Help Problem sending/receiving & duplicate texts

I'm having problems with text messages. I use Handcent and i'll send a text then an hour later see it's still sending it never sent.

Does it show the sending/refresh circle spinning? I was having this on some texts with Handcent but they did send, it just showed still sending on my end.

Check with the recipient and see if and when they received it.

I did ask one time if someone got my message and was told no. One person said they got my message a couple times. I don't get it. But the circle is always still spinning guess I'll check the messaging app next time this happens. I thought I had it set on to tell me if message don't send. I'll have to check my settings.

i had the same type of issue...

i was using google voice to text... sometimes i would get that spinning circle like it was trying to send. and it might come back with an error some time later. it would also take a long time to open the app (5-8 sec)

google voice uses data... and I know 100% that sprint data was in the crapper lately (EVO og) in my area.

so i went back to the built-in text app.. which uses sprint's CDMA voice network. I dont have issues anymore.

hopefully once the new vision upgrade is done.. i can use google voice again.

So the built in messaging app uses Sprint's CDMA Network and does Handcent not? I can use google voice and say text to so and so and it works is that what you mean? My Google voice just doesn't work when I'm driving sometimes but I may just not have a good signal I don't know. Maybe I'll just use Sprints messaging app and not Handcent.

Handcent uses the CDMA network to the best of my knowledge, and I seem to remember seeing something about using wifi as well now.

They are pretty good on getting patches out, so if this is an issue they will probably have a fix soon. You could use the stock messaging app till then if it continues to be an issue for you.

Yeah I hate to have to switch cause I am so used to this one and know it from having it on both of my other EVO'S. I was looking at GO SMS and Chomp. I haven't even configured Handcent yet for everyone so I may just wait it out. It doesn't happen all the time and hasn't happened since earlier today so will see. Thanks!

Handcent, Go SMS, Stock Messaging -- they are essentially viewers or browsers for the same underlying SMS text protocol. They might use Wifi for the downloading of MMS images and such, but the underlying text protocol is the same -- the emergency carrier band of regular CDMA cellular. So any of those apps are the same and should work under 1x cellular.

Google Voice to the extent that you haven't combined your numbers uses data so it has the possibility of being less reliable when at 1x, but more reliable if your cell service is bad but you have wifi.

Well I still don't get it cause this morning I saw two text not send the circle was still spinning from yesterday. I set my handcent now to tell me the message is sent but I never had this problem before on my 3D or my OG EVO. Last night most of my text went right through but one then I saw today that one and one from earlier in the afternoon didn't. My signal when not on wifi sucks in my house so maybe that's it I don't know. Even though I know text don't use 3g or wifi.

I agree this is confusing, but if my memory is right, I think we found at the 3D launch that SMS is using broadband (3G/wifi), even though it's supposed to be a 2G feature.

I haven't heard this, but it seems like I should be able to test it easily. I'll try it sometime tonight. Apologies if I'm wrong on this.

My memory is that when we turned off mobile data and wifi, SMS didn't go thru.

I'd say no worries on getting it wrong (if that's true) - SMS is supposed to be a 2G service (but then again, that was per GSM operational specs, so who knows with CDMA).

And when considering that Handcent will allow single messages of more than 140 chars, via prefs, and it works on CMDA without becoming an MMS to accommodate that, there's clearly something outside of the norm happening.

PS - this is one example of the discussion I'd thought I'd remembered -

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/370517-sending-pictures-over-wifi.html

So, we need to test this all again.

Plus, I have no idea how anything will be affected by 1x Advanced or LTE, if at all. :(

I just turned off 3G and Wifi. No indicators on the status bar except the 6 bars. I was able to send and receive SMS with a coworker.

This is the same behavior as my 3vo and EvOG. I know this cause i disable the data connection when screen is off via tasker (with the exception of the presence of certain background apps running). And during these times, I've always gotten my text notifications as they come in.

But i thought with 3G off text can still be sent and gotten and calls can be gotten. I don't know but I just kow with the 3D I didn't have this problem. And it's not all the time just sometimes it's weird.

The link I posted earlier said that the 3G issue was with mms, not sms.

I recall that Handcent had an option to send longer messages via mms, and I believe that it does so when multiple recipients are involved.

Do those apply?

I tested on the Evo LTE with SMS (not MMS):

1) All antennas on (BT, WIFI, "Mobile Network") texts send (obviously)

2) With WIFI off and "Mobile Network" off (and within the Mobile Network settings, "Domestic Data" and "Domestic Voice" off), texts send -- lending evidence that texts are not 3G dependent but instead are ok on 1xRTT.

3) With "Airplane Mode" on, texts do not send.

4) With "Airplane Mode" on and Wifi turned ON, texts do not send. Evidence that regular texts will not send over Wifi. However, Google Voice texts (that solely rely on data) do send.

Based on this, I'm pretty sure SMS is transmitted by 1xRTT only.

1xRTT is 3G, I think that you meant 2G.

We all agree, sms doesn't rely on 3G or wifi, appreciate the testing. :)

not tested.. but have read that ...

sms is done on the same network as voice.
it is squeezed in between the voice calls on that system. it does not interrupt voice transmissions and very little space. that is why many argue that carriers should not charge for sms service... just a way to gauge the customers.

i do know...
when I dont have 3G or wifi .. google voice has a lot of trouble..
so i use the sprint text app and it works fine.

Without going into the details of cell protocols, this should help people figure out if they have the proper reception to use SMS services.

Note, MMS messages are usually wrapped by an SMS message. So even if MMS requires 3G or WiFi, and you don't have those, you should still get the wrapper SMS message.

So it turns out I'm having SMS messages as well. When I first got my phone I set up GoSMS like I normally do and noticed that I was having some text issues. I called Sprint and the recording that greeted me said that if I was calling with text message issues they were aware of the problem and were working on it. Alright, it's a Sprint network issue then I thought to myself. Fast forward and I'm still having issues. Most of my SMS are sent but I'm receiving them either delayed or in some cases not at all. I checked my stock messaging app and it also doesn't have any incoming messages that GoSMS doesn't have so it's clear they are never getting to my phone. I thought it was because of something I did when I froze the stock messaging app with Titanium Backup even though I had done this on every previous phone/ROM I've owned while using Handcent or GoSMS w/o any issues. I'm thinking now it's either hardware or system and this is getting quite frustrating.
