Ditched AT&T and 3 Treos (2 x 680 and 1 x 600) because: (1) tired of AT&T, (2) tired of "GSM gallop" noise in speakers, and (3) wanted a fairly open system.
iPhone never an option due to (1) my desire to NOT do same as all around me and (2) closed system with significant design flaws.
I started with Palm OS in 1997 when I worked at Motorola in Austin, Texas. It was a huge step forward for the time - compared to proprietary PDAs and Apples Newton junk. The idea of a Palm OS phone was very attractive in 2003 but Palm OS just too creaky.
I also had a Blackberry from 2004 to 2007 provided by my employer. With a corporate Exchange service behind it and completly bidirectional wireless sync of mail, calendar, and contact, it set a standard that I've been trying to duplicate since. Note that Blackberry without that infrastructure is nowhere near as interesting.
Wireless sync of Google mail, contact, and calendar comes close. Sync of Outlook to Gmail calendar works OK with Google 0.9 application. Still looking for true bidirectional sync between Outlook and Google (mail, contacts, and calendar) so that sync to Droid also happens.
