New Hero question

I am purchasing an sprint hero this weekend, and i have a few questions:
1. I am planning to root with the flashrec method. is this the easiest and most effective?
2. I do not want to mess anything up, just install a 2.1 rom. will the flashrec method work for this?

i've heard problems about it but i've also heard that its easy...

using flash-rec didnt work for me when i got mine so i just rooted manually...

pre kitchen didnt work for me. manually did. As for messing up, its cut and paste commands. if you can do that, your golden I felt the same way you did...it was cake though.

I had the same fear of messing it up but the manual method is REALLY easy. As long as you type "what u see" there is no way you can go wrong...

I am not BIG on ROM's especially considering the fact that the 2.1 update is going to be coming out. I just removed some apps and am loving this thing even more.

dont even type! just copy and paste from the "code" boxes. Leaves you less room for error

agreed, copy/paste and follow the guide that is at the top of the forum. it works perfectly. pre-kitchen also works too. as long as you have all the drivers installed and configured correctly BEFORE trying to use it. if you don't you'll spend hours chasing the error and gettig it resolved when you can copy/paste the manual root method and be done in 15 minutes.

I tried the Pre-Kitchen method, but that didn't work well for me, so I did it manually. Even still, I had a few issues getting the recovery ROM to flash. I'm actually glad that it worked out that way, because I learned so much more and gained a much better understanding of the process, plus I got to know what a helpful community is out there that helped me with my roadblocks. If you enjoy learning about the tech you're customizing, then I'd recommend rooting manually the first time.

Just use the Fresh pre-kitchmen method. VERY SIMPLISTIC and you will be done in no time at all.

Don't bother the manual way.

Strictly IMO, based on my own experiences, I learned about Linux syntax, how to manually push files, how to flash and update a recovery image (the hard way), I learned about boot options, screens, and multiple ways to get to them, I learned how to wipe data, how to backup and restore, and I now have a much better understanding of what is taking place behind the scenes when I automate those processes via a kitchen. Flashing ROMs, and installing tweaks, mods and updates haven't always gone like clockwork for me; when I run into the occasional glitch or roadblock, I know how and where to go looking for problems, and I have a better comfort level in being familiar with what I see when I get there.

Just like I learned in the Marines, failure to follow SIMPLE instructions can get people hurt or killed.

If I gave you the impression that I think I'm smarter or better than you or that you're automatically wrong because I have a different opinion or experience, that was not my intent at all. Your post implied that the only thing to be learned by manually rooting was how to cut & paste; I offered examples of other things that I myself learned.

I agree with you 100% that it's up to each individual to decide for themselves based on the answers they get to their questions, and that what's best for one may not be right for another. I think it's fine that you and I have had different experiences with the same tasks, so others see that they have choices.

So, from what you say, if they fail both ways, they should continue to keep trying until they get it or, something else happens?

IMO your post is not helpful either. If you cannot follow simple instructions, then don't root. Again, IMO.

this may be a little off topic, but once I root my phone and flash a custom 2.1 image, how do I return to the official sprint 2.1 when it is released?

you wont need to go back to sprints update as there will be at least 3 sprint 2.1 based roms within a few hours of the release. the custom roms have been performing better than stock. root. flash. enjoy.
