I'm a little irate with Sprint right now (Dust under Screen)

So I started getting the dust under the screen that numerous people have. So I took it to Sprint to have it fixed. They didnt give me any problems and said it would take about an hour because they had 3 other phones they were working on.

I come back to get my phone. She walks out...well apparently were not supposed to be fixing the screen issue anymore and this is why. She held up my phone. The screen looked like someone put Crisco all over their hands and rubbed it on the inside of the phone and to make it worse my screen no longer functioned anymore. She ruined it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was just black.

So what does she do. Gives me a freakin refurb phone. I didnt want a refurb. I didnt want them to screw up my phone. So in the end I got screwed and got a phone someone sent back because it had issues.

Not only that but not all of my contacts were synced with Google so I lost about 20 phone numbers and have no way to get them back. Plus I had to search and reinstall all my apps because they apparently dont save in the market under your gmail address.

Needless to say I'm very upset with Sprint right now. I brought in a perfectly working Hero with barely any lag and I get a refurb in return because they ruined my perfectly functioning Hero!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus I have to go through the phone and redo all my settings and junk because of it.

Any ideas on what I should do? I didnt have time to argue with them about getting a refurb and not a brand new one because I had to be somewhere.

This is when you call customer support and ask for advanced support and then ask them for their manager and the go off on the manager. Ask the sprint store employee her name and employee number and get irate and threaten to get the better business bureau involved. Trust me sprint will F you over if you let them but if you show that youre about business they will treat you like a king. I have literally replaced my hero 3 times already due to problems caused by me but i made it seem like it was their fault.

LOL! serves you right for being an anal nitpicker!

it is just a phone. that is all. this is not a child, or an ancient treasure.

phones get scratched, dented, dinged, chipped paint, and dust in crevases. yes even dust under the phone. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER OBJECT IN THE UNIVERSE.

this is not a mystical talisman that never gets hurt, harmed, or dirty.

this serves you right. your uppance has come. stop being a dildo about your phone and treat it as such. a phone. stop obsessing about it. its really REALLY annoying.

Well I'm sorry that I dont just settle like you apparently do. I paid for a phone with my money and I expect it to work. I do not expect Sprint themselves to break the phone I provided them. I simply expected them to clean and replace the seal. I like how you say it serves me right. I dont bitch about this phone like a lot of people on here. I dont post a thread a thread every other day about 2.1. I make on statement about Sprint breaking my phone and you say I deserved it? Youre a tool that or a spoiled little brat.

I'm already not liking this replacement phone. It lags something terrible. My other one had maybe a slight lag but not like this one. When I type the first three letters are all in caps and not just the first one. I cant stand it.

Use one of the rubber slip on cases that you can purchase from Sprint. My wife and I have had one for months and no dust to be found in our phones.

I have one. Actual HTC one for the phone. Dont like it. Makes the phone to thick and it holds all the lent from your pocket all over it.

I bought the Sprint ones first and I thought they were too slick. They need to make one in the middle. Slick enough it doesnt hold lent from your pockets but tacky enough to keep a grip on.

it did work. it just had some dust under the screen. functionality: 100%

sprint never would have 'broken' your phone if you didnt bring your fully functional phone to them, whining and complaining. you would still have your original phone in your hand right now.

read above. could have had same phone.

tl;dr: whiner digs own grave, makes excuses for self induced misery.

wow. are you serious? i can see some of your points, as well as his for bringing it in.

the hostility and put downs are totally not necessary, though. totally uncalled for.

back on topic, I too have some dust under the screen. I can only see it when the screen is off though, and it doesnt affect my use of the phone with the screen on. I had thought about taking it in, but decided it wasn't that big of an issue to warrant the hassle.

If your phone is lagging so bad now, perhaps it is time to root the little bugger and speed it up some. :)

^^Wow I just lost all respect for this arse.

You need to speak up, go back to the store, demand answers, and tell them you want a new phone or your out. I would be just as mad if I were you, because I know how shitty refurb phones can me. I have dealt with three of them in my life, and their quality is definitely lower than a brand new phone.

You need to raise holy hell with Sprint... both at the store and via call centers.

Mine didnt start out bad. Then it got to the point where I could see it all the time and it bugged me just simply because it shouldnt be there in the first place.

yeah, I've seen some photos of some hero's that had some serious dust in them. That is not cool, for sure.

Mine has a small gathering of specs in the lower left hand corner, but it doesn't seem to be accumulating anything more so far. If it gets really bad, I may take it in. Or try to fix it myself with that disassembly thread that's floating around here somewhere.

I think the only one being a dildo here is you. And YOU are the annoying one. Enough said.

Don't even bother with the store. Just call Sprint directly. Tell them you need this issue resolved during this phone call or you need to cancel your account. This will get their attention. You CAN and WILL get a new phone from a service rep manager.

I had issues with a Palm Pre and even more issues with the second Palm Pre they gave me to replace the "lemon" I got the first time (don't ask!!). However, the employees in the store would do nothing for me saying they already replaced one Pre and would not replace it again, and would not let me trade it for a Hero. When I told the employee at the store that I would cancel my Sprint account if he could not help me, he said, "Well, that is your choice." I went home and called Sprint, spoke with 3 reps who couldn't do anything for me. The third rep told me I HAD to go back to the store. I said that I am never going back to that store and if he couldn't help me, I was done with Sprint. The fourth person they transfered me to replaced my Pre with a Hero. New phone shipped to me within 2 days. Pre sent back to them via UPS with Sprint paying for all the fees.

