I used compressed air to clean my phone this morning and I wrecked the microphone by directing the air stream into the usb port.

Not that I think there is, other than me, a single person on the planet stupid enough to do that.

Don't feel bad, I did the exact same thing to my old iPhone 3Gs. Toasted the microphone. Fixed under warranty.

THanks, you guys. If I hadn't anticipated my stupidity and gotten insurance, I'd be a lot more upset.

At least I didn't just update to 2.1 and spend many hours setting us my phone last weekend. Yeah, I did.

I *did* do it a while back, as I have with every phone I've had. But not with the nozzle right up into the port. Just a quick brush-across.

However the warning here in this thread is well-taken.

You really have to enter your password that often? I upgraded to the 2.1, but only have to enter the password on reboot. I think I had to do it once switching out of airplane mode as well. I kind of like that added security. I think it should be an option though.

Yeah, and afterward the microwave will sterilize your Eris for you quite thoroughly.

how exactly did this wreck your microphone? i know my current Eris (which is being replaced) has kind of crappy sound quality according to my wife. and i used compressed air to blow out dust from the mic/usb area. i wonder if that did something to it. still worked though.

I reached that conclusion because it was the only explanation that made any sense. The pressure was about 120 Psi and the air went directly into the usb port for about a third of a sec.

I think I'll wait until the OTA to replace it. I can't go back to 1.5.

I'll just have to tune my guitar by ear tIll then.

I even use it for blowing out electronics when I'm not sticking the nozzle in my mouth and making my cheeks get really big like Louis Armstrong.
