Help Slow network performance from Three on Nexus One :-(

Hi All,

Just got my N1 upgraded to unlimited web use through 3. Had to set up the APN. Did that in work and looked forward to `consuming` on the train journey home.

How cheesed off was I when I got diddly squat in the way of speed and function from the network?!

  • Endomondo - did not work, no maps
  • Google maps - never registered my position
  • Web - realllly slow to load anything
  • GPS tester - only found one or 2 satellites nd never made proper contact
Anyone else got an N1 with Three? Performace pants? Any other networks just as bad?

I'll try again on the commute tomorrow and see if it's a blip.

Cheers

Jimbo

a) 3 Unlimited is not unlimited, but 1Gb each month...
b) I get fair speeds (best was 3Gb+ a couple of times...),
see..
http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/45191-have-any-uk-owners-seen-hsdpa-sign.html#post381792
but not always... some places zilch, zoppo, nothing...
c) I chose 3 as, after comparing other "quality carriers [I bought PAYG SIMs]" I found for the location I'm in the most it had the best signal/speed.. others will find different results...
d) IMHO all mobile networks lie about what coverage you actually get.. (and I worked for VF for some time,..)
e) But, 5-10 years time and it'll be bleedin' wonderful..
f) Try a couple of other PAYG SIMs...??
g) I drove down from Highlands of Scotland to Berkshire a week or so ago... from the M74 to M6 to M6toll to M42 to M40 solid-solid-solid UMTS, occasionally HSPDA...
h) You'll all be aware the N1's antenna is at the bottom where most people hold a 'phone... if getting c**p signal or speed, try holding it higher up, away from the bottom. Before anyone whinges, i think the designer's choice was between frying client's brains (at the top) or patchy performance in iffy areas (at the bottom): As so often, there ain't a perfect answer...
Cheers!

PS I started in IT March 1973: 1st client I worked with with a network link was dial-up, 2400bps I think (could just do 4800bps but data overran occasionally & got corrupted...). You kids have no idea....

Love the old fart element of the post! And I thought I was long in the IT tooth!

I think it has a lot to do with the train carriage construction. As soo asn I got on my nike I get a trail from the staion back to home on Endomondo. More experiements are required!

What terrible spelling I made on that reply! I do not ride a Nike home...

Anyways... I discovered the speed test app and my Wi-Fi is getting around 7MB in the house. When I test 3G I was getting 1.42MB at best. What should I expect for a 3G signal? Off to look for threads on this...!
