I just did the update from Sprint on my moment, all of my contacts were synced in gmail, and I can see them when I open my account on my pc. I tried syncing my contacts and it synced peoples addresses that I didn't even have in my contact list to begin with. I am really confused on how to do this can someone help? I don't even know how some of the contacts that were synced to my phone got there because they weren't even in my gmail account. Thanks for any help

They are in your Gmail account, they're just not in your "My Contacts" list. Gmail retains every e-mail address you've ever sent anything to, replied to, etc.

Here's how to fix it on your phone:

1. Go to your Gmail account online and move anyone you don't want on your phone out of your "My Contacts" group.
2. Open your Contacts program
3. Hit Menu and select "Edit sync groups"
4. Check all subgroups and uncheck "Sync all contacts".

The phone will self update your contacts, this may take some time. You can also force a sync by going to Settings>Data synchronization>Hit Menu>Hit "Sync Now".

Now only the people in "My Contacts" will be synched to your phone's contacts list. Hope this helps!

It didn't work. What I don't understand is I have NEVER used my gmail account for anything!! The only reason I have one is for android market. When it synced it listed people I know and their addresses, even my cousins who are 5 and 3. I'm not sure where it is getting this information from. And I can't figure out how to delete all these people who are now in my contacts unless I do it individually. I guess I'm taking it to the Sprint store tomorrow with my old phone so they can transfer the contacts

Go on a computer to mail.google.com and log in. Your contacts are being synced with contacts on your google account. If you log in online, you can delete the contacts there and then delete them on your phone and they won't come back. Either that, or hit the menu button on the home screen, go to settings, and under data synchronization turn off sync contacts. That will stop the phone from syncing online. However do not that this method is a good way to backup contacts for when the next firmware/os upgrade comes out.
