Help Mercury Shutting Itself Off..

This is my first Android phone so the more help, the better, from BB to Android. Oh, I'll try to explain it the best that I possibly can.

I bought this phone last month, around the beginning, and I haven't had not even one problem with it until last night. I was on it talking to my boyfriend, and it beeped once to let me know to plug it in. About a minute or 2 later, I get off the phone and got my charger to plug it in but when I looked at my phone (right before plugging it in).. the image of the battery came on red and said 0% then shuts itself off. I plugged it in and left it plugged in for about 5minutes before turning it back on. When I turned it on, it said 20% charged then a minute later.. it shut itself off. I couldn't get it to come back on so I had to unplug it, take the battery out then plug it in and put the battery in at the welcome screen because that's the only way it would come on and stay on. Once it would turn back on.. it said 0% battery life then jump to 20%. It turned itself off about 5 times before I could get it to actually STAY on.

THEN;
This morning around 7, I get on Google to find out what's the best reliable Antivirus for Android because I thought maybe it could be some sort of virus, malware, etc. but about 5 minutes of googling.. it shuts itself off. So I had to go through the whole routine of taking battery out, plugging in, put battery in as welcome screen came on. The battery was at 95%.

Anyone know what could be the problem? I haven't downloaded anything but Angrybirds and a period tracker (I know, I know.. sorry boys) last month. The only new thing I downloaded was a live wall paper but I uninstalled it a few days before this happened. Could it possibly be a virus of some sort? If so.. what's the most reliable Antivirus for Android? I read on CNET that most of them don't find no more than 30% of viruses and etc.
I have no warranty for it either. =\

Any help would be very appreciated!

Highly doubt it's a virus, it almost sounds like a problem with the battery. But maybe try a factory data reset from settings> privacy. If you only have a couple of apps, it won't take too much to set it back up, make sure your contacts are synched to your Google account or saved to your sd card, and your pictures and stuff won't get deleted as long as they are on the sd card. (not the phone memory, that will get erased). Good luck and welcome to the forum. Sorry it's under bad circumstances. Maybe wait around for awhile before trying the data reset, somebody else might come along with a better idea.

I thought it was the battery too but I thought I'd post just to make sure. I was gonna do the factory reset last night when it kept doing it but doing the factory reset always makes me nervous for some reason. But thank you! I'll wait for a few more replies then I'll do the factory reset and get a new battery as a "just in case" kinda thing.

And thank you. I'm glad I found this place! It has some interesting and helpful posts. :]

I figured out why it keeps shutting off.. I noticed that when it gets warm, it shuts down and won't come on until it cools off. But it gets hot/warm REALLY fast.. I can talk on my phone for 20 minutes and it gets warm enough to shut off. I tested it tonight. I charged it all the way then I talked to my boyfriend for 20 minutes and it shut off. I had to take the battery out, let it cool off then put it back together before it'll turn on and when it does turn on.. my battery is down to 64% from only 20 minutes of talking.

Means it's definitely the battery, then, right? I can't believe I didn't notice that it was doing that when it got warm.

I can't say it's definitely the battery, but it sounds like a good possibility. Something isn't right, that's for sure. I've talked on mine for a couple of hours without it getting that hot. Hopefully it's just the battery and not anything more serious.

Same here.

You should take it back to get a new one. Before it bursts into flames like the iPhone and the recent GS2.

Holy smokes! That's scary.
Definitely something I was afraid of, it not being the battery. Tomorrow, I'm planning on calling my local CricKet store and see if they'll replace the phone, hopefully without me buying another one and without a warranty. =\

I downloaded an app called Battery solo widgit and it shows the amount of Battery left as and when you tap it is shows the temperature. You can try that to see how hot your phone is getting. The hottest mine has been has been around 108%f. You can look up the temp on your phone with out the app. but it shows the temp in celsius. Go to settings-about phone-device info-battery info.It also shows Battery health which mine says good.

Yeah, I found that this morning and mine says the same thing, Good. So I'm starting to think it's my phone, now.
Eh, I wouldn't put much faith in that, I had a battery that was so worn out that it only held a charge for a couple of hours if I used it, and it still said "good" condition. Bought a new battery and it worked great.

My phone gets hot too I've noticed but my phone dont shut off. That's definitely something to keep in mind though if it ever happens to me.

Same here, If I have the AC charger plugged in AND I'm playing a game it can get pretty hot to the point I'm a little concerned, but Ive never had it shut off and I have a silicone cover on the phone.

Exact same with me. I don't think I ever had phone that got this hot. Never had it shut off from heat though.

Soon these phones, which are basically little computers, may start coming with tiny inbuilt fans.

