Kies Downloading New Firmware

From the T-Mo Support Forum:

Re: ICS update for the T-Mobile Galaxy S2? When?

Hey everyone!

I wanted to hop in here to provide some additional information regarding the most recent software update for the Galaxy S II.

T-Mobile is committed to enhancing customers' experience with our Samsung devices, including providing upgrades to resolve software issues. At this time, a software update to the current Android OS (Gingerbread) was immediately needed for the Samsung Galaxy S II. We continue to test and actively work with Samsung to ensure that eligible devices are upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the coming months and will communicate updates as soon as we have additional details to share.

I can also confirm that the update to Samsung's website is accurate and the Samsung Galaxy S II is expected to receive the Android 4.0 software update.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

- Ian

Looks like the best way to get ICS is to buy the GS3 when it comes out in a week or so.

From the FAQ

  • Do I have to update my phone?
    • Yes, this software update is required because of essential security fixes. Additionally, it is needed to be able to update to additional software upgrades. It’s very easy to update your phone and will only take a few minutes.

  • Will the update affect my data or contacts?
    • The update should not affect any content or contacts loaded to the device. You should still back up all data, however, to prevent accidental loss due to unforeseeable issues with the upgrade. Make sure that you also back up the contents of the internal (non-removable) SD card to avoid unnecessary loss.

People have reported much improved performance after this update. If you are rooted and stock ROM it doesn't seem to be a problem, but you won't be rooted after.

I got the new firmware this morning. To be honest, it sucks. I lost the ability to have the scroll able wallpaper that use to move when you change the pages on the home screen. The new lock screen isn't the best either. It seems to be a little slower then it used to be. I also noticed that they changed the phone call icon by adding little boxes. This update didn't do anything that changed the appearance or function in my liking. :(

I'm trying to update from stock 2.3.6 and my phone has been stuck for about 30 minutes now on the screen that says "Downloading... do not turn off target!!" and Kies is just saying "Connecting..."

I don't remember it staying on this screen for this long when I updated from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6. what should I do!?

Has it finished yet? How long has it been downloading? The whole process took me about 45 minutes. If it doesn't work, I did some google searching and people said just pull the battery and restart your phone.

I'm a bit confused about this update. I had a chat with a Samsung representative regarding problems I had with Kies not recognizing my SGII because I obviously want to update my phone. (Mind you this is my first Samsung device so I'm not quite sure how Kies works) She asked me what android version I had and I said 2.3.6 and she said I have the latest update. After reading the change log that was posted in this thread by Atmazzz, I realized that the Software version T989UVKL1 update was a prerequisite and that's the baseband version that shows up on my phone, not the updated Software version T989UVLDE. This left me confused.

Any help? :D

Yes T989UVKL1 is a prerequisite and is 2.3.6. T989UVLDE is 2.6.35.11 and is a prerequisite for the ICS update from T-Mobile. From what I can gather, the ICS update T-Mobile was getting ready to roll out had a screwed up kernel and would brick a phone. This update is supposed to address that and prepare for the T-Mobile ICS update.

I'm not surprised Samsung doesn't understand it, neither do the rest of us and I doubt T-Mobile will be forthcoming with a true answer.

Have you been able to get Kies to work with your phone? Try uninstalling and reinstalling Kies. Also, someone at XDA made a .tar file with the update that you can install using Odin if you want to try it. You can get it here. Several people used it and it works.

This is exactly what I thought when you posted your previous posts and I was trying to tell the Samsung representative that but she guaranteed that I had the latest update that was released yesterday and that since its an OTA update that my phone would just update without me accepting it. The knowledge of these representatives amazes me.

As far as Kies goes. I have not been able to get it to work. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but every time I connect my phone via USB a popup appears saying that my phone isn't compatible with Kies 2.0. Not sure what else I can do.

Look through this thread: Maintenance update

I think there are some others there having problems with Kies. Maybe you'll see a suggestion that works.

If you are comfortable using Odin you can also update using the zip file I posted a link to. Unzip it and use the tar file with Odin.

Also, check your phone to see if you can get it OTA (over the air) straight to your phone. Its supposed to be a staggered OTA update.

Hmmm is the computer recognizing your phone as the right kind. Note there may be a difference depending on whether you are rooted or not. I am on a rooted phone compared to my mom and I see two different drivers being used - mine the rooted one uses ADB driver for Samsung Galaxy S2 - which I had to install manually other than that my phone works properly every now and than I have to perform a reboot when I plug it into the computer and nothing happens except the phone starts charging.

I dont know if this is helpful but maybe delete the drivers and try reinstalling them after which you should start Kies. Or just tell them that your phone cannot connect to kies and you need to know how to fix it!

can anyone tell me what driver to download for my samsung GS2 4g LTE?? and what do i do after i download? Do i install Kies on my computer? It came on my phone.?? Please Help..

You need to use Kies on your computer. You can download it here. There is also a tutorial at that link you can watch.

It comes with USB drivers. Install Kies and start it up. Plug your phone into your computer with USB cable. It might take Kies a minute to recognize it. If there is an update for your phone it will ask if you want to update.

Who is your phone carrier?

So I finally was able to get Kies to recognize my phone. But then I ran into a new problem. On the firmware information section it tells me to update samsung kies and then update my firmware. I tried several times to update samsung kies to Samsung Kies (2.3.1.12044_18) which is what it was telling me to update to and it downloaded files and all but when it opened again after installation, the same pop up came up prompting me to update to Samsung Kies (2.3.1.12044_18)

The problems still seem to be never ending.

edit: I downloaded Samsung Kies on my sister's brand new laptop and it's letting me download the upgrade from there and now i can upgrade the firmware. Thank you to everyone who helped me.

Glad you finally got it. :)

My phone has been running very smooth with the update and is 'snappier' than before the update.

Thanks. My phone has been running very smoothly as well. There's a few differences I noticed that are just minor but are nice. For example, when you set an alarm and the alarm goes off, the look of the alarm itself is improved and definitely very nice. Also, when you receive a phone call, the answer and deny buttons are different and definitely nicer in my opinion. The only thing I didn't enjoy from this update was the fact that you can't have a scrolling wallpaper anymore.

Any other thoughts?

I haven't had any OTA updates recently that I know of and mine is
T989UVKL1
2.6.35.11
Gingerbread.UVKL1

Is the quote above backwards?

Damn this place is slow as molasses today.

No, the quote is correct. T989UVKL1 is the old version. The new update is T989UVLDE. They are doing a staggered OTA update through June 22 so it could be some time before you get it OTA. If you want it sooner you will need to use Kies. T989UVKL1 is a prerequisite to get T989UVLDE and T989UVLDE is a prerequisite to get ICS when it comes out. If you are on T-Mobile that is. I don't know if any other carriers had to do this.
