Google navi question

I don't have navi yet (I am still waiting for the OTA) so I have this question:
When the navigation program is on how does the map show up? Is the car symbol always pointing to the same directon (toward the the front of the car) and the map turns under it as you making a turn? This seems to me the sensible way of displaying the motion.

When you run Navigation with 2.1, you get a different map...not the Maps that you see now. In the Navi map, things will rotate like a normal standalone GPS unit. The Maps program is still there and it still doesn't rotate, ie. North is always up no matter which direction you're traveling.

So far, I haven't found a way to keep the Navi map without setting a destination. It would be fun to just have it on while I drive around, but the way it is now, you have to enter a destination before you can use Navigation.

The car symbol points in the direction you are traveling. Not trying to be a smarty but if you were driving in reverse the arrow wouldn't point towards the front of the car. But it does show turn by turn directions in motion. Not sure if you know it has voice directions along with displaying the maps.

However, I wouldn't recommend driving in the city looking at the screen. It's cool on the open highway. But in the city you would be asking for an accident. I just usually listen and not look at the phone.

does anyone know if there is a way to set NAV for "North up" orientation? i assume its not possible, but you never know...

You are absolutely right keep looking at the screen while driving is asking for trouble. I think especially distracting could be the satellite and the street view where there are many more details to look at.

1. Select Navigator (widget)
2. Select View map
3. That little blue triangle is your location. I believe it will move in real time as you move. With GPS enable of course. Because that doesn't ask for a destination.

Is that what you are trying to do?

Open Navigator and select 'view map'. Once there select menu > my location.
That will put you on a scrolling map just like in Navigator. However it doesn't work quite like *I* would want it to. I have my phone set to never sleep when plugged in. When I'm on the regular navigation display the screen stays on full brightness. However on the 'view map' screen it dims (not sleep) after 1 minute. A tap on the screen brightens it back up, but I'd prefer it never dim. When wearing my sunglasses the dim screen looks black, so it's hard to just glance down and see what's happening.

If you scroll the map to 'look around' you'll need to reselect 'my location' to get it to follow you again

You can try either Keepscreen or Toggle Screen to keep the screen on when you're using Maps.

I know the map will scroll when you choose "My Location", but the map doesn't rotate accordingly. Like If I'm driving South, the Map would show me as an arrow driving down, since North is up.

I use a holder positioned above my dash so I'm looking at my Eris as if it were a Garmin or whatever...so I don't think it's any more dangerous than using a standalone GPS device.