My theory is this: The people working at the stores are employees paid an hourly rate. They are NOT invested in Sprint's success, or lack there of. If Sprint goes down, they just move on to the next retail job. However, the managers at the call centers are fully invested because this is a "career" to them. The more happy customers they have, the bigger their bonuses, raises, promotions, etc. will be.

I have been with Sprint for 5 years and was fully ready to dump them because of the trouble I had, and the lack of help I was getting, with the Palm Pre. I didn't WANT to leave Sprint, but I would have if my issues were not resolved.

I actually thought it was quite funny. Anyway, the phone wasn't new by any means when he took it in. IT was used, refurbs are fine and a lot of times they are 30 day returns. Its really not a big deal.

If the refurb had physical damage of any time or any problem with the speaker etc.. then I mean yeah bitch, but you guys are some dramatic folk around here.

and you...

You were obviously fishing for the Hero trying to get a free upgrade. You cant deny that. Plus you tell that story with no detail, what made your second device a lemon. You cant make generalized statements like that with no reasons, it makes for a incredible bias read.

I have worked in a sprint call center for advanced level support. The people and managers including are just as miserable. The only difference is when they place you on hold they turn around and talk shit about you to their coworkers. 100% true. At the store they just wait for you to leave.

Anyway, it was a terrible job with terrible management filled with drones that obviously barely had a GED and no ambition to go anywhere. Management in customer service and even technical support was basically decided by seniority, been there 10 years? welp next in line--regardless of skill or ability. The problem is, when a company gets as large as Sprint, many things just stay broken.

When they answer the phone you are just another pain in the ass to them and would rather not have to talk to you. I witnessed this first hand for 4 months. The problem is the people that YOU would actually need to talk to to make permanent changes good luck ever speaking with them. Even as an employee, have any ambition, ideas, problems you are not heard.

and in case anyone is wondering, no I wasnt fired, working for that place was a vortex and quite depressing. I quit.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. I wasn't fishing for anything. I didn't put in details because I figured nobody would read it anyway. The store told me my original Pre was a lemon due to some "battery leak." I am not tech savy and just took their word for it.

My theory was just that. A theory.

I only typed my post above because I was trying to help another person on here with their woes regarding finding help at Sprint. Didn't mean to hit a nerve with you.

You didn't really, it wasn't a hostile comment, although I am not suprised it seems like it was. If anything I was accurately describing the reality of "customer support". It was more or less to reiterate your point.

I sent my phone back to HTC last week who said they had a permanent fix for the dust issue. Mine was getting extremely bad. Hopefully it will come back clean and sealed up tight. I was told by an HTC rep that the "fix" is to remove and replace all seals and the front cover. I'll let you all know how it works out once I get my phone back.

if your contacts were synced with google then they should be fine just use the same google email in the new phone and they should automatically sync

Not all of them synced. I had about 20 numbers missing. Im pretty much thankful for the Lookout App. It saved my butt.

Anyways this phone is still very laggy. I have everything set like the first one I had and its terrible. Still everytime I get a text it takes 5 seconds to pull it up and then the first 3-5 letters are in all caps. Its a small thing but very annoying.

Sprint and HTC has beaten me into submission. I actually shipped my phone to HTC, two weeks later they shipped it back filthy with MORE dust under the screen. There are threads about this issue on HTC's forums and Sprint's forums...still no official word on fixing it. People are seeing mixed results as well. The Sprint stores in my area won't touch it, some people are getting free phones, some are getting their phones repaired. They really need to at least stick to one plan of attack here.

Have any of you tried the DIY dust removal outlined in the tutorial here?

3 times. 3 phones. On my fourth now. Thankfully my Best Buy guy is being VERY cool. He just tells me, if this one does it bring it back and I'll swap you out again.

Thoughts on cleaning it yourself:

1) It's really easy to take it apart. No worries there. The guide is helpful, but I have to admit, I didn't even use it the first time I cracked mine open cause the OP ran out of bandwidth on his image server.

2) Find as close to a dust free environment as you can to do it. Once you open that thing, you'll see just how much dust you have floating around in the average room because it will ALL find its way to your touchscreen or LCD.

3) Whatever you do, for the love of god and all that is holy, DO NOT touch the damn touchscreen on the bottom. Once you smudge something under there, you will have your work cutout for you cleaning it off. Here's why: There's a foam rectangle meant to seal the LCD to the underside of the touchscreen. If you get dust or a finger on that underside and try to clean it off, your towel will invariably touch SOMEWHERE on that foam and create a new smudge...rinse->repeat->rinse->repeat ad infinitum. Then you'll see smudge against the very edge of the touchscreen and it will be nearly impossible to get it completely off. Just don't touch it whatever you do and keep it underside down while you clean your LCD.

4) Consider this: The seal is faulty. Anybody with dust will "get that". Once you crack the seal, it will NEVER be as good as it was when you reseat the LCD unless you do something to make it better. For that reason, if you crack the seal, you should be prepared to run a bead of some type of sealant (silicon, caulk, elmer's glue) around the reseated LCD screen otherwise, see step #1.

Good luck,

J

PS I think HTC should be ashamed of themselves for letting an otherwise remarkable device hit the streets with this issue. Yes, I'm OCD. I admit that, but the phone *is* $479. That's alot of cake for a distracting user experience and given HTC's supreme efforts with Sense, I don't think that's what they're after.
