Wallpaper zoom

Hi there,

i am really frustrated right now. Has Anybody here tried setting a custom wallpaper on the HTC Hero? If you have, you'll have noticed that a) the zoom is all ****ed up in the "set picture as wallpaper" mode, and b) that you are forced to only use a minimal, horizontally aligned, part of the image you want to use. It really drives me mad. Why am i not allowed to use my whole image as the wallpaper? I don't want to only use the top part of it, i want _all_ of it! Aerrrhghgh! So, uh, bottom line, does anyone here know how to evade this arbitrary restriction?

Never mind, everybody. Found an application on the market to solve my problem. It's called "Wallpaper Set & Save", and it actually works. So hooray for that. Cheerios.

It's true that when you choose a custom wallpaper it appears a rectangle on the chosen pic to let you crop it if you should feel that urge, but if you want all your masterpiece as Wallpap you just have to enlarge the rectangle to cover all of it.
That app of yours sounds quite redundant to me.

Good call. I didn't know that you could change the 'crop' area, simply by dragging the corners, so cheers for that tip!

Yes, this is exactly what i was talking about. The rectangle appears, however it takes a lot of tries before i can actually resize it. Most of the time it just ignores my two fingers on the display. When the "resize" border finally does appear, what happens is usually either a) it zooms IN on the actual picture instead of increasing the crop area (this has driven me mad as ****), or b) it increases the crop size, but only to a certain maximum, which doesn't necessarily cover all of the picture i want as my background (depending on picture size). Why not just take the whole freaking picture, and resize it if needed? This truly annoys me.

Yes, it can take a bit of exercise before you get it right and it can be that a tiny little area on the edges of your pic would not fit the rectangle. My opinion (which can be wrong) is that this happens if the file is too big (i.e. too many Mpxs) you can avoid this by resizing the file.
I never worried too much about it because the very edges of my wall paper aren't so important to me and because this happens only with a few of the pics.
I really wish this would be my only gripe with the Hero though; if you worry about this I guess you have no problems with USB sync'ing ,uh?
That is what drives me crazy about this phone.

Having some annoying problems on the myTouch 3G (aka Magic). The screen resolution is about 320 x 480, same as iPhone, right? So we would get access to thousands of iPhone resolution images all over the internet, right?

Here's the problem: try setting a 320x480 picture as your wallpaper. You don't really want to resize OR crop it, but when selecting it (Cupcake v1.5) you are FORCED to crop it to a horizontal 480x320 ratio (4:3 maybe?), instead of the obvious vertical ratio (3:4) that you want!!!!

But I figured out why this is-- because your desktop is actually three screens (left, right, and center). The background spans those screens. So, if you want to use a 320x480 resolution wallpaper, you have modify the picture to add padding to the left and right (or just find a 960 X 480 resolution wallpaper (roughly widescreen ratio), or use the App solution posted by the above member.

Sax is correct in saying that everyone should use the app "Wallpaper Set & Save". The only thing is that your wallpapers will have to be 960 x 480. With that app and that resolution, there are no distortions!!! Cheers for everyone!

Wow, I figured this out on the first day, a few pointers:


Don't use two fingers, use one. Place a finger on one of the sides, not the corner, when the white circles appear, you've placed your finger correctly and can drag out.

The rectangle is set to a certain ratio, if you max it out and it doesn't cover your whole picture, it's because your picture does not have the right dimensions. Rather than distorting the picture to fit it all in, they opt to preserve the aspect ratio and crop off the parts that don't fit. Hope that helps.

After some trial and error, Ive realized that the wallpaper image size should actually be 640 X 480. At that larger size mentioned (960 X 480), it still crops the image on the sides. The entire 7 "screens" is only scrolling across an image 2X the size of one screen. Does that make sense?

edit: Just realized i posted in the GSM Hero forum. Sorry. Hopefully there is no difference.
