Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Its the closest thing yet to a marketable electric car IMO. But if the original Tesla roadster is any indication, we are not there yet. I honestly think it is going to take one more leap in battery tech, whatever that may be, and then we will be there.

I don't remember anything bad about the Roadster other than the price. The Model S is actually semi-affordable at $50k for the base model. For right at $55k, you can get a couple of options on the base model like Napa leather, metallic paint, and a panoramic sun roof. That would get you those features, the standard infotainment system, and a 160 mile range. If I were in the market for a luxury car, that's what I would buy, hands down. Sadly I'm not in the market for a $50k luxury car. I'm not even in the market for a $35k Chevy Volt :(

I do think you're right though. One more leap in battery tech and the charging methods and we'll be there. Honestly that excites me. I don't think you'll ever see America go all EV, but it provides the option. I would envision families having at least 1 EV and one gasoline vehicle.

I would LOVE to have an EV for myself and my wife and then our Supercrew F150 for longer trips/family vacations and hauling. That would be the perfect vehicle lineup IMO. Never use gas unless you need to haul something or go on long trips.

They want everyone to go electric but sadly most people can't afford these cars. Not only that, an electric will do no good for someone that needs a pickup. Someday, hopefully, the past 10 years will lead to vehicles that anyone can buy. Rule of thumb is if you can't pay a car off in 3 years you can't afford it. I didn't follow that rule LOL! If it wasn't for school loan and credit card maybe I could pay off my vehicle in 3?

The Tesla roadster has a major issue in that the battery is rendered useless if the charge drops below a certain percentage, and vampire loads cause that to happen in as little as two weeks, even from a full charge. It even locks the wheels, so getting it on a tow truck is extremely difficult, AND it's not covered by warranty if it happens ($60000 replacement cost) , even though Tesla didn't warn their customers about it and are refusing to issue a warning, due to worry of drop in sales.

Didn't know that. Pretty major issue too. Seems like a pretty easy fix to me. Program it to shut off everything and isolate the battery once it gets below a certain percentage and have a warning light come on letting the user know to charge it.

Well the incidences where it has revealed itself is when the vehicle was parked without the capability to charge. i.e. I think one died at an airport parking lot, and another died in a ship's cargo bay while being shipped overseas. Tesla did tell their customers to always keep the charge up, but never warned about the consequences. They are claiming their warning was sufficient, even though its common sense that people will be a whole lot more careful if they know they are on the hook for a $60k battery if they don't follow the warning...

What Tesla has done to combat it, is have the car send out a warning message to Tesla if it drops below a certain percentage, and call the owner to remind them to plug it in. If they can't get a hold of the owner, they will activate the GPS, find the car, and if the car is located near a service center, they have actually dispatched a mobile charger to see if they can gain access to the car and charge it.

On my golf cart I just disconnect the batteries to get rid of any electrical leaks.

Essentially what Tesla could implement on their vehicles if it senses it is getting below a certain battery level. Alternatively have a button for the owner to press to go into long-term parking mode that, again, isolates the battery but does so immediately so the charge isn't lost at an airport parking lot or in ship transportation like Anti said.

Lol, does a girly tom boy count? It's a colossal, overwhelmingly big grocery store with more than 10,000 natural and organic groceries, 8000 specialty items and a market cafe that puts a lot of restaurants to shame.

Awesomeness! Overwhelming too!

Girly tomboy eh? Isn't that an oxymoron? lol Still counts as a girl, right?

It fits, by all appearances I am a girly girl, (long hair and nails, high heels, short skirts) but my interests are more along guys interests..I love to wrench on cars, take things apart, do plumbing, electrical and carpentry, go to the range etc. most people feel I am an oxymoron, lol.

Pup, you would think there would be an option for long term storage to do this. But sadly there isn't. Its all hard wired. Tesla wants to be able to monitor their cars, and you can't do it if it is unplugged.

I hope you guys realize I was being sarcastic. It is amazing that they don't provide for this though.

I do actually have a golf cart and it has a switch under the seat for exactly this purpose.

Sarcastic or not, it really is what should have been implemented. Whoever heard of a car that could cripple itself without some sort of protection against it. Really should have been implemented on the car.
