Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

It's up to you to decide which one you want. I personnaly prefer CM 7.1 because it's the latest which is stable in my opinion. You can try CM 7.2 but quite a few things don't work, although they are working on it.
And yes, I think that if it says 'update' you will need to base rom before you use the update.
Please correct me if I'm wrong Cafekampuchia :)
So could u just have a look at the list and tell me which one should i download
cm-7.1.0-nightly-20120226.zip or unofficial-CM7-marvel-nigthly-02_26_2012.zip

also is this thing applicable only for CM ??? or is it to b done for other ROMs as well....
As far as I know, this is just for CM. I'm still a bit of a noob so I'm not sure 100%. I know that sense roms do not require gapps

Basically, because CM does not come with Google apps, you need to manually flash the gapps file(Google apps)which will allow your phone to install all of the apps you had on your phone.

So basically, if you have ROM manager, there is an option there somewhere to download gapps (I think I chose gapps for CM7). Once you have both your rom and your gapps, you boot into recovery, Do a factory reset, wipe the cache partition and wipe dalvik cache (under Advanced). Install the the rom and once it's done, install the gapps. THen reboot the phone.
And voila!

Yeah I know I also had some problems with that rom so I decided to go for CM instead. But there is a fix for it. If you look in the earlier posts of this thread, CafeKampuchia has posted a zip file you need to flash and mentioned that you need to install No frills CPU. Just look at the past posts. You should find it somewhere.

You cannot update the bootloader without HTC drivers which are bundled with Sync. So follow the link provided by Sisu, and once Sync is installed, make sure it's not running. Open task manager and if you see it, kill it. The drivers will still work.

I get the same error with this link, "This is not a valid win32 application"

It seems I cannot download sync at all...

Sounds like your computer is the problem. Try cleaning up the computer (ccleaner), check for malware (malwarebytes), turn of any ad blockers, try a different browser, or try a different computer.

That's because the kernel for this room boots overclocked and some phones (like mine) don't overclock well. Here's how to do it:

1. Prepare your SD card by making a 1GB Link2SD EXT4 partition and 512MB Linux swap partition using the first two posts of this guide:
[TUTORIAL][Link2SD][ROOT]Updated! How to prep your SD card for it...Windoze Style

2. Download the ROM (see link in my signature) and this script from another of m1ndh4x8r's ROMs that changes the OC value at boot to the default 600mhz. Put both zip files on your SD card. Put the SD card in the phone.

2. Boot into bootloader and go into Recovery. Backup your stock HTC ROM first! Then do a factory reset, wipe cache partition, go into advanced and delete dalvik cache.

3. Install the zip file for the ROM. Immediately after, install the zip for the 600mhz default script.

4. Reboot the phone.

5. After going through the setup wizard, go to the app drawer and start Link2SD. Choose EXT4, click OK and whatever else. Then reboot the phone and continue with your day as normal.

Hello,

Well I kept checking the updates for the .sense 3.5 ROM but according to the developer the "Development on this ROM has been temporally suspended." so it doesnt seems hey will be working on that anytime soon.

I tried to install 2.0 but I got stuck on the post-install step on the system permission, I thought an older version should be working just fine right?!
My phone appears as UNLOCKED when I boot the phone into HBOOT, but just after appears a few messages "No image or wrong image" and a few other messages but it changes really fast so I could not write all of them down.

Do you think there's something else missing?

On the HBOOT this is the info I get

*** UNLOCKED ***
MARVELC EVT1 SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.09.0000
MICROP-0354
RADIO-0.94.00.0824

Can you see something wrong on that??

Thanks again!!

Well, that's what what happens when I load into bootloader. Dont you have additional rows below that? Bootloader, recovery, etc...Once the messages are gone, you use volume down to highlight recovery, and click power button and go from there. I hope the issue is this simple and nothing else :)

Hey,

You just answered my question on this forum. But I have HTC Wildfire S A510e (marvel methink). But can I also use zergrush now for rooting with the new 2.14.401.1 update, and can I also flash CWM Recovery if I download the app for it and press: flash clockworkmod recovery, or will this give an error or something. I saw a video on youtoube were MrTaco505 does it with the app on marvel (I guess). He made much video's of the wildfire S for rooting and installing custom roms and stuff like that. So please answer this question and please make sure you're right.

