Help Sense crashing/restarting - don't reset without checking Google Wallet!!!

An early One X problem was Sense crashing - you'll see a while screen while it restarts (in the old days, it would give a force close message).

Several tweeks seemed to fix it for most, I understand they got an update that fixed the worst of it - the Agenda widget.

DO NOT FACTORY RESET UNTIL WE ARE CLEAR ON THIS ISSUE!

Anyway, if it's happening to you, smoke over that thread and if all else fails, try a factory data reset.

That reset will clear your operating system cache, and while it's not supposed to happen, yes, you can get a new phone right out of the box with a dirty cache.

All it takes is a one or zero among millions in the wrong place.

Anyway, check there, but please post here - the Evo 4G LTE is not the One X exactly.

PS - if you're rooted, you know how to backup and clear cache.

If you're not rooted, I really recommend MyBackup Pro. It costs a few bucks but the first time you use it (like, after a factory data reset) it pays for itself times ten. I highly recommend it (and no, I get no kickbacks or anything LOL).

Thanks e.mon. yeah I have been having this problem of sense constantly re loading after I close any and all apps. I just cleared the sense cache and data and it is still doing it each and every time so now I'm going to look through those forums and hope I find a fix or factory data reset here I come anyone else having the same issue? Any info on a fix would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks everyone!

Okay well iv done every option suggested or seen on the web to fix this issue and no such luck. So now I am going to attempt factory reset does the trick wish me luck guys!! Here we go be back soon

Ok - bad news!

This completely broken Google Wallet.

So far, I'm seeing a root fix for the Samsung -

What we didn't know!

As long as you reset the google wallet app (from within the app) before doing a factory reset, you won't brick the secure element.

From what I've been reading, there is no going back once you get the secure element error. The NFC chip is bricked (for purchases).

The only for sure way to avoid the error is to reset the wallet app before doing any factory resets or flashing of new roms, kernels or radios. The reset has to be done from WITHIN the app, clearing data for the app is not enough.

Yeah I had no problem with wallet at first but then sense constantly kept crashing repeatedly after every app closed. So I did a factory reset hoping to fix this issue after all else failed. So I did and now sense does not crash repeatedly but then when I went into google wallet I was greeted with THE SECURE ELEMENT HAS STOPPED WORKING PLEASE CONTACT GOOGLE WALLET SUPPORT. so I did and I told them what had happened and they said yeah that's a HARDWARE ISSUE. and told me I should have disabled google wallet and cleared the data first but THERE WAS NO WARNING WHAT SO EVER THIS WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU FACTORY DATA RESET ANYWHERE.. so a software reset to fix the sense crashing issue I was having apparently has no messed up the NFC google wallet and they told me to call sprint about my warranty and I did and I'm now heading to the local sprint repair center in hopes they can fix this issue or something!! I will post any info when I know more!! If anyone is aware of a fix for this please please please tell me!!!

That sucks to hear... it surprised a lot of Google nexus users too. I only found out about the issue because I had an accidental reset of my wallet and at the time provisioning of new cards was under maintenance, and stumbled across people bricking the secure element in the NFC chip. I've never looked into if anyone was successful with a warranty return claim after bricking the element but I don't see why they (sprint) wouldn't honor it.
There definitely needs to be more of a warning built into the factory reset option and the app itself.

But from everything I read back then, it is a security feature of the chip(according to Google) and there is no way to restore the ability to make purchases.

I agree lack of warning is ridiculous. I'm at a repair center now. The rep has no info on any of this phone's related stuff. We might try a master reset!? I deleted the app, disabled the app, and cleared the data.. and it worked for 5 seconds then showed the error message again? So it almost worked then it quit !!

I think it was mainly assumed (even by google) that this would only be a problem for rooted users who are flashing new ROMS. It never even occurred to me that a standard user just doing a factory reset would run into issue.

Well no such luck at the sprint store. The rep told me he had no information on this device or this issue. And also they still currently don't even have these phones in stock. And he agreed with me that there is no way a factory reset which deals with software fried the NFC chip( hardware) as google had said it was a hardware issue and told me I'd haveto take it up with sprint. Sprint then directed me to the closest repair center and if you read above you will see that did no good. I uninstalled the app, cleared the data, and disabled it and restarted my phone and it started like normal asked for my gmail and then it all of a sudden went back to the issue I'm currently at now all because sense kept crashing and to fix it I hadto do a factory reset which then caused this problem! and I have seen other g nexus users having this same issue when they rooted or did a factory reset...there's gotta be a solution! I hope

Factory data reset is the first thing that Sprint support tells you to do over the phone for any weird issue.

There should have a warning or a failsafe.

Reset is common for all users, not just root.

Hopefully, next week when they have stock, they'll simply replace it or fix it properly.

I saw that.

I'm sure someone will cook up that up for LTEvo soon as well, but for now, we need the exact procedure to prevent this in future.

