Help Galaxy S Update?

Hi guys, I have a Galaxy S which has not been updated since purchased. I'm not exactly sure what version it is running at the moment but it is old.

If someone could tell me how to download, and update the phone to the latest version of android this phone is compatible with, that would be awesome!

First off, to find your current firmware version enter *#1234# into the phones dialler and post the information that is now displayed on screen. Can you also post your country/region. I'm assuming you have tried connecting your phone to a PC and used Kies to check for updates. If so and it's showing no updates available then I can direct you to the latest leaked firmwares for your region and talk you through the process to manually flash your Galaxy S.

Hi ray, thanks a lot for that, here is what is displayed on the screen when I entered that code:

PDA: I9000DTJP5
PHONE: I9000DTJP3
CSC: I9000OPSJP4
Build info: 2010. 11

I live in NSW, Australia Which means I have the international GT-I9000 galaxy S.

I have never tried, nor do I know what Kies even is, I watched a few videos before posting here but nothing really helped so I'm starting blind right now, not sure how to update this at all, because I have never had to do it.

If you could inform me of what exactly 'Kies' is, and how to update my phone using it, that would be great.

Thanks for posting the info I requested. From those codes I can tell your Galaxy S is locked to Optus and that your Firmware is Froyo (Frozen Yoghurt).
According to Optus there is a Gingerbread update available and the new 2.3.6 Value Pack with TouchWiz 4 in testing phase.

Kies is a software application from Samsung that you install on your PC which allows you to upgrade the Firmware on the phone. You can download a copy from Samsung Smartphones | Support & Downloads

Be advised that you will need to reinstall your apps on your phone after the update and set-up your home screens again. It's also a good idea to backup your media files and contacts before the update in case they get deleted.

Hi Ray, I have run into another problem...

When I connect the phone to my computer which has Kies already running, it says connecting, but then says this: Unable to connect to GT-I9000. Failed to retrieve device information.

Anything I can do? I have tried restarting the phone and also taking the SD card out, nothing seems to be working.

Hi Mitch,

To be honest, Kies is a complete bag of crap and I'm not surprised you're having this issue. You may need to reinstall Kies by downloading a fresh copy from the link I posted earlier. From experience I have had to connect the phone to the PC first before launching Kies otherwise Kies struggles to find the phone.

Also, make sure the phone is set to Kies mode by tapping Menu > Settings > Wireless and network > USB settings then make sure Samsung Kies is selected.

Hi Mitch,

If you select Tools > Troubleshoot connection error in Kies you should be able to re-install the drivers and possibly solve your problem.

Hey Ray,

I looked in Kies, and I went under Tools and I cannot find Troubleshoot Connection Error under Tools.

The only things under the Tools tab are:
Emergency Firmware Recovery
Execute AllShare
Install Driver
Preferences.

The latest version of Kies (v 2.3.1.12044_18) has the troubleshoot connection problems but your version seems to be missing that function. You can select the re-install drivers option instead.

Just to make sure your phone is set correctly go to Settings > Applications > Development and make sure USB debugging is NOT selected (the tick box should be greyed out). Then go to Wireless and networks > USB settings > and make sure Samsung Kies is selected.

If you are still having problems you may need to remove Windows media player 11 from your PC. Have a read of the attached PDF for full instructions.

Hi Ray, sorry I haven't been on here in a while, I actual broke my screen and had to get it repaired but I'm all back in business...

I don't really want to un-install WMP but is there any other way to update the phone? Can you do it manually or anything? I really want to get this updated and Kies just isn't working for me.

Hey Ray, I tried most of those things and still no luck, but I head that there are no drivers for 64-bit Windows and im running Home premium 64-bit, so that could be my problem...

I also heard you can update through mass storage mode, although I'm not sure how to do that, would you be able to run me through the process of how to do that if you know? Also, do you know where I would be able to download the latest version for my phone from?

Sorry for the delay, I was enjoying a rare bit of sunshine here in the UK and totally forgot about this thread.

To manually update your phone you will need to visit SamMobile Firmware Page and register for a free account. The firmware file for you to download is I9000XWJVN (third one down from the top).

From the same site you can download Odin, which is the software needed for flashing your Galaxy S.

Once you have downloaded all necessary files, unzip the firmware folder and put your phone into download mode. To do this, switch the phone off until it vibrates then press and hold Volume down + Home + Power (in that order) until the screen shows the Android robot in a yellow triangle.

Now, launch Odin and click PDA and navigate to the unzipped folder you've just downloaded and select the CODE file.

Next, click Phone and select the Modem file.

Lastly, click CSC and select the CSC file.

Now, connect your phone to the PC via USB and wait for Odin to connect with it. You will see a pane on the left hand side where it will say Added and above there will be a box with the word COM.xx (x represents a number and may be different to what appears on mine).

Now, click start and wait for Odin to complete the flashing process. It shouldn't take too long but once it's done, the phone will reboot and take longer to boot up than normal. Leave it connected until it has rebooted and your good to go.

If something goes wrong during the flash and you end up with what you think may be a bricked phone just repeat the process and try again. My first attempt at flashing went wrong because I got my PDA and Phone mixed up but a second attempt was successful.

According to Optus the latest firmware is 2.3.3 but the new 2.3.6 is scheduled for release in early June.

I might take it into a optus shop and see if they can do it. If they can't, I might try the manual way.

Hello Mitch,

The manual procedure looks a bit long winded at first glance, but once you've done it you'll realise how easy it was. I've done quite a few times now and can do it with my eyes shut.
If you do take it to Optus you may as well wait until June when the planned 2.3.6 update is available. They ought to be able to update the phone for you.

In the meantime, I've found a PDF guide for troubleshooting issues with Kies. Have a read and see if it helps you to update your phone.