Yeah, yeah.. my boyfriend keeps saying the same thing. You guys are 'Mr. Know-It-All'.. but are right.

I called my local cricket store and I told them what was going on and they said that it doesn't sound like the battery and told me to call the local.. uh.. I forgot the word she used, but the "Main" CricKet store and so I did. I explained to him and he said that it sounds like to him that it's the phone. Long story made short.. He's holding a phone back for me, as I type, and just waiting for me to pick it up. Yay! I'm about to go pick it up now. I'm extremely giddy.. you know how irritating it can be when you're in a important conversation and all the sudden it goes dead? And just imagine being addicted to Angry Birds and not able to play it ;P
So I'm super happy to give this Dud of a phone to them.

I seem to have the worst luck with cell phones.

Your boyfriend sounds like a very intelligent guy.:p
I think they call them "corporate" stores, but maybe i'm wrong again lol. It's good to hear Cricket is doing the right thing for one of their customers for a change. You must have a sexy voice or something.;).
Hope you have better luck with the next one! Let us know how it turns out. :)

HA. Apparently not sexy enough, Gmash!
You have no idea what I've been going through for the past 2 weeks! I still don't have the new phone. Can you believe that? The "corporate" store that I was going to is an hour away from where I live. So I go up there and I tell them the problem, again because the guy I talked too wasn't there.. of course. I told this other guy that the guy I talked to, put a phone back for me and told me to go up there and get it. He goes in the back to get it and does what he does.. and they can't get the stupid computer system to activate it! I was sooo pissed because I sat in that store for 3 hours after the 1 hour drive.

Ever since, I've been calling all three corporate offices that we have down here and no one has a phone to exchange mine with OR they don't answer their phones. Funny thing is.. I've been to the corporate stores over a hand full of times and every time I've been.. there's someone there having problems with their Mercury phone. Similar to my problem. =\

I'm definitely starting to miss my Blackberry Curve.

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. I should have known it was too good to be true for Cricket to actually have some good customer device lol. Hope you get it sorted out soon. Strange, though, I haven't seen anybody else on the forum having that problem of their phone shutting off. It does seem like there is some kind of shortage of the Mercury. Other people have been having trouble finding them as well. You know things are bad when you miss the Blackberry Curve lol. Best of luck!

Just so anyone that has read this thread that has the same problem.. I'll update.

After a long time of not being able to get the phone replaced, I decided to try a new battery and that was the problem. I had a bad battery so now it works just fine! Still a little heating from phone usage (games, web, etc.) but nothing out of the norm.

Gmash;
Eh, I'm glad I was having problems with getting it replaced or I wouldn't have known it was the battery! I do, however, agree on the sucky customer service. Off subject; Isn't there a privacy agreement of some sort for the employees? The guy that ended up replacing my battery took it upon himself to get my number from the system and started texting me and so on. Kinda freaked me out 'cause I gave him multiple hints that I wanted him to leave me alone and I even flat out told him too. He found me on facebook and then eventually got the hint about 2 months later.. I guess I hurt his feelings because I was told to stop being stuck-up because I'm not the good looking anyways. Haha.

I really appreciate all the help you guys gave me on the problem.
Definitely a temper-saver.

Wow...how totally unprofessional and creepy. I'm sure there must be some kind of policy against using a customers number for personal unwanted use. Lol@him saying you weren't that good looking anyway-why was he stalking you for two months then?:date: Unbelievable. Glad you got your problem fixed. Don't be so stuck up and stop by the forum more often!:wavey:(JK!)

This behavior is unacceptable PERIOD!

Whether you you feel the problem is resolved or not,at minimum,I'd report this just as if the two of of you were in the workplace for the same employer.

Use the chain of command @ his work & move upwards through corporate,as necessary.

This behavior could also have legal ramifications,if you are interested in pursuing this matter any further.Corporations will usually deal w/these matters in a swift & timely matter,as the last thing a corporation needs is bad PR & a potential lawsuit on their hands. My bet is they'd show him the door quicker than you can say ADIEU.

Bottom line:

NO ONE deserves to be harassed/bullied/stalked,etc... under any circumstances PERIOD!

I was gonna turn him in, and I even told him that I would so he'd leave me alone (obviously didn't happen) but I never did because I was worried that he'd mess with my account or something like that. The manager that was above him in the particular store was a good friend of his, so I was told. My boyfriend even told me about 2 weeks before he finally left me alone, that I should turn him in and take it to the police =\
I looked up his Facebook recently.. well, just now, to see if he's still working for CricKet and I guess he either quit or got fired because he's now a server at a restaurant. I'm relieved of that! Now I can go back to that store instead of the one on the other side of town lol
