ZTE U960 ROM MOD CATTY V1.5.1 ( #149 (permalink))

"- Enter in recovery mode and select "Install zip from SD Card""

I'm not skilled user, how do I start recovery mode?

You need to have your phone rooted and you need to have the recovery installed... then you can enter in recovery mode by using one of the following procedure:
1) Start your phone by pressing the power button plus volume+
2) Use the rebooter app on your phone and selecting "reboot recovery"
3) Attach your phone to a pc. install android sdk and execute the command "adb reboot recovery" from command line.

I've just had to reflash my phone from B06 to B06.

So I can add some suggestions.

Just launch the SW and connect the phone W/o the battery, you will see an (incomprensible) popup, close it.

Left the SW opened and reconnect the phone, the second time you will be able to start the upgrade process.

If the process hangs at 83 or 89 % just disconnect the phone and connect it a third time. In short do it until you will reach the 100%

I tried various ways from the above suggestion. I can get a popup with incomprehensible characters, by ensuring a start the phone without the battery and having at least entered the PIN of one SIM. But then, the phone reboots alone, and if I reconnect the phone (software left opened), I get the usual popup with weird characters and IMEI in it. The phone icon gets a green check (bottom left), but the button to update is still disabled. Did you do all with the battery off ? Did you get the same IMEI popup as I get?

I have same story... Somehow i manage to flash it to 86% and this is it... Tried a lot of times to plug and unplug the phone. And i have green phone at the left and popup with "IMEI" and under popup also have "IMEI" with weird symbols. And button disabled.

But after flash to 83% phone working and baseband seems to be updated, but sometimes i have cyclic reboots. And i want to reflash, maybe it will fix reboots.

BTW: my phone also returns IMEI: 0 after the * # 06 # ... Maybe this is the cause of "IMEI popup" problem?

Found that to restore imei need back to previuos firmware... Will try...

I also get IMEI 0 with *#06# but when I check in Android the phone state, I can see the 2 proper IMEI. Maybe this is what prevents the phone to be updated again with 2B06. However, I have no problem using both SIM cards (1 GSM and 1 for 3G). No disconnection, everything looks fine.

EDIT: Ok, so I opened the .exe of the update program and selected chinese character set. I found the corresponding IMEI message: 读取IMEI失败 which means "IMEI read failure".
The other strange message you get is 读取手机版本失败 which means "Failed to read phone version".

So based on next post, I've been able to use Catty ROM 1.5.1, but it still does not fix the IMEI issue. Not sure what I can do.

I don't know the problem of that  ... could you try another kernel?

Hey Catty !

I have been able to get your 1.5.1 working and no more white noise screen :)

So I have an updated 2B06 phone (not fully completed update though). So decided to try again your ROM.

1) updated with ZTE_U960_MOD_Catty_v1.5.1_wipe: reboot and still having the white noise screen. However, as said, it's just a screen issue cause the phone still works. For instance, you can still connect with adb and reboot into recovery. So I did.
2) updated with ZTE_U960_kernel_2B06_ram390_catty: reboot and this time, no more white noise screen :)
3) so decided to test with ZTE_U960_kernel_2B06_ram386_OC_catty: reboot and great, still working

So I'll be playing around with this and let you know how it goes.

Big thanks to you !

As i understant The Solutor, we can fix it by flashing b10 or b08 and enter this code *983*4634# ...
I downoaded b10 and flashed from recovery, but *983*4634# not working. Need to try b08 but can't find where to download it.

Or maybe there are another methods to write imei?

ok, I found a way. I think the fact that we have a dual sim makes things a bit more complex regarding IMEI. For instance, if you look at the Phone status in Android, the IMEI and IMEISV are provided as expected. So even if *#06# reports no IMEI, SMS and phone calls work as expected - I have tried calling myself and send text messages both ways :)

So there is a way to change the IMEI, but be carefull, DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not responsible if you brick your phone.

You need to get QPST. Search google, download and install, then run. In QPST, start "Software Download" and backup to get a QCN file. This is just in case something goes wrong.
Once done, start "Service Programming". Read from the phone and you will see nothing for IMEI in TAC, FAC and SNR. On the back of your phone, you should have written the IMEI of the phone. IMEI = 6 + 2 + 6 digits (forget about the last one). This is what you should enter in TAC, FAC and SNR.
Then Write to Phone. It will reboot and bingo !!! Now, you have the IMEI with *#06# dial.
Finally, the OneClick update tool can now see the phone with no strange IMEI chinese popup :)

PS: if you are asked a code in QPST Service Programming, should be 000000. If that does not work, you will need to find the MSL code of your phone.

