Root Still getting lots of lag, even with CTMod and Hyperkernel

Flashed CTMod 3.6.5 with Hyperkernel 1.5 a few weeks ago. At first the phone seemed much snappier, although boot up still took forever (even longer). Installed SetCPU to help with battery life, though didn't see much improvement there.

But over time the phone has gotten laggier and laggier -- even a bit worse than before. A lot of times the dialer lags as much as 30 seconds from pressing a number to call and for the actual call to start. This had never happened before. Uninstalled SetCPU, but no help there.

I also tried flashing another kernel -- the unleashed 3D one, but could not get that to install. The phone was just in booting mode forever. Had to do a battery pull and go into recovery mode.

Any ideas? Most people seem to be reporting much improvement, so I'm a bit disappointed. I was ready to ditch this crappy phone before, and now even more so.

SetCPU: I tried various frequencies, I think mostly 1200 high and 800 low. Didn't really mess with the governor.

Hyper 1 didn't help. Ridiculous lag when trying to make a call. Phone is becoming almost unusable. It worked really nicely when I first flashed the ROM and kernel so not sure what's going on.

I'm wondering if Widgetlocker is the problem. Will disable and see.

I gave up on widgetlocker when it lagged my phone out. It is not the only thing making it slow however. My phone will start lagging and slowing down about every two weeks and I will reflash Ctmod and Kernal and everything picks back up. I would try that and see if that helps.

Oy, that doesn't sound like fun. What's your strategy for recovering your apps and data?

@ Krasher. Did you ever find out what was going on with your phone. I doubt very seriously that it's the kernel.

Strange that you can't get the 3D kernel to work either. Ya might wanna start from scratch and install EVERYTHING over. I would start w/ the rooted update and go from there. Hopefully you can get it working because it's a nice kernel. The only issue I know of is the shutter bug and Bloodawn is working on getting that taken care of.

Like Biker said, I would start all over again and maybe it will iron out the main problem causing the lag. Titanium backup is the best way to recover apps.

No doubt. Titanium has saved me a lot of time in the past. I like that app so much that I bought the Pro key. Also, it depends on the app but sometimes restoring app plus data will corrupt the app install. When doing a restore w/ Titanium I just have a few apps that I use the app/data restore feature with. All others I just use the app only restore.

biker: not crazy about doing it all over, but will give it a shot. Don't want to buy a new phone. I don't think it's the kernel, either. Like I said, everything was working great after the flash, but then the performance began to degrade and now it's worse than before I flashed CTMod and and the kernel. Not sure what's going on.

I've restored form scratch so many times that it's just second nature to me now. lol I can be done with a complete install, everything, in less than 30 minutes.

As for your phone, not sure what's going on either because there are a lot people using this kernel and not having any issues except the shutter bug that's been mentioned. Strange indeed. Sometimes a complete install is your best bet to eliminate issues.

Thanks! When you say try the rooted update first, which ROM are your talking about?

I've restored form scratch so many times that it's just second nature to me now. lol I can be done with a complete install, everything, in less than 30 minutes.

As for your phone, not sure what's going on either because there are a lot people using this kernel and not having any issues except the shutter bug that's been mentioned. Strange indeed. Sometimes a complete install is your best bet to eliminate issues.

Edit: I would also make a backup of this rom after you flash it for future recovery needs such as PRL flashing, whoops I bricked my phone, stuff like that.

Krasher - I've had similar issues. Flashed CTMod 3.6.5 along with Hyperkernal 1.5 and worked great for a couple days but then will similarly freeze up and have 30+ seconds of lag. Had to remove battery once and reboot already to unfreeze.

Gonna flash hyperkernal 1.0 instead and see if that makes a difference.

Some phones cannot handle the 1300 setting. If you are getting lag at 1300, try backing the clock down some to 1000 with a min of 300. Also, I would leave the I/O and Gov setting alone for the time being until you make sure that it's going to run alright with the lower setting. Having the I/O set on deadline and the Gov set on ondemand is one of the most stable settings you can get.

Also, when turning the clock up, it is recommended to do so slowly. I turn mine up 1 setting at a time and run it there for 5-10 minutes before turning it up again. If I turn mine up to 1400 from 1200 it will freeze up on me and sometimes I will need to do a battery pull to reset it.

I use Voltage Control too. I've found that it is the most stable app for me. I have used AnTuTu but the settings do not stick sometimes. I've set my phone at 1100 w/ AnTuTu , left it for a bit and then picked the phone up and it was hot as hell and lagging very badly. I checked my cpu setting and it had turned itself all the way up to the MAX setting on min and max. This happened twice. That's a good way to burn one up. I do not use AnTuTu any longer and haven't had the problem since switching back to Voltage Control.

Biker: I assume if you don't use a frequency setter, the phone will run at the highest level available? So it's always advisable to have a SetCPU or VC on the phone?

I've reinstalled VC, btw, just to see if keeping the freq down at a decent level will help. Worth a shot before I start reflashing.

The kernel has a default setting when you install it. I think the default setting for the Hyper Kernel is 300 min 1300 max, I/O deadline and Gov. ondemand That way you have time to install a cpu app and adjust the clock to the desired setting.

Hey, so I reflashed the ROM and Hyperkernel and it does seem snappier again, but now I lost mobile data! Got wi-fi, but no data connection at all. Tried reflashing the kernel but no luck. So basically things have gotten worse now.

Any ideas?
