Hi guys, thats my first post here :)

So i bought the S3 couple of days ago.

When I swiched it on it said that there is an software upgrade but then something messed up and the message disapeared and never came back.

I decided to upgrade it via Kies but now it says that "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies".

Any thoughts on this?

Im having the cell standby issue and I wanted to check if this upgrade will make something about this

Honestly I'm not too sure why a lot of people get that error with kies, it's just not a very good program. You could buy two identical phones from the same shop and one would work with kies and the other wouldn't.

You can manually do the ota update again though. If you go to setting, about device, software update, it will search for the update again and should install.

I have ordered this phone from Verizon but am getting worried about this Kies program. I have no idea what that is (never had a Samsung before) and don't really want to have to install it on my computer. Is it required for some reason for this phone, or just something extra that I can do without?

Kies is Samsung's official firmware update program. It has always baffled me why it is so poor as Samsung phones are so good. I seriously wouldn't let kies put you off though as this phone is awesome and there are better ways to update your firmware.

Edit: if you choose to update by other methods such as Odin the only reason you need to install kies is to install the drivers to connect your phone to the pc.

So Samsung doesn't do OTA updates? That seems stupid. Even on Verizon? Never heard of Odin either, guess I'll go look it up.

Just got the gPhone S3 a few weeks ago. Just learning it.
KIES is good for editing the phone contacts, to back them up to the 'puter, etc. I like the fact that I can edit the phone contacts, save them to the cell, and then back them up to the pc, ie save to pc.

My gPhone S3 does not have that. You lost me at ABOUT DEVICE.
Has Settings, About device, and not the rest. I do have System update before About Device under Settings

but also get the same error when running KIES, your device does not support software upgrading via KIES
At this time it is not that important to me
running on Sprint, usa

Well, you guys are actually doing alright. I cannot get Kies to talk to my S3 at all, I just get "This device is not supported by Kies 2". Support's response was just, well Kies supports S3, so that didn't go very far. I managed the upgrade OK, rather expensivley, via G3 but I would like to backup and edit my contents, stuff like that, it seems that at least one of you actually did this. How?

Have you tried turning off Windows Firewall, then connecting the phone?