EDIT: PLEASE WAIT BEFORE DOING THIS. I WANT TO BE SURE EVERYTHING IS BACK AFTER APPLYING 2B06.

Tried to update again completly for 2B06 and AGAIN, it failed at 83/100.
Nothing I could do to restart from there... either wrong version, so rebooted the phone, and now get IMEI read failure to install the update.

So back to square one: phone unrooted, lots of chinese apps, no google apps, no IMEI, no recovery, need to restart from scratch and understand what's the hell with the failure at 83/100. I suspect something wrong with the replaced file RF.ZTE. I'll give a try with the original version and manually root/install the recovery myself.:D

In what environment you are trying to flash the update? Virtual machine or real Windows XP?

Real windows XP

ok guys, so I have redownloaded all packages and made a new update for 2B06 and this time, it worked :) After the update failed at 83/100, the IMEI is set to 0, so re-applied the method to set it back to the correct one.

Bingo:) Now, 100/100 update, applied The Solutor package for GApps and Root, and also Catty 2B06 kernel 389+OC and looks like all work fine :)

Couple of things:
1) It took some time before SIM2 switched from Edge to 3G. And sometimes, in the same place, it switches back to Edge... weird. I'll get a closer look at this.
2) I am not sure of Wifi stability. I'll need to try it more.
3) Still too many Chinese apps there. I'll remove them manually.
4) The standard keyboard is the Sogou Input.... annoying. I'll find a way to get rid of it.

In case of too many issues, I'll probably switch back to Catty's Rom 1.5.1.

Hi guys,

well I'm new to this forum but I' already reading since some weeks... exactly since 3 weeks as I ordered my U960.

It's my 3rd chine phone... I've ordered it from etotalk but it seems to be broken. Eto wants me to send it back but it will take a long time until I get one working back.

Problem is it siwtches off wehn I lock the screen or it locks itselve after some time... sometimes it comes up again by vol- or power but after some tries it switches off again (sometimes I can feel the vibrate of power off)... This happens ONLY on battery power... if I'm on USB power supply everything works great...

I've testet several roms by eto, mobileuncle and catty (i also did get the white screen on 1.5.1): no change at al...

So maybe its a baseband problem?

Can somebody tell me what to do to COMPLETLY update my phone with catty incl. baseband? Do i also have to reflash the recovery?

Found this: http://androidforums.com/4380734-post370.html
This is the guide for upgarding the baseband?

Whats the actual good working baseband and kernel by catty?

When i check *983*154# is says now:
etotalk.com mod v1.3c/U960V1.0.1B08
U960SPV1.0.2B03/ZTE_U960_V1.0.2B03

Hardwareversion: ts6V

Can you guys help me because eto can't...

regards from germany

is cattys 1.51 better?

The only thing that is weird sometimes is that sim2 switches between 3g and egde randomnly or is there a known issue?

oh and my volume button and on/off button are kinda wiggly/loose, is that normal?

thanks very much I am glad to be part of the u960 community

download software from Unlock Root of Android and with the help of this software u unlock root of every mobile in the world.and then u download the recovery from the link below, and then unzip them to a clean foloder and then click on reco.bat to start installation of your recovery.
u960 recovery.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download
after this install only catthy 62 rom (U960+MOD+2B03+v1.5.0+ib_Catty)
and then your u960 work well.

With 2B06, Catty62 2B06 Kernel OC and Supercharger V6, the phone really ROCKS ! :)

For me, 3G is very stable on SIM2 and I am not sure what you mean by your buttons to be wiggly/loose.

Can you please explain in details what's the outcome when you apply The Solutor solution? for 1) , 2) and 3)

1) Shudown the phone, keep Vol Up pressed and press Power button until the phone vibrates. Then you can unpress Power button but keep VolUp pressed. You should get a screen with Malshenzu text. Then you can unpress VolUp and you will enter recovery. If you get the standard boot screen, then you can't enter recovery that way.
2) Do you have the "Rebooter" application? I think that you must also have "Superuser.apk" installed. If that's not the case, you may not have a rooted phone.
3) If you are able to run "adb reboot recovery" and the phone does not go into recovery, then you don't have a proper recovery installed.
