Root HTC Magic (Vodafone NZ) will not start after rom update

Hi,

I'm new here and have a HTC Magic Vodafone-branded and in New Zealand. I've applied unlockr's dalroid rooted rom for 32B and the update went smoothly.
When rebooting however it freezes on logo and now the damn thing will not boot up (carrier logo, have let it sit there for several minutes, no luck). At this point the only thing i can do is hard power down the phone by pulling out the battery.

I did not format the sd card before doing this, nor did i do a factory reset. Was this supposed to happen? Or does it just take a very long time first boot?

I made a noob mistake of not backing up the existing rom. I did make a second mistake of not checking that factory roms aren't available for download for this phone here. So I'll have to flash to something else I can download. At least it's not totally bricked if I can get to recovery :)

I have not found any postings of NZ HTC Magic owners trying to root their phones yet, so I have a funny feeling our phones get bricked by this.

Anyone have any advice what I do from here? Has anyone had this problem? I would be graetful if someone could provide a stock vodafone 32B rom if they have one (google search unsucessful so far) or recomend a rom / provide a link (hero rom etc) that might boot up. I would guess the Australian Vodafone rom might work also.

thanks.
**update: phone now boots hero htc rom ok, still need to find a magic rom **

hey there,

I had the same issue with the hanging at boot thing, let me know if you find a rom that works. I have gone down the hero rom track too, but the laggyness pi**ed me off, so I restored my backup.. glad I did that :D

I can help you with the image if you still need one, let me know. Not sure exactly how to extract the rom off here, but last resort I could give you a nandroid backup.

Has some wicked features (the rooted hero rom) and it looks the part. as you see all over the forums, the hero rom is sluggish. some don't care, but it made me roll back to the original. I would recommend checking it out, it's easy to roll back, takes about 5 minutes with the nandroid backup / restore.

I haven't found a standard rooted rom that works with our dodgy NZ magics. they all boot to the vodafone screen and hang there - the ones i have tried anyway.

Hi thanks for replying.

I now have Cyanogen modded rom 4.0.1 working perfectly on the NZ. Aftermarket roms are bit hit and miss. but finally found one that works *woohoo*. Good performance, some hero features including like improved keyboard. So this is my daily driver at the mo. It's intended for the G1, but works on 32B nz boards. This should be useful for any nz users wanting a bit of a upgrade: [ROM] CyanogenMod - Zoom Zoom Zoom (STABLE) [UPDATED 8/22- v4.0.2] - xda-developers

I haven't tried 4.0.2 which may be a little faster, but 4.0.1 works well.

Well I haven't did find a stock vanilla NZ rom, so guys if you have a blank backup floating around that would be cool. :) Nandroid backup is the only practical way to get a dump of ROM easily - it's enough to put together a downloadable ROM since everything is there. Only problem of course is you want to do a factory reset first so there is none of your personal data passwords etc..

Not sure how well a nandroid backup would being restored to a different phone.this is not confirmed although some I've talked to say it would work, only garunteed if the phone was identical (SPL bootloader and Radio software version being identical).

This would be why some of the root ROMs are not booting on our NZ magics I'd guess.

If someone wants dump a nandroid of the current NZ magic chuck it up on a sharing site and post link it'd probably be useful for folks out there.Maybe some rom hackers could figure out compatiblity issues. :D
