Help Notification sounds

Hi there,
I have looked through the forums but couldn't spot anything for this one so here goes...

Is there any way to use a custom sound as your notification tone? I cant for the life of me seem to work out how to do it unless im missing something really obvious! I downloaded the "you've got mail" wav and transfered it to my Magic but after that i'm stuck!

Any advice?

Create the following folders on the root of your memory card (note spelling and capitalization):

alarms
notifications
ringtones

Add the sounds you want to the appropriate folder
Remount the card
Sounds in the alarms folder will appear for selection in alarm clock
Sounds in the notifications folder will appear for selection in Messaging, GMail, etc.
Sounds in the ringtones folder will appear for selection as ringtones.

Note that you may need to force a rescan of the memory card to see the tones. This can usually be done either by unmounting and mounting the card or with a reboot.

If you follow his instructions to the letter, and it doesn't work, you may have to backup everything on your card, format it, and then create those folders.

Some people can just create the folders and it works, others have to format the card first and then create the folders, I don't know if a pattern or explanation has emerged, but at least there's another option if it doesn't work the first time.

Just download tone picker from the market. So much easier.

Perhaps, but does Tone Picker make those files invisible to the music player? You can have bells, and whistles, and beeps, and catchphrases in your "notification", "alarm", and "ringtone" folders and they won't accidentally end up in your music playlists because the default music player ignores those folders when it searches for music on the SD Card.

Also, the folder option means one less app crowding a phone that's already got limited space.

Simpler doesn't necessarily mean better. Sometimes taking the longer way around is more useful in the long run.
