I tried to connect my 10.1 to my laptop using the cable that came with it. The laptop beeps and XP says new hardware has been found, however, it won't actually recognize the device.

I was hoping it would work like my Gs2 but it's been a fail so far.

Help!

Install the drivers for the phone. I would Install PdaNet as it will install the drivers after you select Samsung in a menu it will present.

I'll try that.

install kies

Exactly what I want to avoid. Kies is too slow, too kludgy and the interface blows.

Isn't there a drop down for choosing what type of USB connection you want to use on your galaxy tab? I'm not sure if you can enable mass storage mode if that's what you are trying to do.

Not sure what you're saying here.

I'm sure most Android 4.0 works the same but here's how i did it with my Visual Land Prestige 7. I got this from Visual Land's website FAQ's. I would link you, but I can't being this is my first post here. Easy to find though.

  1. Your tablet and computer should both be on.
  2. Connect your tablet to your computer using the included USB cable.
  3. Once you connect the tablet to your computer, you should see a notification in the status bar of your tablet. Open up the navigation bar by tapping on the notification.
  4. Select the option to copy files to and from the device.
  5. Tap on the button to "Turn on USB Storage".
  6. Your tablet should show up on your computer as an external drive. Simply drag and drop files to copy them to your tablet or vice versa.
  7. When finished, tap on the button to "Turn off USB Storage" on your tablet before disconnecting the USB cable.

I use XP to work with my Galaxy GT-3110 (using USB cable) and no problems since the first day.
Installing Kies you will have drivers on your PC, later you may uninstall Kies but drivers will still installed, you will find the tablet icon in "My Computer" and do all operations like copy, delete, create folders, etc..

I had to install Kies 2x and never could launch it - it just froze. But my laptop (XP) can now properly recognize the GT2. Thanks!

I feel glad to be helpful AnciusD, the main goal of this forum is to help and find help.
Kies needs very high system requirements... (Core duo, minimun speed 2 GHz, high amount of ram, etc...) that's maybe why Kies frozen your laptop or any other PC not enough powerful to run the application. But as it's now proven we only need it because the drivers.