Thanks in advance!

First time poster here looking for help.

I say this guide and was delighted as it looked pretty straight forward, but alas, I fell at the first hurdle.

First off, my Wildfire S is Marvel PVT, S-ON. 1.33.401.2, Android 2.3.3.
In HBOOT mode it shows 0.90.0000.

It was originally a Vodafone branded phone but I used the Goldcard method to de-brand it a few months back to save space. I am now with 3 Ireland.

Now when I went to Unlock the bootloader thru HTCdev's RUU (HTC EU) it says my software was not up to date and needed to be 2.13.401.3 - so i searched for updates on the phone but says up to date, and the link to update in:
2. [OPTIONAL] Update software version to 2.3.5
wont let me download the update.

I have also tried unlocking the boot loader by downloading the PG76IMG.zip onto the SD card but no joy there either.

Where do I go from here? Can this software/HBOOT version be unlocked???

Also, how long does it normally tale to download the Android SDK Platform-tools in the Android SDK manager? I started to install it about half an hour ago, but so far nothing has happened. It says it downloading but the green bar at the bottom hasnt moved. The Log reads:

Like I said in the thread you started, since you have S-OFF you will be able to root. Rooting tools are not ROM-specific. And yes, you will be able to install custom ROMs afterwards. Please follow steps 4 & 5 of this guide carefully to avoid mistakes.

Sounds like you are having internet connectivity problems. I just tried the link for the ROM and it worked fine. I've also updated my SDK tools this week from the same link without a hiccup. Perhaps try another internet connection? But you are definately stuck until you update that bootloader and get SDK tools going.

Thanks for the reply, but i never said the link wasnt working. The link to "Footballs Shipped Marvel ROM" works fine, the link to File factory works fine, but when I hit the link to download it, it doesnt seem to exist. It says all the Free download slots are used and it wants me to sign up and pay so i can download the file.

Now some questions:

I like my HTC Stock ROM, only reason I am doing the root is to remove the stock HTC Apps like Peep, facebook, etc and to be able to free space by using app2sd and also be able to install screenshot app.

Q1. When I install HTCdev RUU, will that delete my stock Rom and everything ?

I have already backed up everything using app backup and restore, sms backup and restore and copied sd card to my computer.

Q2. Now how do I backup game data like highscores ? Any app to do it ? Any app to backup internal memory?

I like my stock Rom with HTC Sense, how do I backup the stock ROM before the factory reset ?

hi5g

HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader

Q3. I have attached a screenshot of HTCDev's site which shows the Rom available for Wildfire S. Can anyone please tell me from my phone information which one should I choose. The kernel version of my phone (2.6.35.10) and the ROM version available on HTCDev site doesnt match at all or lets say I dont see anything close at all. The maximum version they have is 2.17.832.1.

Is my phone very different or already updated ? And why my HBOOT version so low, only 0.90 when most people has HBOOT version of 1.09 or more ?

Q4. Which step causes the phone to go brick in these steps ? Will updating my RUU cause the phone to brick? Anyway to install or setup recovery ?

Q5. Is my step alright till now? First backup everything, then install RUU from HTCDev ?

Thanks in advance.

No. The only change is that your phone will be unlocked. Everything else will remain the same

I have already backed up everything using app backup and restore, sms backup and restore and copied sd card to my computer.

Q2. Now how do I backup game data like highscores ? Any app to do it ? Any app to backup internal memory ?
I'm not an expert at this but I believe it's not possible unless you are rooted

Once you have unlocked your bootloaded and rooted your phone, you need to install cmw recovery. This will allow to do a 'nandroid' backup which means a rom backup. It is actually recommended to back up your stock rom before you try anything else just in case you run into a problem

Also, the ROM No. version on the HTCdev site is your software version, not your Kernel, as far as i know.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you please explain what you mean by backup stock ROM before I do anything. Because it seems like I cant back it up unless I root first.

And any idea to my other questions anyone please ?
