Root Removing Root?

Will I be able to factory reset my phone or what? I'm looking for step by step instruction on how to unroot my phone and get it back to it's stock rom. I am going to return my phone to bestbuy tomorrow and I'm not sure whether or not they'll take it rooted/with a custom ROM on there.

I'd start by trying the RUU (the .exe version run from the PC while phone hooked up via usb cable). You can find the instructions and file here:

I kind of assumed Sprint by the way. If not, there's intl variants there too. But if you're Sprint, it's the 3rd one from the top. You may have to try multiple times to get a download slot and best bet is this time of night. The downloads are slow, just warning you. I got a slot and have it downloading right now as a safety net. IF my connection holds up, I'll upload to Dropbox as a last ditch effort. Don't count on it though, do your best to get it, my ISP has sucked lately.

No, no luck! I need to return it sometime today too.

By the way what do you mean by you assumed sprint? If you're talking about the branding I have a vm branded.

Yeah that's right. It had both Sprint and VM references in the filename. I wasn't sure since I don't run this device. Anyway, I was able to get it downloaded thru the night (wow it was slow) and then uploaded to Dropbox. Hope I got to you in time:

Alright, so I'm currently downloading the RUU. Thing is, I can't seem to get my phone into Hboot mode. I plug my phone into the computer via USB, I power it off, then I hold the power on and volume button and the phone just starts up like normal.

You don't have to be in hboot. The .exe is run on a Windows PC while the phone is in charge only mode, usb debugging on and phone hooked to pc via usb cable.

So I don't have to use SDK or run it in hboot? All I have to do is run that program? In the tutorial you linked me too it tells me to start off by getting the phone into hboot mode. I skipped that step like you said, but when I type in the lock in fastboot command it tells me that it is waiting for my device to be connected to the computer. I have HTC Sync downloaded and it isn't recognizing my device either.

Yeah, you're just using the "Run the RUU" step of those instructs only. It does reference being in fastboot USB in hboot but that's just an alternate way of doing it and comes in handy if you're phone is soft bricked at the time. Since your phone is alive and well, you can go the old tried and true route of just running the RUU while the phone is normally booted in charge only mode.

Yeah recognition is always the PIA about this. Since you got HTC sync, it comes packaged with the drivers for usb recognition. Look on the pc at add/remove programs and see if there is a separate little driver package. If so, remove the main HTC sync program. You don't need it and it could potentially interfere with the RUU. Then, with the phone still hooked up to the PC (charge only and usb debugging enabled), reboot the pc. When the pc reboots, it should recognized the plugged in device and apply the drivers automatically.

If that doesn't work, we can try to force the driver update in device manager next.

They won't even check for root or a custom ROM. I've returned previous rooted/ROM'd phone to various Best Buy's and they never check for that.

Better to factory restore anyway so no one steals your personal data. Also they can refuse to refund your money if they find it is rooted and romed. Better safe than sorry.

I can actually return this device tomorrow so any more help would be fantastic.

Also, when I'm returning this phone, under the circumstance that I can't unroot it. Do you think if I flashed the odex rom and then just returned it like that they would take it? I mean the only way they could tell is if they saw super user, right?

I forgot that HTC dev is in play these days. I wonder if you need to relock before it'll work? Not sure, I haven't had much experience with the newer HTC's since that option was introduced. It may add some new wrinkles to the process.

You need to relock your bootloader before the RUU will work.
