Hello....and help :)

Hello all!

I am a new Eris owner, and as my first ever smartphone....I am so lost! I have tried reading and searching, but since I am pretty new, I think I need a few hints as to how to do some basics. Then I can work on the craziness.

First, I have read the tips and tricks, and plan on doing them. I am also reading the online user manual, so I am trying! When you say to let the battery life die all the way down and recharging it to condition your battery, does that mean not use the phone and let it die on its own?

The only app I have downloaded is handcent SMS. I'll stop playing with it if I have to.

But my first question is regarding that. Since I have that app, I don't want to get my text messages twice, but I do. Once in handcent, and once in the messages. Can I change this to just handcent?

Second, I plugged my phone into my computer to put an mp3 file on it. I put the file into the folder that came up with my phone. Is that all I need to do? How do I find it in my phone? How can I set it as a ringtone?

Also...sigh...this shows what a newbie I am. What is sense UI? I am seeing it used a lot, and I have no idea what it is.

Congratulations!

1) All you have to do is go into settings, find the notifications settings, and turn them off for SMS. You will still get them in your native SMS app in case you decide to switch back later.

2) Yeah its really simple to put music on your phone. Basically just drag and drop to any folder. To find it on your phone go to the default music app. I'm not sure how to make it a ringtone sadly.. I don't do that sort of thing.

Sense UI is just how your eris looks. It includes everything from the bottom bar and the top bar of your homescreen to most of the widgets that came with your phone. Basically anything that looks good on your phone is HTC's Sense UI.

That's true with the battery but some say that the battery meter needs to synchronize with the battery so that you get a correct reading. Makers such as Seido still tell you to "cycle" the battery a few times.

Indeed. But, Your battery 'cycles' as you use your phone. Over time, your battery will gain full charge and react the way it was designed to from continuas use.

While a "battery cycle" is not neccessary, it is also not harmful.

To drain your battery, just use it as normal (which, if you're anything like the rest of us, is a lot! Especially since it's new). Just don't charge it until you get low battery warnings. Then plug it in and let it charge fully (LED in top right will turn green).

also if you don't want to use an entire song as a ringtone you can trim it natively on the phone. But you will only be able to use it as a call ringtone that way. You can download a program called ringdroid to do the same thing, but it allows you to set them as notifications as well.
