Along with many others, I participated in the beta testing of Smoked Glass v6.0 ESE53. I'd already been using another 2.1 ESE53 ROM and tried a couple others, as well. From my vantage point (this is just my 2 cents...if that's worth anything) my impression of Smoked Glass v6.0 ESE53 is WOW!

So WOW doesn't mean a lot, but let me try to put it in some concrete terms. Compared to other 2.1 ESE53 ROMs I've found Smoked Glass v6.0 to run very smooth and fast. It also runs cool as well. Whereas other ESE53 ROMs might run 100F+ on some tasks, it seems I have a hard time getting it to go up into the 90F range and seldom over 100F. Last night after I had my Droid sitting on idle for a while, I picked it up and noticed that the CPU temp was 59F which is lower than I've ever seen it at idle.

In fact, I've found it to run to fast and smooth that I reinstalled with 250-800 overclock (instead of 1000) ... and then finally decided to reinstall and clock it to 250-600.

Battery life has also improved, as well. Yesterday at the end of the day it was still showing 50%. And now today after having unplugged it 4 hours ago (only briefly connected via USB to transfer some files) I've yet to drop to 80%. So I'm very happy in that regard.

I've been a long-time user of Bugless Beast and didn't think any other ROM could pull me away ... until I met Smoked Glass v6.0.

AdamZ has also done an outstanding job at giving you a LOT of choices during the install process. If you don't want to include some stock apps in the install, you can choose to delete them (i.e. Amazon MP3, CorpCal, etc.). But you do need to read the menu choices carefully to be sure you * for those you want included or * for those you want deleted ... based on the menu heading directions.

The only 'hitch' I and some others had was with Maps. Some folks have found uninstalling (Google) Maps before loading SG 6 to work better (if you are running Maps as a Market installation...meaning that from the Market you can choose Uninstall).

Now, your mileage may vary. If anything, it seems no two Droids are exactly alike. So this is just my personal experience based on my Droid with the apps I have installed.

I agree. I have not tested it out as much but my impression so far is very favorable (not unexpected since I was very happy with SG5.1. I am running it with the Helix launcher is its very smooth.

I had no problem with the maps but I did face that problem when I installed the simply stunning ROM.

Likewise I'm using the HelixLauncher ... and I LOVE it! Its an excellent addition to Smoked Glass 6.0.

This is much easier.

Download the file and drop directly onto your SD Card (do not download using Chrome).

Reboot into recovery

Go to install

Go to chose Rom.

Find the file

Hit install.

Follow instructions.

Easy peasy.

You should, though, flash /data, so that will wipe your phone. You will have to re-install a bunch of things after that, similar to Nandroid backup.

So I guess I shouldn't say it's easier than update.zip, lol.

I think Needsdecaf pretty well covered the bases on this, however, one thing that seemed to pop up multiple times during the beta version testing of SG was that some people were putting the rom.tgz file in the root of /sdcard with the wrong file extension. Why? If your computer isn't set-up to show file extensions, browsers will sometime tinker with that and you don't see the change when your file extensions are 'invisible'.

For me, I've had no problem using downloads via Chrome, but that's because I have my computer set-up to show the full extensions and before I click to save the download file, I make the accurate file name is showing since it changes something like rom.tgz to rom.tgz.tar ... and that throws the install off if you aren't watching. I've even found IE (at least for me) to sometimes alter the file extension, too.

Also, assuming you are already rooted, I would HIGHLY recommend Titanium Backup (Donate Version...to unlock the full features...that info is in the app itself not as a paid version on the Market). That way for a new ROM you can start from a clean slate by wiping everything out, but then being able to restore your apps AND their settings.

Or with the SG 6 rom.tgz install you do have the option (3rd on the list I think) to wipe data but save apps (but not for any paid apps). But I still find Titanium Backup to do it better since it can also save "protected" apps (i.e. paid apps and some non-paid apps) AND their settings, then restore them. Since I have 2 Gmail and 5 Email accounts, it saves time re-creating all those accounts and settings ... though I believe you will need to at least initially log in to your primary Gmail account when first booting up on the new ROM.

yes i no, but in 5.0.x adamZ posted a screenshot of the newer lockscreen but the actual rom had the old one. so I was hoping a user could tell me.

AdamZ has posted some screenshots on the 6.01 page...just that the lockscreen isn't one of those things that matter to me. You could post that question over there. Whether there's a choice in the latest 6.01 install I can't say. But I might be flashing that tonight as he made some updates to the theme.

well loaded sgv6 last night and im a fan! works very well and lots of choices. i think ill reload it a few times and try some different configurations of it to see what i like the best!

3)What are shells? You have an option at install of the rom to install one of 3 shells.
4)Another option is to set how many mb/s you want for the video recorder on the phone. stock is 3mb/s and you can choose up to 9mb/s. Why wouldnt you want to go with the highest 9mb/s? Does it lag?

Low Brightness: Depends how you loaded it. If you opted to install in /system then should be an app icon in the app drawer. Or if to /sdcard the apk file should be there on the card you can install yourself via Astro or similar. I didn't find it intuitive as to how to use ... and I think Brighteriffic available free on the Market is better so don't use this one.

Audio Toggle: That one didn't make sense to me either and location similar to choice made on low brightness. I use AudioManager, free on Market, which serves my needs. Maybe this has another feature, but found it unclear.

Shell options: Basically AdamZ's comment to inquiries was to choose the stock option. Apparently only if you are a serious hacker that works with "Bash" and/or other stuff like that. And if I understand correctly, the only time this would be noticed would be when in ADB shell, apparently when on a Mac computer or running Linux/Ubuntu on a Windows computer.

Video Recording: I've found the stock 3mb/s to be fine for my needs. But higher mb/s gets even better quality...to a degree. The first time I tried a hack at 8/mbs I found some pausing and pixelation. After searching I found that others had similar complaints. Turns out that the stock sdcard in the Droid is a "Class 2" (slowest) 16gb card. For everyday purposes that is fine. But on 8mb/s video recording sometimes the sdcard can't keep up with the large amount of data being shoved at it, hence the video recording can suffer. I opted to upgrade to a "Class 6" (faster) sdcard but that's about $60+. Even at that I'm satisfied with the 4mb/s video quality. Though if you want DVD quality recording the 8-9mb/s makes sense if you can get it to work okay on the stock Class 2 sdcard...didn't have success myself. I think that goes back to my 'your mileage my vary' view since some Droids seem to handle it okay with the stock card.

i just want to say that battery life is outstanding now. with SG 5.0.1 i used to have to keep my phone in plugged whenever possible throughout the day- now with 6.0.1 it literally feels like i have a brand new extended battery!

my battery life is great also. people keep saying the ese53 base is a more efficient O.S.

this rom is faster, smoother, and has better battery life than any rom/kernel combo i have been on yet.

Just a head's up that the SG6 ROM (at least 6.0) doesn't automatically block the OTA updates (see the SG thread for details). My understanding is that SPRecovery would still ask for permission but it would be easy to select the wrong one. AdamZ created a patch to block the OTAs in that thread.

You install it just like you did the SG install, put it on the root of the sd card and then boot into recovery and choose "install ROM" then choose OTA blocker. It's that easy.
