it. Now that u have a recovery image(clockwork)where u installed the SU zip file, you can backup your phone so when/if u decide to put a new rom on and u dont like it or it doesnt like your phone you can simply restore a previous rom and setup with the press of a button.
Now, you cant backup a stock rom. Have can only backup custom roms. So what u wanna do is use astro file manager or titanium backup to backup your apps.(this will save u from going to market and redownloading them).
Then we need to wipe your phone clean and install a custom rom.
NOTE:::when u flash new roms ur SD is left alone. So dont worry, ur pics, contacts everything will be ok. Now ur text messages and all with disappear and call log.
After u get a custom rom on it u can set it up and back it up. To get ICS u need to put a GB rom on it first. here is a link. Im here all day to answer ?S
once you have that GB rom on we can then go to ICS.
NOTE:nce you flash a custom rom the only way to go back to stock is to ODIN back to it. When i say stock i mean it. It will preform like it just came out off the box.
However, once you get ICS on that thing u will never wanna go back

BTW when it says wipe dalvik cache that is located in the advance folder.

Alright gonna give it a try I guess. Downloaded the 3 files it said I needed and I guess we'll see.

EDIT: See this doesn't help me...it just says "flash this" and then "flash this"

I don't know how to flash them unless it is the same process I did before with the PDA and click start...

OK, when it says to flash something...that means to install it in ur clockwork recovery. The "dos" looking screen. To flash means to simply choose install zip from SD card, then navigate using the volume controllers to go up and down and the power button to enter. Just place the file on ur SD card. u can make a new folder if u want when u have ur phone hooked to ur compter and place the files in there. it doesnt matter. So once u odin the new recovery and odin says pass, put the battery back in. hold both volume buttons and power button until u see samsung then let go.
once in recovery scroll to install zip then navigate to where u have it, hit enter(power) then it will take u to another window hit yes then let it do its thing.
Once its done dont do anything. hold power button to power off. u will see a rebot window hit thaT THEN HIT RECOVERY. UKNOW NO LONGER NEED TO THE THE THREE FINGER METHOD TO GET TO IT. now install the gapps with the same process and then hit reboot phone.
Profit. Next step is ICS. very easy:hello:

Had to leave the house for a bit. I have everything downloaded and just pulled all the files onto my SD card.

It said I could do it without ODIN if I just used the current CWM to flash the new one. I was going to just do it that way. Unless there is a reason I should do it using ODIN instead?


EDIT: Nevermind, I used ODIN and am now formatting / wiping the cache and whatever else. This isn't that hard I guess lol.

EDIT AGAIN : Lol ok. I'm done. I'm on the GApps with cm7.

Yes I am on CM7. Looks totally different, but my quadrant went from 1230's to 1550's. Its finally ALMOST the same as my stock Epic >.>

Random off topic...I just saw the Galaxy Note for the first time today...wtffff!!! The screen is bigger than my entire phone including the case lol.

yeah u will start to see more of those phone/tabs coming out.
Ok here we go.
Now what u will need to down is download the file i post. Its a zip file. So just like all other zips put it on the SD card of your phone. Now using the power button take the phone into recovery. Wipe everything. user data,cache,dalvik all three. Now install this rom.
Ok what this rom will do is put ICS on your phone, however it is a very very basic version. However we need to flash this on first because this rom will set up ur phone MTD for u. Dont worry bout it u dont need to know. lol. Anyway everyone has to flash this first once u install this dont panic when it looks like ur phone is turning off just let it do its thing. When it is done it will reboot itself..i think..been a min..if not just hit reboot. Now when this boots for the first time it will take a lil while. dont panic. lol Once its done booting post back and we will get u a beefy ICS rom. UR almost done all the hard stuff is done.arty:
