Help Lock screen turns on and off on its own

Hi all,

I've got a one week Samsung Galaxy Nexus running the latest ICS. I'm experiencing a phenomenon in which the lock screen just turns on and off on its own within random intervals. It sits still on the table, not connected to a charger or any other cable and just turns on, has the screen on for a few seconds and then turns off (not shutting down, just blanks). In any of those times did I touch any of its buttons nor was there anything adjacent that might have been able to put pressure on the buttons.

Has anyone experienced the same?

Thanks,
Ebow

It appears your phone has been possessed. Although rare, this happens from time to time. Try communicating with the spirit via ouija board to understand why they are doing this.

If you don't have a ouija board, you can always try wiping cache, battery pull, or even factory reset. Your problem really isn't typical and is most likely due to a hardware failure. My guess is somewhere in your CPU you have a couple unruly transistors switching whenever they please. The above solutions may fix your problem, but most likely you'll end up swapping for a new device.

Best of luck!

Mine will wake up the lock screen on its own sometimes. Then it just has the normal amount of timeout time until it goes dark again. I use WidgetLocker for my lock screen. Do you? Sometimes I wonder if it's because of having an alarm on in the morning, if it's waking up on an interval that the sleep timer would be going off on later. Probably not, it's just one theory.

Hey!
So my phone's not the only one that's possessed! It started doing this a few days ago. It just goes on...and off...on...and off...
I'm wondering if it's a loose connection in the power button. I shake it around and it's OK again...I think...and then it starts doing it again some later.
Rebooting hasn't helped.

Doh! There it goes again! On...off............on...off...on............of.....
Grrrrr.....

I've had this happen also!

I figured it was a random app or something, but haven't bothered trying to track it down

I'm running a custom rom (Gummy) and have a insane amount of apps, but this sounds like it might not be me...

It doesn't happen often for me maybe like once, twice a day or sometimes not even for days, that I notice it anyway...

My Galaxy Nexus does than quite often. When logged the screen will litup, then go away. This will happen from 1 to many times. Then nothing will happen for a while and it will all repeat again. It does not matther if it is beeing charged or not.

If resetting to factory default what will happen? Will all apps go away and mail etc. need to be setup again?

This happens to me as well. I only noticed it since I got my replacement Nexus two weeks ago. Also might have started only after the 4.0.4 OTA. But that happened just a few days after I got the replacement so it's hard to tell. It's kind of annoying because the phone will actually unlock in my pocket and I've started pocket dialing and or taking pocket pictures. Really annoying...

It happens also to me. Just upgraded to Jelly Bean, using base fw from google. I had only "advanced task killer" working in background with the duty to kill tasks when screen is locked. I've removed it, rebooted, but it still happening. any clue? (I already tried to find a good exorcist.. not available nearby...)

Sorry for such a fast reply, after writing the question... but maybe I found why it happens: it looks it is connected to the internal alarm clock. It happens only if you press snooze!!! If you dismiss the alarm, everything is ok... take care that it is enough that you press snooze once, even if the alarm is dismissed or expired: if the phone is rebooted, all goes fine (no screen on and off!!)

Hi there,
I had exactly the same problem with my Samsung Google Nexus 7-- it just started switching on the screen for no reason....thought my phone was haunted :)

I downloaded Air push detector from the play market, uninstalled the infected apps and now the problem is solved!
Thanks for all the advice on here as I love this phone and didn't want to send it back!

Sorry to resurrect a dated thread but since some of our phones are getting a little old and this just started happening to mine, I thought I'd share what fixed it for me.

Mine just started doing this the other day and I spent hours trying to hunt down the offending app, then I read post 161 in this thread...

Screen wakes without reason after 4.2 update on Galaxy Nexus

I took a small knife and bent the post in the USB socket just a little toward the screen side of the phone and the problem went away. Hasn't manifested itself for the last 6 hours.