And I'll be posting contact info for HTC so we can let them know that they can't use the old factory data reset built in here and call it good enough.

This is a joke seriously after I paid $115 to buy out of my old contract, then we had the whole apple/customs ordeal, and now an issue that's been around for some time has found its way to our beloved evo's which a lot of the sprint evo fans don't have yet due to customs situation ordeal...and I had an issue with sense I figured a factory reset would fix it..and it did but then it caused my NFC google wallet to die and now I have yet to find any way of recovering it and google blamed the hardware, sprint sent me to a repair center, and the rep at the repair center said he doesn't understand how a software reset could cause a hardware issue?! And neither do I so I am about to call sprint back and come unglued because there was no warning of this possibly happening before I factory reset let alone I had no prior knowledge of this happening on the g nexus and they sent me to a store(repair center) which doesn't even have the phone I have yet and they have no info of this issue or even how to properly fix it or what?

What I'd love to know is what is sprint/Verizon's/googles solution to this problem!? And if they don't have one besides shipping you a refurb or a new phone then why won't they make a solution? What good is a program with issues you can't fix! And I absolutely will not send back my phone for a refurb or send it back and wait for a new one when the sprint stores don't even have them yet and I only have mine because I pre ordered on day 1 ....and can you imagine once this phone goes 100% public how many people will root it, or run into issues like I had with sense crashing 24/7 and then realise after its to late that google wallet is now shot for good !! Like come on google/sprint this is not professional at all especially since they clearly knew the g nexus had this same issue!

Well after 1 hour and 20 mins on the phone with sprint and 2 very knowledgeable reps and a trip to the sprint repair store and a phone call with google I have now learned that when I factory reset my 1 1/2 day old device to fix HTC sense from constantly crashing there is NO WAY THAT I SOMEHOW crashed THE NFC HARDWARE which google wallet uses to work correctly. google had told me that the error message I recieved after I hadto re do my factory reset was a HARDWARE error message and basically told me that's sprints problem.

Called sprint drove to the closest sprint repair center he couldn't help because his store hasent even got this phone yet nor has he even had any info of this issue or how to fix it on my phone only on the g nexus which has the same exact issue with google wallet !!!! So then I called sprint back and from there I talked to the 2 diff reps one whom was in charge of tele sales all of the reps including myself feel google is stupid because a simple software reset could not possibly fry the NFC chip in the battery. And the google rep had told me before I reset I should have disabled the app, and cleared all the data since I previously activated it. But I was never a where of this before hand nor was there any possible warning or caution pop ups before I reset the factory reset way. So after all the sprint reps and me talked we all came to the same conclusion a software reset would have no chance of frying the NFC chip in the battery which is what google claimed happened and their app is saying.

Also even if I did wipe the data and disable the app before hand that would have the same result as a factory data reset so therefor googles rep made no sense what so ever and a software reset should never ever somehow fry a hardware chip that would be like resetting your phones software and all of a sudden your 3g-4g radios are fryed same concept not possible!!! So google reps are clueless and they clearly need to fix their buggy app!! The only conclusion we came up with is that when I reset my phone since I pre activated google wallet it has a buggy security feature which prevents someone from stealing or finding your phone and wiping the data and using your google wallet account which contains your $$$ almost as if it locked me out to save me from identity theft.

problem is it won't let me back in and they claim the factory data reset (software) somehow fryed my hardware NFC chip!!!! Not possible!!! Google wallet worked on day 1 I had it all set up and ready to go so I know my chip wasn't broke from the start and I only did a reset in hopes of fixing HTC sense from always crashing and the factory reset did fix that but then google wallets buggy feature locked me out in mine and sprints opinion/googles opinion my factory reset fried the hardware supposedly!?!?! I'd love to know how that happened so would the 3 sprint reps I spoke with!!

And the last rep who's in charge of telesales took my # down and will be calling me personally once he has more info on this issue and if google will be working on a fix for this because obviously this is a huge PROBLEM FOR SPRINT AS WELL AS HTC and google clearly doesn't care!!!! They tried to make me think htc/sprint sold me a phone that once u factory reset it will fry the hardware!!!! Fry the hardware how!?!?

Welcome! More info would be helpful.
What handset was the card in before the Evo LTE?
What files are on the card?
Manufacturer of card?
etc.

Alot of work involved, but if you remove all files from the card and re-insert it to the phone does it still cause the problem? (determines if this is a hardware issue or software issue). You could go folder by folder and add the files back to where they were and track down which file or folder is causing the conflict? (This SD card issue will probably be specific to your situation - others probably have different things causing issues with Sense)

Was the SD card partitioned?

I suggest to everyone when you want to insert an SD card, format it first.

If you are using an old card, transfer the info over to your pc, and completely clean the card out, if partitioned format it on your pc. Once its inserted in the phone, format it again while in the phone.
