Phone with 512MB or 1GB of ram?

Hello all you androids.

So my search for a smartphone continues. I am on verizon in which I want to renew the two-year contract.

Here's my question: do I really NEED to 1GB of RAM to stay current for the next 2 years? I am concerned that 512MB of RAM will not suffice this.

I also do not want a phone with a single-core processor. I was at the verizon store today... and got to play around with a Samsung Charge. Needless to say, the Charge has a great display, but I was not impressed with all of the studdering from scrolling within the main menu.

Totally agree. Go with 1 GB of RAM. Once you start adding app. and they are running in the background, you will need that extra RAM. Dual core is good too. I would add to get internal storage of 10GB or higher as well. Since you say this will need to last 2 yrs.

Pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S3 and get 2gb of RAM, not to mention everything else that makes this the best phone coming on the market this month.

Go for 2GB RAM :)

I've the HTC One X with 1GB RAM ... and this isn't enough!

I think, with 2GB RAM, the One's Sense mightn't restart from time to time ;)

Harry

What the heck are you doing where 1 GB isn't enough? I mean, its not like 2 GB is excessive (you can never have too much RAM) but geeze, 1 GB has been more than enough for me. I'm just thankful I'm out of 256 MB-land and I can finally have the web browser and the launcher open at the same time.

The answer to your questions is something my mother taught me ( it`s better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it)

Its more like.. Dual airbags.. One maker made it.. They all fell in line.

With overlays and ics and big games.. It ain't hard to push the envelope on 1gb...

Its not really hard to, but there's never really been a moment (yet) on my Galaxy Nexus where I have thought, hmm, this app I was just using had to close because I ran out of RAM (which happened on pretty much any app on my Eris with 256 MB). Usually app that did close, I opened awhile ago, and haven't bothered closing.

it may become the new standard (of course it will until they start on 3gigs),but I think only the 3 and the htc that you're talking about makes itright nowso I wouldn't call it the new standard yet.in other words I don't see a pattern yet.

it was first an LG phone that announced their new phone will have 2gb..
then it was GS3...

i will guess the next Moto will have 2gb...

and the next HTC will have 2GB...

in terms of phone time line.. it moves very fast...

Of course. It's just not the new standard yet when only one top end phone from each manufacturor sometime in the next year or two is where we are actually at. Too many phones with 1 or less will be made (as in, standard) before the average phone has 2gb of RAM.

I think the amount of people who go for custom roms, freezing apps, overclocking etc etc suggests they want more from their phone. Microsoft invented "pocket pc" but what we have now is the actuall pocket computer. So yes the specs need to catch up!

yes. absolutely true. But no custom ROM developed (so far) would perform any differently if more than 1g was available.
Freezing apps, I don't know why that would need more RAM.
And overclocking... Does this require more RAM? I personally down know what to do with the 1.5ghz I have.
But we can only do so much multi-tasking on a phone anyway because of our own limitations, with the limited windows (1 and now 2 on a phone's desktop at the same time) (if we can't see it, we forget it. It gets too confusing).
And pocket computers. Even my 320gb powerhouse, 1.73ghz Pentium (.23 more than my phone) Gateway Laptop only has 3gb of RAM. But you may, maybe possibly, need that as the number of windows you can work on at the same time can be many, with each one doing an infinite number of processes.
This kind of demand can't he possible on something that you can fit into your pocket.
You would have to play two or three high-speed high resolution 3-D graphics video games, and talk on the phone at the same time, to slow down even just 1gb RAM.
Okay. Maybe not. Then you might need 2.
Then again, if they start selling enough phones with super-RAM, I guess they will build games much more complex, which they will have to sell for much more money, which will be tough because the people with those capable phones are broke because the phone cost $800 because it cost more for the 2gig technology...
Unless.. Maybe it would be cheaper to figure out how to better manage the RAM that's already there than to add to it. Which would be what, faster processing capability?
Oh. They decided 1.5 was fast enough in a phone, didn't they? Hence, we overclock so that we can... what...have more impressive benchmarks?
I don't know where this is going...
Sorry

Edit: One more thing:

Starting with 1g RAM, I got these going:

Neutron Music
Speedometer
Navigator
and:
gps
wifi
batt indicate
clock
tapatalk
lookout
and:
no less than 37 processes
including
(5 widgets,icons,wp,etc)
AND

And I still have about 300mb to play with
(in case someone calls me)
(yeah right)

No I never said those things need more RAM I was just generalising. But I can see where the OP was coming from. It's probably down to the apps you want to use more than multi-tasking, as android can deal with processes in it's own way. Possibly music production apps similar to those on iOS, & gaming.

Me I'm happy to go with the crowd & open up the potential of my device as it becomes possible. For people with money to spend I say get the best you can afford :) .

OK even I said we are now into mobile computing but then maybe we need to pinch ourselves & remember, it is a mobile phone, first & foremost. I don't think I'd wanna do "serious" music production on a small screen, I'd want a tablet for that!

I think the future holds a deviation of our expectations. We can push the specs but then comes along something like NFC chip for paying for goods. We're not living on the moon but we have other space-age things.
